With the world gradually pulling itself from the grip of a global pandemic, many people have been dreaming of that once in a lifetime trip, exploring new parts of the world and finally shaking off a turbulent year. For most, travel in the current climate can be daunting, not knowing the regulations per country, vaccine status and the fear of illness, but there is one type of holiday that can bypass many of these concerns – charter. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/14113/image/large-aa58bee3b0b5f7afad741344e60153ac.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/14113">There are few other industries that can offer absolute privacy, or the world class standard of luxury, which can be offered aboard a crewed charter yacht. However, picking the right broker, yacht and destination can be a mammoth task, so we asked some of the leading brokers in the industry for their top tips for first time charterers.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/196103/image/large-c7b13c1b007cc75a49386273d08084fb.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/196103"> Look into booking your charter well ahead of time:&nbsp; Many brokers are predicting a boom in superyacht charters in the coming year, and with many people having suffered from holiday cancellations during 2020, demand will be at an all time high. Marie Molls, Partner, fleet manager and charter broker at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/159" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Burgess (Company)">Burgess Yachts</a> said; “Look into planning your charter early. The popular yachts book up fast, especially in the high season weeks, so it’s best to book, sometimes as early as 12 months in advance”.&nbsp;Peter Bennett, Founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/336" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bluewater Yachting (Company)">Bluewater Yachting</a> shared the sentiment, noting, “Worldwide, the charter industry is going to really kick off, people have been pent up for so long and now they want to get away. You won't be able to book a holiday, all the yachts that want to charter will be booked, maybe not this year but definitely next year. I recommend that if you want to charter in 2022, book early to avoid disappointment!” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/50650/image/large-0e1e16e84a12b6972bfd37297e6a3c1b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50650">Choose your charter broker carefully:&nbsp;Your charter broker is the person that you can rely on to find the perfect yacht for you, so finding the right broker is an all important step. Doing your research online is crucial, and it is also a good idea to find a broker that speaks your language and understands your perspective. Eleanor Bloodworth, Charter Specialist at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Y.CO (Company)">Y.CO</a>, noted, “Not only will your broker have access to a wider variety of yachts, but they are visiting the yachts and attending shows frequently, so they have a great knowledge of what the yachts are really like on board and who the captains are. This can give you much more insight to a yacht than a photo or video can ever do.”&nbsp;Many brokerages have a selection of international firms, so spend some time searching for the company that matches your interests and your requirements. It is important not to just look for a yacht and go from there, because that can really limit your options! Lucinda Rosen, Charter Broker at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cecil Wright & Partners (Company)">Cecil Wright and Partners</a> commented, “First time charterers can be overwhelmed with all the information and seemingly limitless choice of yachts from multiple brokerages.” Adding that the key to a successful charter is to have direct contact with the broker, over Zoom or in person, because “This allows a broker to be able to put together the absolute best options to suit them as well as guide first time charterers through the process, get them a good deal and be able to advise them on the best itinerary too.”Frances Edgeworth of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser</a> added, “Make sure you work with a qualified broker who has good credentials such as being a MYBA or IYBA member. A broker’s role goes far beyond securing a yacht: by working with a trusted broker, you will be fully supported by an experienced professional throughout the process.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/196101/image/large-4777a6a4f798d029145fa24a0f8acbf8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/196101">Be Flexible:If you’re chartering for the first time, it's a good idea to be open to a variety of options and locations, this will help your broker research the best options for you and your guests. Marie Molls of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/159" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Burgess (Company)">Burgess</a> added, “if you are ever uncertain, ask your brokers advice and recommendations, they are there to help find you the best vessel in the right location, and they have the experience.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/34507/image/large-2ca3ba6c5fb5c1398fb8efe03cc54948.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/34507">Don’t be afraid to ask for final costs:&nbsp;For first time charterers, defining the final costs can be confusing, but don't be afraid to ask your broker about the total costs of the charter. Almost all charters have an additional provisional allowance, be it for food, petrol, drinks or port tax, and these are often not calculated within the initial charter fee. It is important to speak to your broker about the Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA) and this will ensure you aren’t caught out by unforeseen costs.Alice Newnham, charter broker with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a> agreed adding, “When working with your consultant to find the perfect boat for your charter, it is really important that you are transparent about what you are looking to spend. There are other fees such as VAT/tax and crew gratuity that your charter consultant will also brief you on prior to you making your decision.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/196102/image/large-595219feb078a08afa5a5717e50a53ca.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/196102">Utilise your crew:&nbsp;Lastly, it's important to remember that the crew are really your best asset once you are aboard, they will know the vessel better than anyone, even your broker, and it is likely that they have cruised to many of the locations you are visiting before. The more information you give to them about your preferences, the easier it will be for them to cater to your desires and ensure that you have the best holiday experience possible. Nicola Breymaier of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser</a> commented, “Pay particular attention to the crew. Ensure your broker is aware of the kind of service you are expecting and that the crew will fit with that; be it formal, energetic, gourmet chef, sport specialists, etc. The crew is just as important, if not more important than the yacht itself!”Don’t shy away from asking their advice, or requesting the things you feel you need to truly enjoy your charter – that is what they are there for! William Molloy, the senior charter broker at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/808" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moravia Yachting (Company)">Moravia Yachting</a> agrees, adding, “A great charter crew will immediately realise if clients want to relax and enjoy the privacy offered by the yacht or be entertained during the cruise. They will have the local knowledge along the route to help you find ‘hidden gems’ along your bespoke itinerary. Whether it be the very best restaurants, an open-air opera, or the most beautiful anchorages for water-sports and idyllic lunches.” Alice Newnham of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a> reiterated also this point, “The captain, together with their crew explore the areas week in week out to seek out the best anchorages, restaurants, ports to give you a unique insight into the cruising grounds. They are knowledgeable - so use them! Compositeworks are one of the most comprehensive shipyards in Europe, specialising in refit, repair and maintenance. Founded by captain Ben Mennem and naval engineer Mark Salman, the company has gone from strength to strength since almost accidentally coming across their location in La Ciotat, France, some years ago, with just some of their most notable projects in recent years including the transformation of the 67.3 metre Feadship superyacht Falcon Lair, the complete refit of the 62.3 metre Feadship-built Faith (ex: Cakewalk, Fortunato), and the extension of five metres on board the 35.48 metre superyacht Zulu.

