High-performance vessels are often more technically advanced and more challenging to sail, demanding more crew and investment. Today, most sailing yachts are designed with some sort of performance or sailing ability in mind. Where you want to sail is a major factor when buying any yacht, but especially a sailing yacht. Keel depth is an important consideration when thinking about your desired cruising ground.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/34512/image/large-f57624dac272d7bb2f3f194353a78863.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/34512">Nick Hill, Partner at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hill Robinson (Company)">Hill Robinson</a>, commented, “Many first time big yacht owners buy sailing yachts to do a circumnavigation – which means long term planning for reliable engineering and easy maintenance to traverse large expanses of ocean.”Henry Smith, Partner &amp; Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cecil Wright & Partners (Company)">Cecil Wright &amp; Partners,</a> remarked, “If you are going to spend a lot of time sailing in shallow waters around the Bahamas you will need to consider the draft and it’s quite possible a number of yachts with a fixed keel will be ruled out. Should you opt for a fixed keel, a draft of 4.75m is about optimal, enabling a yacht to enter most popular ports around the world. Should you want a lifting keel then you will need to factor this into the not insignificant cost of a new build and this will likely be reflected in the asking price of a brokerage yacht.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/85211/image/large-78c4406d954cabb70e22eea5cbb9d86a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/85211">Do you intend to charter your yacht or is this going to be a private, family vessel?Yachts entering the charter market demand different focal points than vessels used solely for private sailing. Vessels which are too individualistic will struggle in the charter market, and a yacht which has been tailored for north Atlantic exploration, won’t thrive in the Mediterranean.&nbsp;Tim Langead, Sales Broker at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a>, commented, “The sailing yacht market is almost the opposite of the motor yacht market, in that the majority are private. Whether you are planning to charter a yacht is an important consideration from the beginning of the motor yacht purchasing process, however it’s a question that comes much later when buying a sailing yacht.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/116021/image/large-6773709c37095d55868027bd7feae5b2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/116021">Nick Hill added that crew accommodation is also an important factor. “The majority of sailing yachts have a single accommodation deck, so crew interaction is often inevitable, and the level of service tends to be more informal, simply due to the space and facilities available.”What is the yacht equipped with, such as diving equipment, toys - this can determine size:Henry Smith of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cecil Wright & Partners (Company)">Cecil Wright &amp; Partners</a> commented, “We don’t generally see sailing boats with large inventories of toys – there just isn’t space. The toys we tend to see are smaller sailing dinghies, electric surfboards and similar. However, the era of the chase boat is creeping into sailing yachts now and they are becoming more common. In one instance I have worked on recently, we equipped a chase boat as a mobile dive centre where the owner can rest and enjoy the trappings of his sailing yacht between dives without the need to return to the sailing yacht itself.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/75048/image/large-0d5f3ab5a64d13750bb5164a0c013402.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/75048">What are the advantages and disadvantages of used vs. new sailing yachts?With differing lead times, costs and options for customisation, the difference between any type of new and used yacht is consistent, but sailing yachts have their own particular advantages and disadvantages.&nbsp;Tim Carbury remarked, “Some of the buyers I work with appreciate the provenance of a sailing yacht. There is quite often a lot of nostalgia with sailboats – some owners love the idea of knowing that the boat is 30 years old and has been round the world a few times and been upgraded by different owners along the way. Five things to consider before buying your first sailing yacht

The Royal Yacht Squadron’s Bicentenary International Regatta will take place from 25-31 July. One of the yachts taking part is Mike Slade’s 30 metre Leopard 3. “The Bicentenary gives us the challenge of top level racing in the Solent on our home patch,” comments Mike Slade. “We would love to be on the podium!”.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/154813/image/large-5762e17a70e7bb7b926dd42aa0516684.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/154813">The inclusion of many large yachts has meant that amendments have been made to the crew classification requirements in the IRC event.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/154814/image/large-4477a12aedafa1c1fb14494fd78023e0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/154814">“We wanted our fellow clubs to bring their members along to help us mark this great occasion and initially set the crew classification limits with that in mind,” explains Jonathan Peel, Chairman of the Regatta Committee. “However, it has become apparent that our original limits on Group 3 sailors in some of the larger yachts were unrealistic, not least on safety grounds and, as a result we have made some changes.”Several classic yachts will also be competing at the event, such as the William Fife designed Mariquita built in 1911. The Royal Yacht Squadron Bicentenary

