Camper & Nicholsons has announced the in-house sale of the 46m Sanlorenzo yacht Trident. 

Following the sad news of Ed Dubois’ passing last week, here we take a moment to look back on one of our favourite interviews with Ed here at SuperYacht Times. Merijn de Waard sat down with Dubois, the mastermind behind the iconic designed fleet, at the 2015 edition of the Dubois Cup.

How did the Dubois Cup come about?

The idea formed during the 2007 America’s Cup, held in Valencia, and it was this gathering that led to the idea of a race. It was two of our clients who first said, “I’ve counted eight of your boats here, why don’t you have a little regatta?” I thought they were joking. They said “No, you should do it, it’s good publicity, the boats are more or less the same type and they race at the same speed!” So that’s what started it, it was actually not my idea as much as that of the owner’s.

Has the event paid off for you, in terms of business?

Yes. We had a future client in 2007 who at the time was still undecided whether or not he wanted to commit to a new yacht. We brought him to the regatta that same year and it pushed him over the edge. So yes, definitely. Another client in 2011 was discussing the design for Escapade with a few designers, including myself. He attended the Cup later that year with his wife, and they loved it. He later told me it was the event that made him decide to go ahead with the ship.

	Following on the success of motor yachts such as Como and Kiss, have you received more interest for projects such as these?

Como was very successful and partially because it was quite different. She was the eighth boat we have done with the owner and the previous motor yacht we did, the old Como, was built by Alloy Yachts and had a completely different style. So in 2011 I did a new design following on the old concept, one with a vertical bow and reverse sheer. She is different but I always knew that it will catch people’s imagination. I am bound to say this but my whole life is about drawing boats and getting the thrill out of that.

 

And Kiss shares a very similar design…

We began discussing Kiss in 2010 already with a client who was looking for a yacht to sail around the world with his family. The yacht would initially have been built at a shipyard in Ukraine, Jongert was even considered, but eventually they opted for Feadship, which I was really glad about as they just enjoy working with us.

You have had a very long standing relationship with Alloy Yachts. What was the reason for your projects being built by them? Price, quality, your relationship with the yard?

The price. When Neville Crichton wanted to build one of our designs in an established New Zealand yard in 1989, he decided to go with Alloy Yachts. They were about 30 people then and hardly established.

When Esprit was launched in 1991, he sold her for double the money. In 1993 they were still only 30-40 people, but they were already making money on the boats that they were building. Basically, you could build them in Kiwi Dollars and sell them for U.S. Dollars. And back then it was over 2:1, so they built it for NZ $10,000,000 and sold it for NZ $20,000,000, about US $10,000,000, which is double. People were making money. So we established this relationship with Alloy Yachts by chance really. It developed, and we built 23 boats with them in the end.

In terms of technology, what is going to be the next big change in the sailing industry?

In this industry, change will always be driven by materials. Carbon fibre is increasingly used for larger projects due to its weight-saving advantages and additional stiffness – key for sailing performance. Countering this however is the trend towards greater use of glass.

Glass as a design feature is becoming very popular, glass superstructures are the latest trend, but they are a big obstruction to weight saving. Advancement in glass toughening and lamination has enabled this, but key technological drivers will always be geared towards efficiency and performance. Any weight-saving technologies are always quickly adopted and weight saving is having a big impact at the smaller end of the market too, with yachts of 30 - 35 metres, designed to be much more race-orientated. Those are the technologies to watch.

Ed Dubois, founder of Dubois Naval Architects, will be sadly missed by the entire industry and appreciated for his creative impact.

