For many years, satellite (VSAT) has been the main source of superyacht internet. However, within the last two years, as onshore 4G infrastructure has rapidly improved, LTE broadband has come into the market, offering speeds which by far exceed what even a very expensive VSAT contract can offer.&nbsp;For example, a 10 Mbps VSAT profile (MIR, with a guaranteed speed of just 2.5 Mbps) would cost an average of $5000-6000 dollars per month. 10 Mbps is not a lot considering that, as a rule of thumb, you need 25 Mpbs to watch one movie in 4K resolution.In comparison, a yacht can get an unlimited LTE data plan in the Mediterranean for between 2000-3000 euros per month and benefit from speeds ranging between 80 and 300 Mbps depending on the vessel’s location. That is comparable to what you would expect onshore with fiberoptics. Recent developments implemented by both cellular networks and equipment manufacturers have allowed for significant extensions in offshore 4G coverage. For example, <a href="https://www.meridian5g.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Meridian 5G,&nbsp;</a>a company that develops and manufactures 4G/5G equipment specifically for superyachts, has been able to extend its clients’ 4G coverage offshore up to 45 nautical miles (85km).Meridian 5G’s equipment is used by notable yachts and research vessels ranging from 25-160+ metres in size, including Eclipse,&nbsp;Al Mirqab, <em style='box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-size: 13.6px; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;'>Luna, Radiant, Barbara, Nirvana,&nbsp;Ragnar&nbsp;and many more.SuperYacht Times reached out to several vessels using Meridian’s DOME router equipment for comment. “We were refuelling in Albania and realized that, even though we didn’t have SIM cards covering Albania, we still had great 4G speed. It turned out that our Meridian dome router still connected to a Wind tower in Italy that was 75 kilometres away”, says Alexey Kuyevda, chief engineer on board motor yacht Apostrophe.He continues: “What was even more astonishing was that we had 50 Mbps download speed and 30 upload speed. When we used a Pepwave, we rarely got that much, even when we were close to shore.”&nbsp;Another yacht which has opted not to use VSAT is the 41-metre Lady Jade, which observed speeds “good enough for emails and file downloads at 46.3 nautical miles”. This was more than 85 kilometres from the nearest shore off Corfu.In addition, a screenshot taken from a device on board the 83.5-metre motoryacht Savannah while it was cruising in Greece shows that, at 99 kilometres from the nearest cellular tower, the yacht still experienced 21 Mbps download speed and 16 Mbps upload speed.&nbsp;“They weren’t that far from the nearest shore”, comments Dasha Grupman, CEO of Meridian 5G. “But the SIM cards they used only allowed them to connect to the Vodafone network in Greece, and the nearest Vodafone tower was that far away!”“We also observe that a tower located 70 kilometres away can sometimes provide better data connection than a tower which is only a few kilometres away”, Grupman continues. “An example of this would be when you are in a busy port in which the networks and cellular towers are simply overloaded. If you can then connect to a tower further away that is not getting the same load – since most cellular devices can’t reach that far – you would receive a far better, faster and more stable connection.”&nbsp;With all of the above in mind, therefore, the ever more readily-available 4G offers the ideal solution for getting high-quality internet on board – and the technology is only improving, so watch this space! <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/22062/image/large-f728daabe90278ffb38ee006b9783b76.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/22062">