Organisers of the Palma Superyacht Show have announced that the next edition of the event has already surpassed expectations in terms of participation. As a result, the contracting process has now been closed, and there is an outstanding waiting list for participation.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/153259/image/large-cfe78ca676cffe915d22d07020fb13ed.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152690">Furthermore, due to the unprecedented rise in numbers for the third edition, the exhibition space both on land and moorings has been increased. The number of boats to be present at the show has also increased, with over 70 vessels up to 65 metres on display, including Mondanga 2 and Eleonora.Commenting on the rise in numbers this year, the Minister of economy for the Balearic islands Government, Mr. Joaquín García, says, "There are more requests from companies who want to participate then available space. This Boat Show has positioned itself as a national and international leader in the nautical world.”The greatest success of this event, said the Minister, "is having the participation and involvement of all private sectors." Palma Superyacht Show sold out

With the 2015 edition of the Palma Superyacht Show (PSS) fast approaching, organisers have announced an impressive list of participating yachts and exhibitors, with the number of berths and stands available seeing a substantial increase since the inaugural event in 2013.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/153206/image/large-8f1992fa7085443495ee29050756c5fd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/151752">Conducted in partnership with MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association, PSS is a show that is run for the industry, by the industry, providing a platform for brokerage and charter yachts above 24 metres. Amongst the yachts on show this year will be the 49 metre Herreshoff designed Eleonora; the 43 metre Rubeccan; the 38.14 metre Twilight; and the former rescue tug, Mastiff.Hannelore Schmitz of Dahm International speaks highly of the show and its location in Palma, saying, “With every edition, the Palma Superyacht Show is more and more becoming one of the most important superyacht in-water exhibitions worldwide. This fact is also attributed to the perfect location in one of the most frequented superyacht hubs in the Mediterranean!”Jens Ploch of Pantaenius Spain says of the show, "The Palma Superyacht Show has placed the Mallorcan industry back on the international map and is the perfect rounding off to the European boat show season. Palma Superyacht Show prepares for 2015 edition

Last month we reported about the construction of superyacht Wolfhound at Graafship in The Netherlands. Wolfhound, however, is not the only project underway at the yard. The yard is also working on the recreation of the legendary 1903 schooner Ingomar.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/146165/image/large-7299c98bcc4b1582a7e5ee085653d651.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/146165">The yacht is being constructed for Ed Kastelein, who is no stranger to building large yachts, having owned yachts such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1232" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Thendara36.5m (119'9&quot;)">Thendara</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2811" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zaca a te Moana43.8m (143'8&quot;)">Zaca a te Moana</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2081" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Eleonora E49.5m (162'5&quot;)">Eleonora</a>, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/150" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atlantic69.24m (227'2&quot;)">Atlantic</a>, to name just a few.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/146166/image/large-338c37950f7ea7941fa995323842dd9a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/146166">Kastelein's latest project is a two-masted topsail gaff schooner, originally designed in 1903. The 2012 Westward Cup Prizegiving, held in the Pavilion at the Royal Yacht Squadron on Saturday evening (16 June 2012) brought to an end some sublime days of racing and social events put on by the three organising clubs for this year’s invitational event, namely the Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS), the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) and the Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM). <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139737/image/large-0f473a08ded8ab22a1365faa1a9432a7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139737">The RYS Commodore Michael Campbell welcomed the assembled gathering of around 300 guests including the owners, captains and crews of the participating yachts, Eleonora, Mariette and Mariquita. The 2012 Westward Cup Prizegiving

