Francesca Webster joined Mark Tucker aboard&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3834" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="King Benji46.7m (153'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2024">King Benji</a>&nbsp;last November to hear about how the studio has evolved following a busy season of launches.Over the past year, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/329" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Design Unlimited (Company)">Design Unlimited</a> has made waves in the superyacht design world, with the studio’s most ambitious project to date, the 58-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1821" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Damen Yachting (Company)">Damen Yachting</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pink Shadow58.0m (190'3&quot;)Damen Yachting2023">Pink Shadow</a>, making her debut at the 2024 Monaco Yacht Show. Sharing the stage was another of their recent creations, the 46.7-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya</a> explorer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3834" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="King Benji46.7m (153'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2024">King Benji</a>, first showcased at MYBA in the spring. These distinctive yachts – with their respective dark green and bright blue hulls and vibrant interiors – have drawn significant attention, illustrating the breadth of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/329" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Design Unlimited (Company)">Design Unlimited</a>’s capabilities.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/349343/image/large-398e4d887eff41695720ead8fb18240f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/349343">At the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, we sat down with studio founder Mark Tucker to discuss the studio’s evolution over the past five years and to gain insight into future projects.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/307905/image/large-bdf34a13d17caf5dbd5e58a4f94ccf58.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/307905">We last sat down with you in 2019; can you give us a bit of an insight into how the studio has evolved over the past five years?Well, the team has grown significantly and we now have 16 designers in the studio, doubling our pre-Covid size. That growth has really been a reaction to the work we are doing, not only the custom projects but also the production work for companies like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a>, with whom we collaborate for the interior design of all new products in their range. A production design role like that demanded an expansion of our FF&amp;E capabilities to handle the increased demand on our interior decoration, furnishings, and materials department, and therefore our FF&amp;E team has doubled in size.As a result, we have also developed our studio facilities to accommodate our expansive international samples, fabrics and material library. We have also created more inviting spaces for our clients to meet and collaborate with us, while bringing all our research materials into one space, which is a significant improvement.Since 2019, we have also gained three other new team members who focus particularly on CAD and computer visualisations. This has been partly driven by our customers' needs, especially in production, to show prospective clients exactly what the end result will look like.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/304103/image/large-d04ac3cf4161528052f5854e845c4324.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/304103">The work you do for&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a>&nbsp;is extensive. How much of the studio’s time is devoted to custom projects?We have about a 60/40 split, with 60 percent of our activities dedicated to production yachts, though of course, it varies because custom yachts come in waves; you do a lot of work over a period, then there is a quiet phase while it’s being built, and then supervision at the end. The production work helps smooth that curve and keeps the team engaged. With production, you also get to see your designs realised faster – very often only a year and a half from design to seeing it in the water, which I think is great for the team.We have also now moved into the residential sector for the first time, having recently completed a house on Venetian Islands in Miami and another down in the Florida Keys. Both of those projects came to us through existing yacht clients, so it has been a natural evolution, but we are now receiving an increasing number of requests for residential work, which is an exciting development.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/304100/image/large-cb9cedcbe323aa9be32e0afcd25bbdf0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/304100">This year was obviously huge for the studio, with&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pink Shadow58.0m (190'3&quot;)Damen Yachting2023">Pink Shadow</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3834" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="King Benji46.7m (153'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2024">King Benji</a>&nbsp;exhibited at Monaco. Has there been a shift in studio perception?Yes, it was fantastic. Our yachts photograph beautifully, but they need to be experienced in person – to touch, feel, and see how the colours work. That’s something you only really get by walking through the space yourself. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3834" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="King Benji46.7m (153'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2024">King Benji</a> has also been an open boat at Fort Lauderdale this year, so anyone could take a tour onboard with the crew, which is a very unusual but exciting situation.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/307888/image/large-ee0966fbafeee87c781fa6b9ae38c89c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/307888"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pink Shadow58.0m (190'3&quot;)Damen Yachting2023">Pink Shadow</a>&nbsp;was heavily in demand at Monaco Yacht Show and she has been extensively published, which is fantastic for visibility.Regarding the perception of the studio, we’ve had strong inquiries since, but as you know, these are both unique interior design projects. We don’t stereotype ourselves by saying, “This is all we can do.” We work on a wide range of projects for a wide range of clients, and this is reflected in our portfolio. More recently, we are getting requests from clients who want something more relaxed and cosier, with little areas where they can sit and unwind, instead of large vast spaces. It’s great for the team as well, as it keeps the work challenging and interesting.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308761/image/large-e95e2738e3cfb2350ec3c4571fa72e02.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308761">With a team of 16, how do you balance such different identities across projects, from explorers to sailing yachts?We have a structured approach that really helps, starting each new project by working closely with the owner to define the direction through mood boards and material samples. Once we’re aligned, the project tends to fall into place. We check back at each stage to make sure we’re on track with the initial concept. This process keeps everything clear and prevents us from veering off course.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/338390/image/large-220d7a2fb0a6cd10072e2a95796b4fb0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/338390">People remember certain statement projects, but not every client wants the same thing. Some like to look at bold designs but wouldn’t necessarily want to own one. We can also cater to those who prefer a more general or timeless style, often considering resale value. If you look at our portfolio, there is a huge range, with the more sedate interiors like that of the 53-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/276" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mirage53.0m (173'11&quot;)Feadship1979">Mirage</a>, or the 54-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4899" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ravenger53.9m (176'10&quot;)Baltic Yachts2017">Ravenger</a>, which differ greatly from projects like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3834" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="King Benji46.7m (153'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2024">King Benji</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/222824/image/large-3c4d4d4f42aeaea4f2120cd0749e4670.