The show is one of the leading exhibitions dedicated to the boating industry in the area and will feature over 220 exhibitors and 300 vessels. Despite an impressive resumé, designer Alessandro Massari has not always received the media attention he deserves. But his dazzling interior design aboard 88-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Project X87.6m (287'5&quot;)Golden Yachts Ltd.2022">Project X</a> that debuted at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2022">2022 Monaco Yacht Show</a> is set to change all that. We travelled to Fano on Italy’s Adriatic coast to discover more about <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1156" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Massari Design S.r.l. So it’s not altogether surprising that the first thing he does is take me on a tour of Fano’s Roman wall and the historic Arch of Augustus, the triumphant gateway that marked the entrance to the ancient city. From there it’s a short walk to the elegant 17th century palazzo that houses the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1156" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Massari Design S.r.l. (Company)">Massari Design</a>, where we settle down to talk under frescoed ceilings. &nbsp;“I basically took over the business set up by my father, who designed his first yacht interior for Canados in 1964 and then worked as a consultant for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CRN (Company)">CRN</a> before it became part of the Ferretti Group,” he begins. “He was the interior project manager on Gianni Agnell’s <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="F-10032.9m (107'11&quot;)CRN1983">F-100</a>, the celebrated yacht with exterior design by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/172" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gerhard Gilgenast (Company)">Gerhard Gilgenast</a>, and worked on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1062" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azzurra II47.8m (156'10&quot;)CRN1988">Azzurra II</a>, another classic <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CRN (Company)">CRN</a> yacht, together with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/288" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Paola D. Smith & Associates (Company)">Paola D. Smith</a>. I guess you could say yacht design was in my blood from the start.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/267336/image/large-e3fbc852f73e2bd6d600573cdaa95d55.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/267336">The latter connection proved instrumental in the trajectory of Alessandro’s own career. Starting out as a young interior designer he realised he would need to perfect his English by seeking work experience in the US. His father put him in touch with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/288" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Paola D. Smith & Associates (Company)">Paola D. Smith &amp; Associates</a> and he ended up spending two years with the Florida-based studio. During that time he contributed to projects such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/149" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Christensen Shipyards, LLC. (Company)">Christensen</a>’s 49-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/174" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Carte Blanche48.77m (160'0&quot;)Christensen Shipyards, LLC.2008">Primadonna</a> and 39-metre Lady Halima (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Azul39.4m (129'3&quot;)Heesen Yachts2001">Lady Azul</a>) launched by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a> in 2001.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/67434/image/large-b13cb93378761bccf1f7afe2f0415f10.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/67434">“Both interiors were very bespoke projects and from Paola I learnt how to tailor the design to the client’s wishes,” he recalls. “That lesson stayed with me and today as a studio we start the creative process by listening with almost maniacal attention to the client. After listening, we study and then propose, &nbsp;always in that order.”Alessandro returned to Italy, but his apprenticeship as a designer was not over: he had the technical knowledge, but not the hand-on experience his father considered an essential ingredient of the job.“So I went to work for a carpentry company designing onboard furniture for shipyards like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>,” he says. “That meant engaging with the tradesmen on the shop floor, where I learned how things were put together and installed.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/16441/image/large-6efab0734257b84b932a5096d6656858.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/16441">That workshop was eventually taken over by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>, which opened another chapter in the designer’s career. Originally called in to help resolve issues with a client and his American interior designer, he ended up overseeing the interior shop drawings and outfitting of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>’s Classic and Vision series in composite.&nbsp;This led to taking on the interior design of larger steel and aluminium yachts from 59-metre Wind (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/516" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galkynys59.0m (193'7&quot;)Benetti SpA2007">Galkynys</a>) to 62-metre Bistango (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/512" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sorrento62.0m (203'5&quot;)Benetti SpA2010">Sorrento</a>). By 2010 he had contributed to the interior design of some 25 superyachts from half a dozen leading shipyards.