Eleonora, Mariette and Mariquita, the three Big Class yachts taking part in the 2nd running of the Westward Cup in Cowes this week, have faced four days of the best and worst that the British weather could throw at them. The owners and their guests have been enjoying this prestigious and unique invitational yachting event run by the Royal Yacht Squadron, the New York Yacht Club and the Yacht Club de Monaco since Monday. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139693/image/large-67948e876b0f1cf94c25babce95e5b99.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139693">A number of difficult weather-related decisions have had to be taken by the PRO, David Aisher, who stressed that all decisions relating to course-setting have been taken in close collaboration with the owners and their captains on a daily or twice daily basis. “This has been an inclusive event,” commented Mr Aisher, ‘with the owners enjoying a wonderful week of good racing and great social events. Everyone has been supportive of the race management this week, despite the difficulties we have been facing with the weather.” The opening day of racing on Tuesday was challenging enough, with wind speeds ranging from 15-18 knots lowering to 5 knots along parts of the course by the afternoon. That distinct lack of wind at the beginning of the week ended up forcing a decision to cancel racing altogether on Wednesday. Thursday morning’s racing was superb for all three yachts but by the afternoon the winds had increased from the south-east, strengthening to 20-25 knots and Mariquita’s Captain, Jim Thom, took the decision not to race in the afternoon. The remaining competitors raced in the Eastern Solent achieving some excellent speeds but the sea state was very lumpy by the time they had completed Race Three in the overall series. By friday morning, the forecast was looking to wreak havoc with the Royal Yacht Squadron’s Race Officers’ course plans, as 40+ knots were being reported in Hurst Narrows! Two yachts managed to get in a short race this morning with Eleonora taking line honours ahead of Mariette. Mariquita’s team took the decision early on not to go racing in potentially damaging winds. With the Solent forecast for saturday showing predicted gale force winds gusting to 50 knots, it has been agreed to abandon all further racing in the Westward Cup 2012 so there was no racing on the final day, Saturday 16 June. Day three of the 2012 Westward Cup

After a damp and windless Wednesday morning, the Race Officers at the Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) took the decision to abandon racing for the three Big Class yachts vying for the Westward Cup this week in Cowes, Isle of Wight. However, the gloomy weather failed to dampen the spirits of owners and guests however and, indeed, Mariette and Mariquita decided to get in some some practice sailing as the wind picked up and the sky started to turn a pale shade of blue. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139660/image/large-90e200b83250c197ebd799038013a7d6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139660">Today, with all eyes on the weather forecast and watching out for today’s expected low, the Race Officers at the Royal Yacht Squadron decided not to send the yachts around the Island as originally planned and instead ensured they got in two terrific races in the Eastern Solent, racing for the YCM (Yacht Club de Monaco) Trophy. The first race took the fleet of three classic Big Class yachts, Eleonora, 49.5m LOA (160ft), Mariette, 42.06m (138ft) and Mariquita, 38.1m (125ft) from the RYS line to the east to Warner, past the Forts at Seaview, back up the central Solent to South Bramble, to Gurnard and finishing on the RYS line to the delight of the mass of spectators at Princes Green and on Cowes Parade. The 28nm race was won by Mariette, followed by Mariquita with Eleonora in third place. Conditions were beginning to freshen and it was a very successful race. This afternoon’s racing had the yachts heading east once again to the mark at Mother Bank, thence to East Bramble followed by a long run to West Lepe, and back up the Western Solent to the finish at the RYS. Conditions were deteriorating as the wind increased from the south-east, strengthening to 20-25 knots, not damaging but perhaps a little hard on some of the older yachts and indeed Mariquita decided to call it a day and returned home to base before even starting this afternoon’s race. Richard Salaman, Safety Officer, commented, “In terms of the withdrawal of Mariquita, the decision taken by the Captain, Jim Thom, not to start the second race, was probably wise in the deteriorating conditions.” For the remaining two yachts, they had a hard time of it until they got to Mother Bank where they turned north-west to East Bramble which gave them an excellent wind and they obtained some very good speeds all the way to West Lepe and then across the finishing line by which time the sea state was becoming very lumpy. Looking ahead to tomorrow, there is a deepening depression tracking north from Biscay with a pressure prediction of 982Mbs which on its present rack could produce winds in excess of Force 5-7. There is some uncertainty as to the exact track it is going to take and a decision will be taken at 0830 on Friday as to whether racing is going to be possible on Friday. The 2nd running of the Westward Cup commenced on the water yesterday at 1100hrs, bringing together the cream of the world’s Big Class yachts in a blaze of excitement and anticipation of some great racing in Solent waters for the owners and their guests. These three prestigious clubs have again joined forces to revive Big Class yachting in Cowes and Mr Zbynek Zak, the originator of the event in 2010 celebrating the 100th anniversary of the launch of the racing schooner Westward in 1910, says he is equally proud and delighted to be back in Cowes. As the boats set off they made a stunning sight powering up under full sail in a northerly breeze of 15-18 knots and heading off into the western Solent with Mariette as the front runner. The course of 29nm saw the fleet experience variable wind speeds with winds decreasing severely as the race progressed and Eleonora fell behind with Mariette and Mariquita enjoying a spot of match racing. David Aisher, Principal Race Officer, commenting after racing yesterday afternoon, said, "Conditions were terrific first thing, but the wind went left, later abated and was recorded at 5 knots at one point which made it a struggle for the largest boat in the fleet, Eleonora." The two ‘smaller’ yachts were racing with their full race crew complement today plus their guests whilst Eleonora are also hosting a group of young sailors between the ages of 18 to 23 on board this week. They are novices to this type of racing and have been invited by the RYS and NYYC to introduce some new blood into classic yacht racing. Mariquita took line honours finishing at 14.31.43, closely followed by Mariette 14.35.16 with Eleonora completing her first day’s racing in Cowes at 15.20.34. Day one of the 2012 Westward Cup