4G: Extending coverage 85km offshore

Though the superyacht business is a relatively small industry, it is packed with international professionals from all walks of life, and it can certainly be easy to get lost in the sea of faces we're presented with at boat shows, yachting events and beyond. In this series of articles, we take a step back from rushed business meetings and hurried networking and sit down with professionals from across the wide spectrum of the superyacht business to learn more about who they are and what they do for the industry. In this week’s episode, we get to know Mikołaj Krol, CEO and Chairman of the Polish yard, Conrad Shipyard.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/26329/image/large-04afbc19c97ac2c1a07af5d8489a8548.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/26329"> Tell me a bit about yourself and your journey into the yacht building industry. My journey started in 2003 at the 'tender' age of 30 - I was completely green! As a learned architect, my father in law (Chairman and co-founder of Conrad Shipyard’s parent company Marine Projects Ltd.) commissioned my wife - as we both studied Architecture together - and myself to design the interior for our first luxury yacht,&nbsp;Escape S,&nbsp;a 27-metre motor yacht designed by Bill Dixon. The board of Marine Projects saw Conrad as an opportunity for the new generation; I guess I was the first in line, so they made me CEO. After being thrown into the deep water, I am happy to say that we still haven’t drowned! How involved are you personally in the design process from the initial concept onwards? As an architect, I am very much involved throughout the whole design process as a consultant to our clients. I also lead our in-house interior design department. Ultimately this is my passion, however, it is also in certain ways, it is a conflict of interest. Historically, being a custom yacht builder, every client is quite different and every design process is different and I am always happy to adapt to our clients' wants and needs, whether they come with a particular design in mind, or we start from scratch. The most important thing is to understand the customer and their needs! I don’t necessarily consider myself a designer - I don’t have my own style that I force on people and we are happy to work with other interior designers - however, what is important to me are details and usability. As far as my personal taste is concerned, I like to strive for timeless elegance. Talk to me through the progress on your largest project to date: the 40-metre, Reymond Langton-designed C133, Viatoris.&nbsp; The client of our C133 is a repeat client and was, until recently, the owner of our Conrad 66, a 20-metre sloop. In certain ways, he always thought about something bigger and I think he became quite excited once we launched Lunar, a 35-metre motorsailer, which was quite a big step for us as a shipyard. As it usually goes, initial discussions started at 29 metres, then we were in the thirties and then we finally ended at 40-metre with our C133. We looked through many different yachts and designs, and the client ultimately really liked&nbsp;Apostrophe, built by Hakvoort. We reached out to Diana Yacht Design for naval architecture and then to Reymond Langton for exterior design. We visited Reymond Langton, the chemistry was right, and we made the deal on our first visit. For us as a shipyard and for Polish shipbuilding in general, this is a huge opportunity and we don’t want to let the owner down.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/13653/image/large-77acbbe8e84cfdfda55aa204fe17bfff.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/13653">One of your most exciting projects was the refit of the Malcolm Miller schooner in 2014, where you completely overhauled her interiors, giving her a transformative new look. Can you talk me through this refit, and how you worked with the owner on this? This was an interesting project because the initial vision of the client was rather simple. He bought the yacht maybe just to save a piece of history. It was a low budget refit, but in the process, when we showed him our vision he fell in love and he let us go with it, increasing the budget several times. The owner was pragmatic, determined and very detailed in letting us know what he wanted. In certain aspects, it was a fight. She had a Juliusz Strawinski exterior and an interior designed by us, and we wanted to make sure there we keep the visual appeal behind the practicality. He fell in love with the transformation and it is the most used yacht by all our owners. He was on it for two years, taking part in the Tall Ship Races. No owner has invested more time on his yacht and he is absolutely happy.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/26330/image/large-08501ab0b35867542ad650a80cfcb346.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/26330">What does the future look like for Conrad? What do you have on the drawing board, and how do you see the shipyard expanding in the future? Sometimes it is funny how things work in circles and come back around. When Conrad started, we built Escape S and now, almost fifteen years later we are finishing on our C133. It has been a tough and challenging road - looking at our fleet of really diverse projects - but I think in certain ways we have paid our dues and I like to think that the best is yet to come. I recently joked with our team, that when I walk by T Central during the Monaco Yacht Show, that my dream would be to have one of those two-storey stands. Who knows, maybe one day we can extend the T Central pontoons and add a stand.

Upon entering her main saloon, it becomes apparent that she is all about a generously warm, welcoming softness that easily combines classic nobility with a delightful sense of coziness. The atmosphere is rich and highly detailed but, thankfully, it doesn't become overly abundant or distracting. There remains ample luxury to enjoy and relish, such as the subtle marquetry and a stunning custom glass encased pillar by Crystal Caviar, located in the grand open staircase. With regards to guest accommodations, Apostrophe offers lush suites for a company of up to ten guests, including the owners, in one sumptuous master suite, two doubles and two twins.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/146516/image/large-de5fab4949d7f5e7bd95e229e9c2e96a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/146516">The full beam master, located on the main deck and consisting of a semicircular stateroom, private study, generous his and hers en suites, and big walk-in wardrobe and dressing room, showcases a well balanced blend of lighting, colours and materials, resulting in maximum volume and a generous sense of openness. Here, the aforementioned rounded windows add curves and a distinct panoramic quality to the views outside. Whether or not the windows are covered, there is a soothing sense of intimacy that will make guests feel right at home. Alabaster glass wall lights, an extravagant headboard and onyx paneling are just some of the many design details that give this room a luxurious vibe.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/146517/image/large-a2545f3700188d3251eb6804f0394045.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/146517">The serene sense of style offers the master stateroom an intimate and glamorous atmosphere, which is extended into the en suites. Here, the two areas are joined in the centre by a circular bath tub and a large shower area. With a colour palette based on cream and brown, the overall style is rich and hearty and, like the main saloon, the sky lounge boasts a curvy and organic feel. Superyacht Apostrophe to star at Monaco show after Norwegian adventure