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/200434/image/large-9dc6bfedd312d6a0275e9e0bd8350bfb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/200434">An important custom project was <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4386" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Forever One54.65m (179'4&quot;)ISA Yachts2014">Forever One</a>, the 54-metre motor yacht with exterior design by Horacio Bozzo that was launched by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ISA Yachts (Company)">ISA</a> in 2014 for owner Bruce Grossman. An artful demonstration of how an attention-grabbing exterior and a soberly classic interior can be gracefully combined, the owner spent months at a time aboard his yacht.“The owner wanted a very distinctive exterior, but our brief was for a casual and family-oriented interior,” says Massari. ““One of the most challenging aspects was his considerable wardrobe that included a valuable watch collection. He had very precise instructions regarding the dimensions of drawers and hanging space, so much so that he invited me to visit his homes to take measurements, which were reproduced exactly aboard the yacht.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/267337/image/large-4c33ddfa796e8bea414adffbb150fdd7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/267337">By this time <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1156" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Massari Design S.r.l. (Company)">Massari Design</a> was juggling a growing number of residential commissions with large yacht projects such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a>’s 76-metre Halo and 101-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4152" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="I Dynasty100.8m (330'9&quot;)Peters Werft GmbH2015">I Dynasty</a> built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/195" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kusch Yachts (Company)">Kusch</a> in Germany, his biggest yacht interior to date.&nbsp;“I‘ve learned to be very precise in the design package we provide, because the more specific you are the less room for interpretation there is,” he says. “Of course, there should always be room for dialogue, but by removing the grey areas the whole design process becomes more fluid. I think the northern Europeans are much more advanced than us Italians in this sense.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/184240/image/large-4dee20403a33c1a3b74d7266df4ad637.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/184240">While working in Germany a chance meeting with Sheldon Adelson, founder of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation that owns a chain of hotels and casinos, led to another fork in the road for Massari. The American entrepreneur hired him to develop the interior concept for The Venetian, a massive resort and casino complex in Macau. Other Sands resorts followed as well as the refitting of 92-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/272" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Queen Miri91.5m (300'2&quot;)Neorion2004">Queen Miri</a> for Adelson at Amico&amp;Co in Genoa. Moreover, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1156" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Massari Design S.r.l. (Company)">Golden Yachts</a> in Athens, where her interior design was completely revamped by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1156" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Massari Design S.r.l. (Company)">Massari Design</a> (the studio is also developing the interior design for 77-metre O’Rea by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/778" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Golden Yachts Ltd. (Company)">Golden Yachts</a> due to launch this year).&nbsp;At almost 3,000 gross tons, it is difficult to describe the sheer variety and complexity of the interior design. The array of exclusive materials includes more than 40 types of leather, precious woods, marbles and onyx, and sophisticated finishes. Yet despite the rich aesthetic the effect is never ostentatious and each room is endowed with its own identity and personality.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/252015/image/large-40798fc4db1e218fedd6b624eb86e3ec.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/252015">“We set out to create a contemporary, refined and welcoming interior solutions that conferred uniqueness to each individual space, while ensuring perfect harmony with the others,” says Massari.A prime example of how Massari and his 10-strong team (which includes his wife Maurizia) think through every detail of the design process is the bar unit on upper deck. The façade is lined with dozens of undulating glass bottles filled with a special whisky-coloured fluid, but the studio also designed the spring-loaded, rubber-lined mounts so the bottles don’t rattle under way and can be easily removed for cleaning. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/237426/image/large-7115013fadbee633e9a23854046e5dd7.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/237426">At the same time as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Project X87.6m (287'5&quot;)Golden Yachts Ltd.2022">Project X</a>, the studio was working on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CRN (Company)">CRN</a>’s 52-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10294" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="PrivateGG52.0m (170'7&quot;)CRN2022">Ciao</a> with exterior design by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/55" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Omega Architects (Company)">Omega Architects</a>. The interior aesthetic based on natural, earthy tones punctuated by flashes of vibrant red soft furnishings is totally different but equally elegant, consistent and refined.