Designated designer: Celebrating Ed Dubois

The International Superyacht Society (ISS) announced the winners of the 2015 Design &amp; Leadership Awards yesterday at the 25th anniversary of ISS’s Awards Gala in Fort Lauderdale. In terms of the superyachts, award categories are separated into motor and sailing yachts in various size ranges, best interior design and best refit, in which six yachts were listed as winners with the 51.8 metre Elfje awarded two titles in the ceremony, including best interior.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156961/image/large-f088ba19c303a25b2bdb9cb136fa45bb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156961">The 33.04 metre Win Win from Baltic was awarded best sailing yacht between 24 to 40 metres, whilst best sailing yacht of 40+ metres was awarded to Elfje, built by Royal Huisman. What started out as a visionary owner’s dream to create the ultimate family-friendly superyacht, evolved into the masterpiece we know today as Kiss. This brand new 46 metre not only serves to please her guests of all ages, but also inspires a relaxed and truly natural lifestyle on board, with eco-friendly features to suggest that doing so will be without a care in the world.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155678/image/large-75b55e46eec1cb39aabecf304725a654.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155678">As with Feadship’s former Dubois-designed 46 metre Como (now Lady May), the partnership between designers and shipyard proved to be a vital ingredient in the success of the project. The owner decided on the Dutch yard after considering a few other yacht builders from other nations and in the Netherlands, but soon came to realise that Feadship’s experience in the building of Como will be of great value to his project, and above all, finished to the highest standards.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155679/image/large-373cac40727c2f5e34f6101f86347c36.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155679">What might seem like a close resemblance to Lady May, Kiss is very much a unique yacht with individual features that sets her apart from her sister. To adhere to the owner’s request for a family-friendly yacht that can be used for different occasions and by different groups of guests, Ed Dubois drew Kiss to offer the best possible usage of external deck spaces that would encourage an indoor outdoor lifestyle on board. Children and active guests would easily be able to move around the yacht while remaining guests can enjoy the tranquility of her interior spaces without feeling separated.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155680/image/large-14e4af6481e6b5d57585ce15437b3b3f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155680">Kiss portrays a powerful image through her towering superstructure and bulky and imposing hull lines, topped of with a crowned mast that supports her central exhaust system. Large cut-outs in the forward bulwarks have been replaced with singular pieces of glass allowing natural light into the VIP cabin inside, and forms part of the yacht’s distinctive exterior features.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155681/image/large-0bf0d88c13a532ff0e8586651057bbc4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155681">The sundeck offers a perfect spot to escape Kiss’ larger exterior areas, with a private Jacuzzi and intimate dining area ideal for quiet days at anchor. The owner’s cabin is presented with spectacular views through its private forward-facing windows. Guest areas are exceptionally quite, and the comfort provided by the stable and solid feel when at anchor or underway is a one of Kiss’ notable features to be experienced first-hand.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155691/image/large-fda3807e55c25a5a0eaab78178f07a60.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155691">It is very rare indeed that a custom built yacht such as Kiss becomes available for purchase so soon after her launch. The yacht presents the opportunity of owning a brand new, quality crafted and meticulously designed yacht without the need of having to factor in lengthy production times. Superyacht of the Week: Feadship superyacht Kiss

The 46.4 meter Dubois designed superyacht Kiss, which was launched by Feadship in February, sparked a great interest within the superyacht industry due to the innovative design which she shares with her close sistership Lady May (ex. Como).<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155238/image/large-16a76edc547bbb8d87bac7bd76146ccf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155238">The latest images of her interior and exterior guest areas reveal a contemporary space elegantly decorated with a mix of rich fabrics and contrasting surfaces, while retaining an incredible sense of spaciousness on board. Superyacht Como in Saint Tropez