It has been confirmed by J.P. Morgan Asset Management, title sponsor of the Round the Island Race and title sponsor of triple Olympic Gold medallist Ben Ainslie CBE, that Ben's final public racing appearance prior to his bid for a fourth Gold medal in his Finn, will be on board the Big Class yacht Eleonora E, a schooner with some impressive vital statistics which has entered this year’s Round the Island Race on Saturday 30th June. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/138994/image/large-b63f035dae10ad7be2ec1c2f179cfd2a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/138994">The Big Class yacht Eleonora E is an exact replica of the schooner Westward which was launched on March 31, 1910 as hull number 692 at the Herreshoff Manufacturing Co. in Bristol, Rhode Island, USA. She was arguably one of the most famous and best known racing schooners in the world. Eleonora E was built at the Van der Graaf shipyard in Holland and was launched in March 2002. Since then, she has successfully participated in a number of classic sailing regattas and hosted on board a number of high profile guests during her charter activities. She was last seen in the Solent in July 2010 when she competed in the inaugural Westward Cup and she will be returning to compete in the 2012 Event just prior to the Round the Island Race. During the Round the Island Race, Ben will co-helm with Eleonora’s owner, with the assistance of Eleonora’s captain Mike McMillan. Sharing the 25- strong crew duties will be a number of J.P. Olympic Gold medallist Ben Ainslie to race on Eleonora E

The Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) has confirmed the line-up of participating yachts racing in the second Westward Cup regatta, taking place between the 11th and the 16th June 2012. The competing yachts are Altair, Eleonora, Mariette and Mariquita. The organisers have set out to replicate a style, class and regatta atmosphere matching the period when Westward and the Big Class yachts all raced in Cowes, the birthplace of such elegant racing during the 1920s and 30s. The racing area will predominately be in the Solent and courses will be, where possible, set to mirror those used by Big Class yachts in those glory days. The Westward Cup 2012 confirmed

It is for the occasion of the Voiles de Saint-Tropez and in order to celebrate the end of the racing season, that the Yacht Club de Monaco is organising a “La Belle Classe” cocktail in the harbour of Saint-Tropez, aboard four classic yachts: Tuiga (1909), Mariquita (1911), Elena (1911 replica) and Shamrock V (1930). Saint-Tropez Municipality honoured by La Belle Classe