&nbsp;As well as a Darwin 86 and 130-foot Acciaio explorer at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantiere delle Marche (CdM) (Company)">Cantiere delle Marche</a>, one of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1156" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Massari Design S.r.l. (Company)">Massari Design</a>’s most recent projects is <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2504" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wider s.r.l. (Company)">Wider’</a>s new production on Fano’s seafront that is now close to completion. (Company)">Wider</a> has announced that building plans for its new shipyard in Fano, Italy, are on track to start up production in early 2023. The heavy foundation work for the 18,000 square-metre seafront site between Fano’s fishing port and the tourist marina is now almost complete.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251456/image/large-1f27599368ce852a2ec81b3a326e0708.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251456">“The new shipyard will be a real innovation centre,” said Marcello Maggi, who heads up W-Fin Sarl, the holding Company that owns 100 percent of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2504" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wider s.r.l. (Company)">Wider</a> equity. “It’s where all our future boats, new green technologies and new ideas coming from start-uppers will come to life in full compliance with environmental issues.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251454/image/large-b1925996081264b3c23884a7057e1a8a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251454">The new high-tech facility plans to embody <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2504" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wider s.r.l. He chose the crisp contemporary design of local architects Alessandro Massari and Mauro Cavicchi of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1156" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Massari Design S.r.l. (Company)">Massari Design Architecture Studio</a> to conceive and develop its design. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251460/image/large-2896cd55f149101613f5972c0139ad8e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251460">“The brief was for a structure based on sustainable principles and striking design that also provided the kind of the functional efficiencies associated with modern boat building processes. “It’s not easy to design something that is beautiful but also practical from an industrial perspective,” commented Alessandro Massari.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251461/image/large-4d66d41346cabf4fa7587f2f5b22c8eb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251461">The building will stand 14-metres high with its profile broken up by large glass surfaces that will flood her interior with plenty of natural light. The facility will be equipped with a travel lift and also includes 350 linear metres of quayside. “This new shipyard will be a pole of excellence not only for the city of Fano, but also for the Italian boatbuilding industry,” concluded Marcello Maggi.

(Company)">Wider</a> – but it is also clear that the demand for its innovative, technologically advanced vessels, such as the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2504" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wider s.r.l. While multihulls have hardly taken lift off over the last decade, with catamarans and trimarans remain around 2% of the global fleet (according to <a href="https://superyachttimes.ac-page.com/homepage" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SYT iQ</a>), in recent years we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of catamaran concepts, designs and launches. Many of the companies that have backed the multihull often cite efficiency, “eco-friendliness” and “sustainability” as key motivators for the adoption of the hull form. But what is the science behind these claims; and has there been enough of a significant &nbsp;change in the mentality of the yacht owner, to justify the number of designs which are flooding the market? We spoke to some of those companies to get an inside look at the multihull movement and how it might shape the future of the global fleet.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/243152/image/large-9a5dff94462f873938f4847f3b172f72.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/243152">Monohull or multihull?In an article published in 2010, naval architects James Roy and Alex Meredith Hardy of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral Naval Architects</a> weighed up the pros and cons facing the multihull conversation. Having created innumerable designs for fast ferries, and commercial catamarans over the years, both engineers were surprised that the yachting industry had been slow to uptake the hull form. With efficiency and high speeds (+40 knots) on offer, as well as the beamy main deck platform, some might consider catamarans an ideal substitute for a monohull. But aesthetics are everything in the yachting industry, and the boxy form of catamarans has failed to catch the eye of those owners who frequent the Mediterranean.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/243181/image/large-c6914543e6f18b57554436d3995e9c7b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/243181">The catamaran hull form does have hydrodynamic benefits. As Roy and Meredith Hardy wrote “by dividing the total displacement between two hulls, the displacement-to-length ratio is improved, and in turn the wave-making component of the total drag is substantially reduced.” In layman’s terms, catamarans can be more efficient than monohulls of the same GT due to reduced drag, but as Roy explained to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4509" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuperYacht Times (Company)">SYT</a>, points of comparison must be carefully defined, with GT, rather than length being the optimum comparison base.Despite the arguments around the improved efficiency of the hull form, many builders who dominate in the sector indicate more than this as driving the sustainability of the hull form. Many of the major players in the 24-30 metre catamaran sector – consider for example Sunreef, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5188" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Silent Yachts (Company)">SILENT-YACHTS</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2504" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wider s.r.l. (Company)">Wider</a> – build hybrid-electric yachts that also utilise solar power. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/218828/image/large-dcd5a1dbf422df667598b2cbecf72599.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/218828">Franz Boese, Chief Marketing Officer of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5188" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Silent Yachts (Company)">SILENT-YACHTS</a> commented, “Technically speaking, it makes much more sense to create a solar powered multihull than a monohull. The main reason is space. With the wider beam of a catamaran, there is more space to install solar panels. This increases the potential energy production of the yacht, which is crucial to create a well-rounded experience on board, without any compromises or limitations.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/218831/image/large-7ef1fbb54c2ffb89d751ffa81dba1ce1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/218831">Marcello Maggi, who heads up W-Fin Sarl, the holding Company that owns 100% of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2504" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wider s.r.l. (Company)">Wider</a> equity, shared this sentiment, “From an engineering point of view, the greater width compared to a monohull allows the exploitation of a greater surface area intended for the use of solar panels, an additional source of energy for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2504" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wider s.r.l. (Company)">Wider</a> serial hybrid propulsion system.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/243905/image/large-fa2344bdde9cba8bb8b55ce4d2e91124.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/243905">The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> Eco yacht series feature both sail and power cats, taking the solar concept a step further with its innovative ‘solar skin’ – an in-house technology that takes the solar concept to the next level by coating the hull with integrated solar panels. Aside from the solar benefit, the vessels incorporate wind generators, custom-engineered lithium batteries, non-toxic paints and green composite structures, demonstrating that it takes more than a hull form alone to create an ‘eco’ yacht. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217058/image/large-d28cbdee1e2d1407c74edcb10d9b1c85.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217058">Francis Lapp, Founder and President of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> commented, “Twenty years ago nobody believed in our approach. Today, the trend for big multihulls is a fact – everyone wants to build them. Customer expectations have changed. Superyacht owners look for a better length-to-volume ratio, more stability, fuel efficiency and green solutions. They seek wide open spaces to enjoy with friends and family. They want to be close to the sea.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251286/image/large-3e33021915747466f5a12828db013070.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251286">Of course unlike many of its competitors, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> also offers a sailing catamaran as part of its <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> Eco range, Lapp summarised the pros and cons; “sail yachts have the obvious advantage of wind propulsion. On top of that, we use hydro generation – this means our sail yachts recover energy from the propellers’ rotation while under sail. Power yachts on the other hand, offer more space for solar panels – for example on the bow terrace. They can also be fitted with a kite.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/245765/image/large-c37cd86ae4bdebe0c439296808589483.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/245765">Gaining momentumAt the 2021 <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2021">Monaco Yacht Show</a>, local designer Espen Øino of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino International</a> took to the stage of the Design and Innovation Hub to discuss the topic of sustainable yacht design. He cited the potential of the catamaran and SWATH (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) hull forms for their efficiency. Øino had only recently unveiled a catamaran design in collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/899" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SilverYachts (Company)">SilverYachts</a>, the SpaceCat, the first of which was sold in May this year. Referring to catamarans as the “SUV of the seas'', Øino recognised that the hindrance to catamaran popularity has, so far, been their characteristically boxy aesthetic, but he also firmly predicted that we will be seeing far more multi-hull vessels in the coming years a sentiment which has been echoed by many in the industry.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/172375/image/large-c77b325f21127c39ffc63a73dfa2af05.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/172375">Not only have we seen a larger number of catamaran concepts entering the scene over the past few years, but there have also been a number of shipyards focusing their attention on this area of the industry for the first time. In December last year, Italian shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1080" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rossinavi (Company)">Rossinavi</a> unveiled its first catamaran concept, the dramatic and eye-catching 43-metre hybrid Sea Cat 40, the first hull of which was sold in June. This initial foray into the sector was then followed in May with the release of the 44-metre Oneiric with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6728" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zaha Hadid Architects (Company)">Zaha Hadid Architects</a>, demonstrating a real investment into the hull form. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/229232/image/large-e0f6cd066759376d6c862f8cd87bb77f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/229232"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1080" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rossinavi (Company)">Rossinavi</a> has been developing this series of catamarans for over a year and will unveil at least two more designs in coming months using a fully developed platform. Federico Rossi, COO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1080" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rossinavi (Company)">Rossinavi</a> explained, “We are invested in creating vessels with a reduced carbon footprint. and we have a diesel-electric yacht currently under construction. But we want to be innovative now, without having to wait for alternative fuels such as hybrid propulsion. We believe the best way that we can improve the efficiency and therefore sustainability of our vessels is by employing the catamaran hull form and that is why we have entered this sector.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/229225/image/large-7a148124a3516af9004eafc5b52a9141.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/229225">Multiple hulls = multiple benefitsHistorically plagued by criticism for their looks, it would appear that many owners are coming around to the style and aesthetics of catamarans – or,at least, that they are willing to overlook them in light of the varied benefits the hull form offers. Recent additions to the global fleet include the 65m support vessel <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7280" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hodor66.2m (217'2&quot;)Astilleros Armon2019">Hodor</a> and the 68m <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8908" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wayfinder68.2m (223'9&quot;)Astilleros Armon2021">Wayfinder</a> from Spanish shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/799" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Astilleros Armon (Company)">Astilleros Armon</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/83673/image/large-c39a02cf7e80bf63ad8e7b2022beac0f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/83673">Unlike the smaller cats from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5188" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Silent Yachts (Company)">SILENT-YACHTS</a>, the two vessels have been specifically chosen for the width and stability they offer, making them able to carry a huge selection of tenders and toys. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7280" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hodor66.2m (217'2&quot;)Astilleros Armon2019">Hodor</a> has a 14-metre beam, a helipad, a fleet of tenders, the largest of which is 17-metres, an ROV launched from a purpose built crane, a dive centre with decompression chamber, a selection of four-wheel drive vehicles and a full suite of toys. All of this alongside cabins for 20 crew and a number of guests in luxury accommodations.&nbsp;As previously mentioned, the benefits of multiple hulls have many, and the companies discussed here have a firm belief in the growing popularity of the hull form. As Marcello Maggi of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2504" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wider s.r.l. (Company)">Wider</a> concluded, “We believe that our catamaran is a catalyst for several elements that make her suitable for a customer choice. The abundance of the surfaces that can accommodate the cutting-edge mini solar panels that avoid turning on the endothermic devices, increasing the comfort aboard with limited noise and vibration, and these are some of the strength points of this innovative product.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217057/image/large-cdb33dec87739692a755aa801b46f5e5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217057">All of the companies we spoke with shared the same sentiment; that clients are opening up to the concept of a catamaran, many in part for the various “green” benefits they offer, be it additional solar panel positioning, hydrodynamic benefits and hybrid potential. As Federico Rossi commented, “We hear clients saying right now, ‘We are ready to move into the multihull sector’ and I think part of this drive is to do with a new generation of owners who are focused for the first time on leaving the world in a better position than they found it. The ground has now been broken at the new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2504" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wider s.r.l. (Company)">Wider</a> shipyard facility in Fano, Italy. Originally announced earlier this year, the yard is set to be constructed across an 11,000 square-metre space. The shipyard is sea facing and is located between the historic fishing port and the touristic marina. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/243653/image/large-27bd7695b0195f718845596962aafb0d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/243653">The shipyard's quay spans almost 100 metres in length and the focus of the yard will be the construction of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2504" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wider s.r.l. (Company)">Wider</a>'s production catamaran yachts. An exclusive ceremony was held &nbsp;in Porto Marghera, Venice, to mark the occasion. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/239481/image/large-c329690e3f66513899a2e8dcf89d7370.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/239481">The 72-metre superyacht features an exterior design and naval architecture by Nauta Yachts, and she's &nbsp;expected to offer 1,450 GT of interior volume.