On saturday, Feadship's newly launched 46.40-metre superyacht Kiss was christenend, in a ceremony that made the most of the Valentine’s Day spirit. The story behind Kiss, which is the first Feadship to be metallically painted, is linked in a number of ways to the 46.22-metre Feadship Como, which was launched in 2014.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/152658/image/large-45e5dd354e3d22a21b7257cd006db6bb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152658">Henk de Vries commented: “With yachts like Como and Kiss, we are effectively building a sporty type boat around our average size of over 15 years ago, but now with all the know-how and intelligence Feadship has developed,” De Vries explains. “This facilitates a clever approach to high-end production, one which remains entirely custom while keeping the costs of a Feadship of this size within the bounds of reason.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/152659/image/large-b3ebb74bdba74c6828e490676ea8796d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152659">Just 6 months after signing the contract for Como, designer Ed Dubois came to Feadship with another client. “Ed was highly appreciative of the way that the Feadship yards work with outside designers as well as the in-house naval architects at Feadship De Voogt,” De Vries continues. “Even though Como and Kiss have similar looks they are very different yachts. Most if not all yards would have taken a platform approach based on Como’s hull, offering the client a discount for the reduced amount of engineering. That’s not how Feadship does things."<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/152660/image/large-0f6fbb2fdb4130c9a32d77f73fcb8da3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152660">“The owner of Kiss required a more conventional speed of 16 knots (Como is 19), so she has a different power plant. And while Como is a sports boat with an open top deck, Kiss has a complete master penthouse on the upper deck. This obviously added both volume and weight to the yacht, hence requiring a revised lines plan. Make no mistake, these are two different Feadships.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/152661/image/large-c96fdb0d6ae882eba1881a846f5ebd3b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152661">The interior of the boat is from the boards of Redman Whiteley Dixon and features a stark, crisp look. Mark Whiteley and Toby Ecuyer started together, Toby and Douglas Hynd completed the design work. “They did a fantastic job on Kiss,” adds De Vries. “It is never easy to take over an interior design project once underway and, on behalf of Feadship, I would like to say how impressed we are again with RWD's work.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/152662/image/large-950f3ab68d8be634a18d8075e7a8f379.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152662">By Maarten Janssen

Feadship comments on launch superyacht Kiss

For the third time in a row this month, we can bring you the exclusive news that Feadship has launched yet another yacht, this time the 46.4 metre Dubois designed project 689. The yacht is the second Feadship vessel to be designed by the British naval architect Ed Dubois and his team, with the 46 metre superyacht Como being successfully delivered to her owner’s in 2014. The owner’s sleeping cabin in a warm and welcoming environment, with panoramic windows filling the space with natural light and breathtaking views. Exclusive: Feadship launch 46 metre superyacht

