Al Jadaf

Upon being acquired by an enthusiastic owner following a severe fire in 2016, the classic 71.05-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> motor yacht, formerly, The One and Carinthia VI, has now been renamed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/674" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="V2V71.05m (233'1&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1973">V2V</a> and has been rebuilt to exhibit her original <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Bannenberg</a> lines, paying homage to her history and classical design. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262005/image/large-b479c33a41dbe5498bfc12ac23aab48d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262005"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/674" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="V2V71.05m (233'1&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1973">V2V</a> was first launched in 1973 as Carinthia VI&nbsp;for the experienced owner duo and late &nbsp;German entrepreneur Helmut Horten and, in later years, his wife, Heidi. Carinthia VI&nbsp; (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/674" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="V2V71.05m (233'1&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1973">V2V</a>) was praised for her outstanding design by Jon Bannenberg. The details of the first two of the Carinthias fleet are obscure, though widely assumed to have consisted of smaller vessels for use on the &nbsp;Ruhr and Rhine rivers.&nbsp;Carinthia III, on the other hand, was Horten’s first real superyacht. Measuring 24.60 metres she was built by the French shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/548" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Chantier de L'Estérel (Company)">Chantiers Navals de l’Esterel&nbsp;</a>in 1961. She was designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/549" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="André Mauric (Company)">André Mauric</a>, and was later sold and renamed twice; Brionie and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7635" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Venezuela 24.6m (80'9&quot;)Chantier de L'Estérel1961">Venezuela</a>. One thing all the Carinthia’s have in common is that they are all notably fast yachts and though Carinthia III&nbsp;was one of the slowest in the fleet, she still boasted a top speed of 23 knots. She was last reported to be in Greece in 2006.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/158208/image/large-77b059274290fe2e7df6bc0ea1be05cb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/158208">Carinthia IV&nbsp;(pictured above) saw Horten upgrade in size by almost 18 metres to 42 metres, to a yacht that was also the fastest Carinthia with a top speed of 34 knots. Built by the same French shipyard as Carinthia III, she was completed in 1964, with Horten again assigning her design to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/549" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="André Mauric (Company)">Mauric</a>, this time in collaboration with the now-iconic <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Jon Bannenberg</a>. Again, &nbsp;number four in the series of yachts was sold and renamed, this time to Sylvana C. Seeing another extension in length from her predecessor, this vessel was built at the German shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>, a brand a little closer to home for Horten. Measuring 67.85 metres, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Bannenberg</a> was responsible for her design this time in collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>, marking a departure from the French shipyard Horten had previously favoured for his Carinthias. Source: Jon Bannenberg: A Life Of DesignHorten didn’t grieve over the loss for too long, however, and promptly ordered a &nbsp;replacement that was delivered just two years later in 1973. Again built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen&nbsp;</a>to an almost identical design of Carinthia V, Carinthia VI&nbsp;measured 70.68 metres, and was one of the largest yachts in the world at the time. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/20602/image/large-2c2fb29561e15adb5225ba41d35f90b9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20602">She was later sold and renamed The One and she cruised under that name for another 13 years. Regrettably, on 4 January 2016, she was destroyed in a fire that broke out in the marina where she was moored in Marmaris in Turkey. Images conveyed the extensive damage, including a missing superstructure and severe warping to the hull on the starboard side. The iconic 71m Lürssen superyacht Carinthia VI (now V2V) has been rebuilt following a devastating fire in 2016.

The start of the year saw shocking damage to two well-known superyachts: the 52 metre Barbie built by Al Jadaf in 2006, and the 71.05 metre Lürssen-built The One, following a fire which broke out in a marina in Marmaris. Though information pertaining to the extent of the damage is scarce, it was clear from videos circulating in the media at the time that it was significant.

Following SYT’s recent visit to Turkey, we spotted the hull of The One still in Marmaris. Now six months after the incident, it is still uncertain of what exactly will happen to her in the foreseeable future. Completed in 1972 and often considered one of the late Jon Bannenberg’s most impressive designs, the industry will have to wait and see if the fate of The One can still be salvaged.

The One still lying in Marmaris following substantial fire

The owners of the recently destroyed superyacht Barbie have been paid a total of $20,000,000 from a group of 14 Lloyd’s insurers, Hiscox MGA has recently announced. She was destroyed at the beginning of 2016 in January, whilst moored in a marina in the Turkish town of Marmaris.

	“Barbie is the largest claim that the superyacht insurance market has had to deal with in quite some time. That it was paid in full within 60 days of the event will hopefully help the owner to reach closure from this traumatic incident,” says Paul Miller, Hiscox MGA’s Director of Underwriting. “It is pleasing that we could resolve this claim so speedily, as we, and our insurance partners, pride ourselves on our technical expertise and customer service.” 
	 
	Built by the UAE shipyard Al Jadaf in 2006, Barbie was insured through Yachtsure24, which represents both Lloyd’s and A-rated European carriers. Talbot syndicate led Barbie’s insurance policy, along with 13 other insurers. 
	 
	The iconic 71.05 metre Bannenberg designed vessel The One was also destroyed in the same fire in Turkey, sparking the beginning of a string of unfortunate superyacht casualties so far in 2016. This includes the Princess 95 Queen Anna also in Turkey in January, the Benetti superyacht Camarina Royale in Cuba, three 30+ metre vessels at the beginning of March in Abu Dhabi, and the Monte Fino motor yacht Positive Energy which was destroyed by a fire is St. Thomas just last week.

Although specific details are yet to be confirmed, it appears that a major fire that has broken out in a marina of the Turkish town of Marmaris has caused what it expected to be extremely severe damage to at least two well known superyachts. Local media reports that the fire took over four hours to extinguish, and an investigation has begun to establish the cause of the incident.UPDATE: Eliad Hagiladi of Yacht Marine has just uploaded the following video to Youtube. According to Eliad the fire started onboard The One at 2am and then spread to Barbie. Other yachts had left the marina in order to escape the fire. Fire in Marmaris damages superyachts The One and Barbie

She is a superyacht, based on a traditional Dhow hull. We believe she was converted at the Al Jadaf Drydock in Dubai around 2005 and we estimate she has a length in the region of 35 metres. She has her home berth at The Pearl, and seems to be well kept. Not much else is known about this yacht, please get in touch with us if you have specifications on the yacht.