We sat down with Ben Mennem, the British co-founder and CEO of the yard, who explained the company’s current growth-mode, and what his thoughts are in regards to the recent acquisition of Blohm + Voss by Lürssen in light of the purchasing of new Blohm + Voss facilities in Compositeworks’ home town of La Ciotat, France.

You grew up in England and spent a great deal of time skippering on boats until 2002, but in 1990, you decided to venture more into the business side of boating. Tell us about the journey to Compositeworks.

I’ve been in the industry for almost 40 years. Passionate about sailing since the age of five or six, I worked as a captain on board several large sailing yachts before returning to land full time. In 1990 we started a company called Custom Tenders where we built around 80 tenders over a period of six years. I sold the company to focus on other projects, one of which was the build of the 92’ sailing yacht Stealth with Green Marine, which was quite a big deal at the time! We completed Stealth in the spring of ‘96, and as a result of that we suddenly had quite a lot of people asking us to build boats for them including Wally Yachts for whom we built a few yachts in Lymington in the UK.

In 1998 we were contracted to build a yacht for another client and were desperately searching for somewhere to build it. Someone suggested La Ciotat as they knew there was some space there. We went, asked to rent the space for six months to build a boat, and there we still are today, almost 20 years later. I like to think that we’ve contributed to the regeneration of the town over the past 18 years, something that we all feel quite proud of.

You recently announced that you will be taking over the Atlantic Refit Centre in La Rochelle. Tell us a little more about that development.

Dry docks are always potentially interesting to us because it’s almost impossible to build them anymore due to environmental and permit issues. There’s a limited number of them available, and with the growth of the market and the increasing size of superyachts, we believe these dry docks are going to become premium commodities.

The two dry docks at the Atlantic Refit Centre are of 130 and 190 metres, so that was fundamentally interesting to us. We’ve known the guys running the place for years and the team there are very dynamic with a great energy about them. Although we are still ironing out some of the details, the decision to takeover their facility was an easy one.

Do you think the location will make competition between more centrally located refit facilities tough?

Yachts go to the UK, to Holland, yachts go to Germany - why not the west coast of France? Choosing a destination for a refit is more about quality and craftsmanship than geography, although La Rochelle is also a stunning area for the crew. We are already working on getting planning permission to put a 190 metre cabin over the largest dock which will have an air draft of approximately 40 metres. We’re aiming to get the works completed for use as early as 2018.

Blohm + Voss had recently announced they will be opening a refit facility in La Ciotat, and Lürssen just announced they will be acquiring Blohm + Voss. How will this affect Compositeworks?

We are disappointed that we were not chosen for the short term concession of the facility in La Ciotat as we also bid on the project, but at the same time, I very strongly believe that if someone puts a wall up in front of you, you have to go around it, over it, underneath or through it. It’s a shame, but it’s not damaging.

The fundamental problem is that between Monaco Marine and Compositeworks, there’s already limited space for the clients that we do have. I never really clearly understood why they decided to bring in a third operator when there was already two well established yards… it seems like an illogical decision to me.

Turnover increased by 20% at the company this year, which you credit to Compositeworks’ experience in managing complex refits and and your dedication to responding to the client demands in the 85+ metre bracket. Is the demand for extensive large yachts refits still on the rise?

Absolutely. We are increasingly focusing on the 80+ metre segment, but I want to make it clear that this is not to the detriment of the smaller yachts in the market - we will still work on smaller vessels, but the real growth in the market at the moment is in the very large yacht segment. We started getting the big guys in around 2007, and our whole philosophy is that we’re not a one-hit-wonder. We’re here for the long term, and we’re preparing for where the market is heading.