Last week I visited the Feadship shipyard in Makkum, the Netherlands, as part of the Holland Yachting Group Press Tour 2014.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/149009/image/large-104a51aa46c910c1564f6c91f4b08bb8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/148553">Unfortunately, some of Feadship's current projects are being kept under wraps, such as the 70 metre pictured above. We have, however, been allowed to unveil more information on several of the projects currently underway at the three shipyards that make up Feadship, together with Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects.The first project is Hull 686, a twin screw motor yacht with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. She measures an impressive 83.50 metres, with a 12.50 metre beam and 3.95 metre draught. Her interior design is by Cristina Benardeau.Hull 686 will accommodate 12 guests over four large staterooms, one VIP stateroom and the luxurious Owner’s suite. The crew of up to 26 will be accommodated over eight cabins, as well as personal cabins for the captain, engineer and two officers. Among other amenities and water toys, this vessel will come with two 9.0 metre tenders and one 15’ tender.The second project underway at Feadship in Aalsmeer is Hull 687. This 60.35 metre motor yacht is also built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, and will have a fuel capacity of 120,000 litres. Her interior is the work of renowned Dutch design company, Sinot Yacht Design.She will accommodate ten guests over four guest staterooms, as well as the generous Owner’s stateroom. Her twelve crew will be accommodated over six crew cabins. Storage rooms, laundry, the galley and the crew mess will all be located on the lower deck. Hull 687 comes complete with a 7 metre tender and wave runners.The 46.40 metre motor yacht Hull 689 is the next project underway at Feadship, with naval architecture by Dubois Naval Architects and interior design by Redman Whitely Dixon. She is powered by 2x Caterpillar C32 / 895 kW engines. This vessel will accommodate 8 guests in total over two double staterooms and two twin staterooms.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/149010/image/large-e1646732dd13a7af0fe85572428c92a6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/141064"> The fourth vessel is the smallest project underway at Feadship, Hull 690, a 44.20 metre twin screw motor yacht with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. Naval architecture is by Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects, with interior design by Bannenberg &amp; Rowell Design. She accommodates 8 guests, in three large staterooms, two of which are easily convertible into one large stateroom with separate seating, and one large full beam VIP stateroom forward. The generous Owner’s suite comes with a luxurious study, double bathroom and walk in dressing room.The crew quarters are comfortable and spacious, with a private en-suite room for the captain, and two double en-suite crew cabins. Hull 690 comes equipped with a swimming pool with lifting floor, among other exciting features.Hull 808 is the largest project currently underway at the shipyard, a breath taking 101.50 metre project, with 14.10 metre beam and 4.10 draught. She has a fuel capacity of 220,000 litres and is powered by 4x MTU 16V4000M73, 2560 kW engines. The impressive vessel boasts naval architecture by Feadship, with exterior styling by Tim Heywood and interior designs by François Zuretti and Peter Marino.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/149011/image/large-e5dddb7b495ecadd3fa7c2f6fe7b438f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/149011">The 14 guests she easily sleeps will be accommodated over 6 guest staterooms and one VIP stateroom, together with a double Owner’s cabin. Accommodation is also provided for the captain, 4 officers, 22 crew members and two staff members to ensure that guests have the most comfortable and opulent experience on board. She comes with one master tender, one guest tender, one crew tender and 2 jet skis.The sixth project being undertaken is a 66.25 metre twin screw motor yacht, Hull 809. She accommodates twelve guests over 6 luxurious cabins, including four guest suites and a VIP large stateroom which can also be converted into two guest suites on the main deck. The Owner’s suite comes complete with his &amp; hers bathroom facilities, as well as facilities that provide the ultimate exclusivity. This consists of a full Owner’s deck covering the full beam of the yacht and an extendable balcony and lounge area that can be closed off with sliding doors to create a separate room.Hull 809 boasts naval architecture by Feadship, and an interior design by Eidsgaard Design. Her many amenities include a sauna, gym and massage room as well as a 26’ tender, an impressive 28’ tender and 2 wave runners. She can accommodate 17 crew in total.The 57.45 metre motor yacht Hull 810 has, again, been engineered by Feadship, with exterior styling created by Eidsgaard Design in conjunction with Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects. She is powered by 2x MTU 12V4000M63 1500 kW engines, and has a fuel capacity of 116,000 litres. She will accommodate 14 crew in total, and comes equipped with one 8.00 metre tender and one 9.00 metre tender.Last but not least, the final project currently underway at the Feadship shipyards is Hull 1005. This superyacht is an imposing 92.10 metres, with a beam of 14.30 metres and draught of 3.85 metres. The naval architect is, once more, by Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects, and her interior design has been undertaken by Seymour Diamond in cooperation with the Owner.<strong style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; background-image: none; color: rgb(102, 102, 102); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px; text-align: -webkit-center;"><img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/149012/image/large-5ecd71e2f0fd0eb7a2b885e604286d3d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/144135">Fourteen guests will be easily accommodated on board, including four children in two children’s staterooms, the lavish Owner’s suite and eight guests over four guest staterooms. A total of 22 crew can be accommodated on board. Projects currently under construction at Feadship

Dubois has announced that the second Dubois designed superyacht is about to commence build at Feadship. Apart from its excellent fabrication and fit-out, this new 46.4 metre yacht will be notable for its unusual accommodation layout; the entire upper deck is given over to a private owner’s apartment complete with a six-seat dining table on the aft deck and a comfortable saloon. The sleeping cabin occupies the forward section behind a panoramic sweep of windows. The top deck also features a private hot tub.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/141064/image/large-7c30b588b205eeb671d657ab0e15a3d2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/141064">Guests are also beautifully looked after, with three spacious twin cabins and a double down below, while the VIP is found in the position more commonly claimed by the owner. This capacious main-deck suite occupies the forward section of the superstructure with spectacular sea views assured thanks to the glazed bulwarks. The hull windows will also allow plenty of daylight into the lower guest accommodation, where one of the twin cabins can convert to form a double.With a transatlantic range and displacing around 360 tonnes, this capable and luxurious craft is powered by two 1,450hp Caterpillars giving a top speed of 16.5 knots and very economical cruising at 14.The interior will be designed by Redman Whiteley Dixon, and she is due for delivery in 2015.