Another day in Saint-Tropez that required patience from competitors and the race committee alike. At the scheduled 11am start time for the Modern fleet, the breeze was unsettled and would take a delay of nearly two hours to get racing underway. The Moderns and Wally classes finally found breeze further offshore where they eventually started. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132514/image/large-bd8887e59c9613f10b845587b61096ee.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132514">In the Golfe de Saint-Tropez, there was not a breath of wind to start, then at 1pm someone hit the wind switch and an easterly breeze filled in. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132515/image/large-cbc62ca8530922bb37d26cf061bf3500.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132515">The ‘grand epoque’ big boat class that included Thendara, Altair, Elena, Sunshine, Milena, and Iduna got off the starting line around 3pm and were sent on a 14 mile nautical mile course that had a short leg to a mark upwind and then a downwind reach to a turning mark off St Raphael and a beat back to the finish line off of Saint-Tropez. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132516/image/large-19ba72b3f437b4e4a1f0ebfc3355701d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132516">Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, and La Nioulargue before that, has every year since the inception in 1981, included both a stunning collection of modern racing yachts, as well as traditional boats which date back over 100 years. At each and every regatta world-wide, where the classics sail, there is a specific criteria for what constitutes the “Tradition” class – here in Saint-Tropez it is quite simple: all boats built before 1975 – regardless of design or construction. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132517/image/large-c1780624cbcf6a37a342b644286ec16e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132517">So the Tradition class at Les Voiles features an interesting mix which includes the oldest yacht here, Partridge, a 22.5 metre gaff cutter built in 1885, to an impressive collection of Fife schooners and cutters; the Sparkman &amp; Stephens designed yawl, Stormy Weather; and Running Tide, a well-known American maxi from the late ‘60s. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132518/image/large-7fa35dca4c15e1ed210f99a4680565c6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132518">Newly launched last year and sailing here is the impeccable Herreshoff schooner, Elena. One year in planning and almost two years in build, the 55-metre (180’) gaff-rigged schooner, was meticulously built in steel, as a replica of the original Elena, built almost one hundred years earlier. The owner of the original Elena, Morton Plant’s directive was to build a boat to beat Westward, which in its’ day was one of the most competitive yachts and clearly the boat to beat. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132519/image/large-f828d2c8d3b419d9369f218ef0e811eb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132519">Elena is nearly identical to that of Westward – in fact above the waterline she is identical. But underwater, the keel was deeper, which moved the ballast lower and improved upwind performance. It seemed to work, as Elena went on to win the King’s Cup TransAtlantic Race from New York to Spain. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132520/image/large-b059fa187e75b89579aa47dc316310fc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132520">Today the ‘new’ Elena is under the command of captain Steve McLaren, who has previously been at the helm of the Herreshoff schooner Eleonora, and the Bruce King-designed Alejandra before that. McLaren exudes quiet confidence, a trait that is handy on the starting line steering a 215 ton, 180’ yacht into seemingly tight places. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132521/image/large-c94c41c9d12282b82a6f007c38ebf1ae.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132521">Elena regularly sails with a crew of eight, as she has for most of the past year chartering in the Med; here at Les Voiles, her only regatta his year, racing demands a competent crew of up to 40. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132522/image/large-3f81a644799639481424a8de7f175163.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132522">Elena was off the start line of today’s race at speed and in good position, with Moonbeam III below and Thendara and Altair just above and ahead. With a clear opening, Elena quickly found her pace, and by the downwind reach, had passed the others and took the lead on the water. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132523/image/large-8fae9339d02bd09242330f7f81742f78.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132523">Her towering rig made of Oregon pine and Sitka spruce – the mainmast is 42 metres above the waterline – allows for an impressive 1180 sq m sail area upwind and 1800 sq m downwind. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132524/image/large-83b35adb9ebbffe25c42079c8f44f06d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132524">With a crew boss to oversee maneuvers, communication is key and with length on deck of 41 metres, a radio is used to talk to the foredeck crew. As well, with a draft of 17 ft, attention is paid near shore to make sure there’s enough water below. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132525/image/large-50caa162f7829cd6d94a477e7513e426.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132525">On the beat back to the finish, with the breeze shifting, Elena gained ground on both Thendara and Altair which together carried on further on starboard around the bottom mark legging out further offshore. Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez Day 3: Conditions worth the wait