Falcon Lair is one of your most talked about projects in recent years. What were the main challenges and rewards involved?

The challenges were time, budget, how to go about the design… Many of the modifications were in composite so we had to get those parts accepted from a classification point of view, which was not easy. The reward was seeing her completed; the styling is great and when you look at her from a profile point of view she looks like a new yacht. It was a fantastic project – and very rewarding to be able to have some creative input rather than just on the technical side. That’s another reason we like to take on these big projects, it challenges everybody and we like that.

Do you think we need more involved owners to challenge shipyards and designers to propel the industry forward?

Yes I think so. It is always good to have transformational projects or big jobs because it is a real driving force for our industry and it gives great satisfaction to the owners when you do it properly. Not every owner is capable of having a clear vision or, indeed, has the passion or the interest to do it. So yes, we applaud people who think big and have the creative vision to do something different and as a company we really enjoy our work because of its innovative, challenging elements.

Tell us about the projects keeping you busy.

I can’t go into too much detail because of confidentiality, but we’ve got three projects coming this winter that are going to come out the other side looking completely different to how they came in. It’ll be two motor yachts and a sailing yacht, one is basically an extension, another is a ground-up restoration, and the final one is a complete rebuild. But that’s just three projects, we’ve got a lot more on our plate with over 100 superyachts coming through our yard every year!

Compositeworks are also building tenders in Holland under the brand Tenderworks. Tell us about that.

Yes we built tenders from ‘90 to ‘96, and we had the opportunity to talk to an owner who wanted two tenders built for his Feadship. We asked Feadship if we could build them, and we received the contract to build two 10 metre tenders. We have decided to develop this more, and established the Tenderworks facilities near Amsterdam - just 15 minutes from Schiphol and 10 minutes from Feadship van Lent. We wanted to create a space that feels like a toy shop, somewhere that was just visually perfect - where people would come in and just would not want to leave. We’ve invested quite heavily in that, and we’ve received a lot of praise. We’ve just made a deal with Feadship whereby we will exclusively build their tenders, so we are very pleased with the progress over the last twelve months.

With several developments recently announced at Compositeworks, is it the aim to grow substantially in the foreseeable future?

Generally, we’re in expansion mode. We started with just four people 18 years ago, and today we’re closing in on 120. One has to advance cautiously in life, but we are actively seeking opportunities for development. As such, we are particularly pleased to be announcing a new commitment in Italy very shortly. The market is pretty strong with a constant increase in the number of large yachts over the next five to 10 years that will all eventually need servicing!

Compositeworks has recently completed the refit and lengthening of the transom and swim platform of superyacht Zulu, by 5 meters. In 2013 the interior of the vessel was already successfully refitted at the Compositeworks yard.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/154683/image/large-0f5e5d0edb1b1893e1c8fea0ba7f9d37.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/154683">The lengthening, which was engineered by Azure Naval Architects, has created a transom beach club and additional interior accomodation. Zulu's extension will also offer better stability underway and at anchor. The Compositeworks naval architecture department executed a performance analysis prior to the hull extension. Both her exterior and interior lines were designed by Michael Kirchstein and in 2013 Pastrovich designed a new interior for the vessel. Fraser Yachts'Julian Calder has sold superyacht Beyond in a deal where Edmiston'sJonathan Barbe represented the buyer. Beyond is a 30.48 metre superyacht built by Inace in 2009. The yacht's interior features lots of white woodwork with large windows providing full outside views. The yacht offers 4 large exterior guest areas, with a protected dining area for 10 on the aft deck, a spacious bridge with an inviting and casual sitting area, an elongated buffet table, BBQ, ice machine and bar fridge, as well as a new removable Bimini. Accessed from an external staircase leading up from the boat deck, the entire deck is given over to large sun beds and a 6 person Jacuzzi. Just in front of the bridge there is a lounge chair that overlooks the tender on the bow, a perfect spot while underway. Superyacht Beyond sold

The Antibes Yacht Show, the most important yacht show at the beginning of the season, taking place from April 12 to 15, in the beautiful harbour of Port Vauban in Antibes, has announced that Fraser Yachts will be bringing four large yachts to this year's show. Voyager Voyager is a long range displacement expedition type yacht with attractive and spacious accommodation for six guests in three double cabins. She has the ability to cruise in remote areas for long periods. She has benefitted from a major refit during 2007 with many enhancements and a full exterior repaint. Her wide beam makes for impressive interior volume and she has a flexible layout.
Alia 82 Built in Turkey in 2010 by Alia Yachts, The construction of the Alia 82 was project managed by a very experienced Australian project manager and a British Captain with extensive Maxi Yacht racing experience.

Fraser Yachts announces yachts at Antibes Yacht Show

Fraser Yachts have recently sold the 75.13 metre Phocea. Phocea was built as a cruise ship by the French shipyard DCAN in 1976. In 1999/2000 she underwent a major interior and exterior refit at Lürssen in Germany.