Hakvoort has delivered superyacht Apostrophe. Custom-built in every respect, Apostrophe features an elegant exterior profile from the boards of Reymond Langton Design Ltd., which was also responsible for the contemporary Art Deco interior. Earlier in the week, Hakvoort launched superyacht Apostrophe. The yard has now shared these new photos of her launch ceremony with us. At the keel laying ceremony three years ago he had described the project as his ‘baby’ and pledged to push himself to the limit make this one of the best vessels afloat.“He was certainly true to his word,” explains project manager Alexander Speksnijder. “Every suggestion made by the interior and exterior architects was accepted regardless of cost, and there have been no compromises in any area of the boat. Looking back at the early renderings of the exterior colour scheme and the glass art aspects of the interior, it is extraordinary how Apostrophe has turned out to be everything the owner intended.”During the launch ceremony, both the yard and the owner spoke openly about how the project had required everyone to pull together in a tough economic climate. “When we first signed the contract for Apostrophe five years ago we were living in a very different world,” said Klaas Hakvoort, co-director of the family run shipyard that bears his name. “Soon afterwards the recession began to bite and the usually cooperative banks refused to finance the construction. The owner’s business was also facing challenges and, together with the brokers Moran Yacht and Ship, whose contribution has been way beyond the norm, we came up with a unique solution. The fact that Apostrophe has already so successfully battled her first storm makes us all the more proud that she is one of the finest yachts ever launched by Hakvoort.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/143593/image/large-47fd59f03406baf5d0b668a320c4d6d3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/143593">The modern design by Reymond Langton features coloured tones, black windows and a striking grey hull, with contrast being offered by the gleaming white superstructure. A wealth of complex shapes in the profile combine with long-running lines from bow to stern to create a unique look. The curved windows in the owner’s area on the main deck are very special and mirrored in the sky lounge above. Taken as a whole, all these aspects make Apostrophe look significantly longer than 40 metres. The contemporary art deco interior features ebonised walnut and makassar joinery with lots of mother-of-pearl inlays, plus a wealth of fine detailing in stainless steel, brushed nickel and leather. Apostrophe’s main entrance is extraordinary – an open stairwell with a custom designed chandelier from Crystal Caviar. The latter company also supplied various artworks, including a glass piece in the bathroom with curved backlit panels and underwater motifs.The full beam master stateroom on the main deck includes a fabulous bathroom furthest forward completely finished in Onyx marble. The stateroom itself has panoramic views through the curved windows and the owner’s area also includes a walk-in dressing room and office. Hakvoort launched the hull of project 417 at casco builder/shipyard Made in Moerdijk. With over one year to go before the final launch, the casco will now be towed to shipyard Hakvoort in Monnickendam where she will be finished. Hakvoort launches hull of 39.7 metre project 417

Hakvoort Shipyard in the Netherlands has signed the contract to build a 39-metre displacement motoryacht for a Russian client. This will be the first ever superyacht project for the owner, who became attracted to the ‘Hakvoort look’ after seeing recent yachts such as Perle Bleue, Flamingo Daze and Spada. A visit to the yard and an agreement was reached for a yacht that is scheduled to be completed in 2011. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/124804/image/large-ff7e472eeece36805e7d6131a12b1d0b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/124804">The yacht will feature a full-beam master stateroom and owner’s study on the main deck. Eight guests will enjoy first class accommodation in four cabins, with dedicated quarters for the captain and four crew members. There will be a special garage for the tender in the lazarette, which will be located just aft of the engine room. A folding out swimming platform will be integrated into the stern and the yacht will have four underwater lights. Naval architecture, construction and engineering design for this project will be by Diana Yacht Design, which has been given the brief to optimise technical accessibility and keep maintenance requirements to a minimum. Both the interior design and the exterior styling will be from the boards of Reymond Langton Design Ltd.