After celebrating her 100th anniversary in September 2009, Monaco’s 15 M IR maritime ambassador launched her new regatta season in style by winning the Westward Cup in Cowes. Organised from 5 to 10 July 2010, the Westward Cup 2010 was an initiative of Zbynek Zak, owner of Eleonora to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the launch of the original Westward. This lovely schooner was launched on 31 March 1910 as hull number 692 at the Herreshoff Manufacturing Co. in Bristol, Rhode Island, USA. She was designed by the “Wizard of Bristol”, Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, the man behind the America’s Cup defenders which resisted all six challenges from 1893 to 1920. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/131903/image/large-8c8f65f4c8e316b49c726f4360e3126a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/131903">Her dimensions were: length overall 160 ft (49.5 m), length on deck 135 ft (41.5 m), length on waterline 96 ft (29.30 m), beam 27 ft (8.20 m), draft 17 ft (5.20 m) and sail area 12,000 sq ft (1’115 m²). Her displacement was 214 tons. Nathanael Greene Herreshoff is certainly the most famous and accomplished American yacht designer and builder of all times. For some 75 years “Capt. Nat”, as he was called, dominated the naval design fraternity as an innovator who created vessels that were advanced and extreme, but always, always beautiful. For a week Mariquita, Mariette, Eleonora and Tuiga, who had come to Cowes from the Mediterranean especially for the event, raced in the Solent. The aim was to recreate the ambiance, style and elegance of the Big Class classic yacht regattas of the 1910s and 1930s when Westward raced in Cowes. It was an exceptional event which enjoyed the support of the Royal Yacht Squadron, the New York Yacht Club and the Yacht Club de Monaco through La Belle Classe. It was the first time that these prestigious Yacht Clubs had agreed to work together and pool their skills for a centenary. For the occasion, the crew on Tuiga were nearly all members of the Yacht Club de Monaco who were joined by tactician, Harold Cudmore, a legend on the British sailing scene having taken part in many America’s Cup races. Also on board was David Arnold, a sailor who originates from Cowes and is used to the sandbanks and subtleties of the Solent’s currents which are among the strongest in Europe. From day one Tuiga, helmed by the YCM’s Secretary General Bernard d’Alessandri, demonstrated her racing qualities and desire to repeat her 2008 success when she won Cowes Week. Just 27 seconds! That was the narrow gap which separated the Monegasque yacht, second in real time, from Mariquita at the end of the first tightly fought race which lasted three hours and 20 minutes. The next day in a steady 15-20 knot wind, which favoured the big boats from the start, the crew on Tuiga had to concentrate hard throughout the 38 nautical mile course to limit as much as possible the lead her competitors were inevitably going to have in real time. Mariette crossed the line first with an average speed of nine knots (!) followed by Eleonora and Mariquita. Tuiga achieved her objective and finished second in compensated time. On the third day of racing, the 32 nautical mile course with the tide and 10 marks to get round proved a real challenge. It was to require more manoeuvres by all the crews than on the previous days. Tuiga and Mariquita had the best starts and seized the lead from the first tacks over the other two competitors. Tuiga is a real gem in these wind conditions and for nearly four hours the Monegasque 15 Metre was the equal of Mariquita. It was only on the last tack that the latter drew ahead and crossed the line first in real time. On the last day of racing which took the fleet round the Needles, the western-most point of the Isle of Wight, Tuiga clinched victory not only in compensated time but also in real time with an average speed of seven and a half knots. And so Tuiga wins the Westward Cup 2010. The Yacht Club de Monaco is delighted not only with this win but also for having lived up yet again to the expectations of the “Spirit of Tuiga” Club which unites all those who love this 1909 Fife design. She really is the finest maritime ambassador that the Principality could hope to have today. Tuiga wins the Westward Cup in Cowes

The Owners and Captains of the Big Class classic sailing yachts Cambria, Mariette, and Eleonora (Founding Members) met on 26th March 2010 and agreed to found the Big Class Association (BCA). This Association has resulted from discussions held over recent years amongst the Owners and Captains of the large classic sailing yachts who have agreed that there is a need to, amongst other things; represent the interests of this group of yachts. The purpose of the BCA is to: <ul> <li>represent the interests of the Big Class yachts with organisers and sponsors of classic yacht regattas, race committees, and rating bodies, and other parties involved in classic yacht sailing activities</li> <li>to be actively and closely involved in the organisation of Big Class regattas in the spirit and atmosphere of the historical Big Class races as they were known in the 1910s – 1930s, similar to the Westward Cup 2010 that is being staged from 5th – 10th July in Cowes to commemorate the centenary of Westward’s launch and to initiate the revival of the Big Class racing</li> <li>develop and promote safety recommendations for racing the Big Class yachts</li> <li>to make available a pool of know-how and experience to owners and captains who are interested in building or restoring a Big Class sailing yacht</li> <li>agree on and implement a rating system applicable specifically to Big Class yachts</li> <li>develop a platform for sharing information and experience related to the activities of the Big Class yachts. </li>
</ul>In due time, the BCA will develop its own infrastructure, website, and other means of communication with its members and other interested parties. It is one of the key objectives of the Founding Members to invite in due course other Big Class yachts such as Altair, Britannia, Elena, Germania, Lulworth, and Thendara to join the BCA. Other yachts may be invited to join as and when the BCA agrees their membership. Following the Westward Cup 2010 in July in Cowes, the Founding Members are already considering Big Class invitational racing events in June 2011 in the Mediterranean and in 2012 in the Solent.