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/222824">Can you share a bit more about your relationship with&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a>?Our work with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a> is highly collaborative, and we oversee the entire interior design process. We’ve worked with them for specific projects for over 20 years, but two years ago, we were asked to take on the interior work for the brand and help them develop a new look. We’re responsible for the overall material selection, and we recently launched a new collection with all-new timbers, flooring, lacquers, stones and 250 fabrics, all of which are sourced globally.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300692/image/large-1f82a755cd34920bc7a886a85988e91b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300692">We manage the costs, ensuring that we meet budget targets because there is a difference between the cost price and sale price, which has to align. It’s quite challenging but rewarding, and it ensures the interiors resonate with buyers worldwide – from the UK to Asia to America.When we began working with them, they wanted to redefine the ranges – the Predator, Manhattan, Yacht, and Ocean lines. We started from scratch, looking at the DNA of each line and the clients buying them. It was fascinating to see how each model serves different client needs. We helped them redefine each range with a clear identity, and that became the basis for each new design going forward.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/285706/image/large-7fef235c432aa6770f32260f642b5fe3.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/285706">We recently launched the all-new Ocean 156 at the Southampton Boat Show, which has been extremely popular. It’s a single-deck design with a flow-through main deck, creating a sense of openness. You can forget you’re on an 80-foot (about 24-metre) yacht; she feels much larger, with three decks, generous cabins, and flexible living areas. Working with a brand like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a>, that pushes boundaries, really makes design exciting.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/296265/image/large-11dce1bd61577128f391c25c71897004.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/296265">You’ve got some significant yachts in-build, including the 61.61-metre&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2013" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ARES Yachts (Company)">Ares Yachts</a>&nbsp;ketch&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12790" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Simena61.61m (202'2&quot;)ARES Yachts2025">Simena</a>. Are there any projects you’re especially looking forward to?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12790" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Simena61.61m (202'2&quot;)ARES Yachts2025">Simena</a> is particularly exciting, our first project with Ares and their first superyacht. She is progressing well and with her launch next year, she’ll become the studio’s largest yacht to date. We’ve also signed the third hull of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantiere delle Marche (CdM) (Company)">CdM</a>’s 49.9-metre Flexplorer series to owners who saw <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3834" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="King Benji46.7m (153'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2024">King Benji</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pink Shadow58.0m (190'3&quot;)Damen Yachting2023">Pink Shadow&nbsp;</a>and loved what we’d done, which is always exciting to see. From classical to contemporary yacht design: Discover Zijlstra Interiors onboard some of the worlds most prestigious yachts.

Today, the family-run business with a rare royal warrant of approval has evolved into a specialist refit yard able to take on technically demanding projects. A case in point is <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/853" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Emerald50.4m (165'4&quot;)Feadship1990">Emerald</a>, a 50.4-metre classic <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> approaching the end of a 15-month refit at the yard near Amsterdam.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/297730/image/large-25c67c7a5458ad6780bbfb8239c01341.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/297730">The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/853" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Emerald50.4m (165'4&quot;)Feadship1990">Emerald</a> story begins in 1990 when she was launched as Alfa Alfa, a 45.55-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> with the new ‘hard-edged’ exterior lines fashionable in the mid-’80s, a trend borrowed from the car design world. She changed hands and names several times before ending up in Malta as Legacy V. By the time the current owners came across her, she was looking a little tired and in need of a facelift to bring her up to modern standards. That process is now approaching completion at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/434" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Balk Shipyard (Company)">Balk Shipyard</a>. &nbsp;Although <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/853" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Emerald50.4m (165'4&quot;)Feadship1990">Emerald</a> is the first experience of ownership for her new owners, they have chartered extensively and had particularly enjoyed family time aboard 53-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/276" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mirage53.0m (173'11&quot;)Feadship1979">Mirage</a>, another <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> with the more classic lines of a decade earlier. She has an award-winning refitted interior by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/329" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Design Unlimited (Company)">Design Unlimited</a> and the UK-based studio was tasked with coming up with proposals to refresh their new acquisition inside and out.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/297737/image/large-bbd6bdb61f9ecad4da17faa15856e813.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/297737">“The owners wanted to combine the best features of yachts they had chartered, then wrap them within the signature <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> exterior,” says Marcus Raynor, lead designer at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/329" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Design Unlimited (Company)">Design Unlimited</a>. “They had a precise, family-oriented vision for the boat and extensive changes were proposed to modernise and improve the interior spaces for both guests and crew, and the exterior design went through an equally extensive process of styling evolution rather than revolution.”The next step was to find a yard to carry out the refit work and the tender went out to various companies. As the yacht was in Malta, the most obvious choice was somewhere in Italy or Turkey, but because the yacht had been built in in the Netherlands her owners eventually decided she should be refitted in her country of birth at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/434" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Balk Shipyard (Company)">Balk Shipyard</a>.“She arrived here with all the guest spaces completely stripped out and just a few loose wires and smoke detectors hanging down from the ceilings,” recalls Peter Lassche, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/434" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Balk Shipyard (Company)">Balk</a> project manager. “But before starting on the interior we had some major metalwork to do.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/297738/image/large-1e8e898f2b6229522bbdacbad24f7c22.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/297738">MAJOR METALWORKThe hotworks involved cutting off and lengthening the stern to make way for more comfortable stairs connecting the main deck and swim platform. The original steps on either side of the transom door into the now enlarged lazarette had been straight, narrow and somewhat steep; the new ones are wider and gently curved with shallower risers for more comfort and under the portside stairs is a telescopic passarelle. In addition, the extended cockpit provides more al fresco relaxation and dining space on main deck. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Mulder Design</a> was contracted to redraw the underwater lines in the stern.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/297863/image/large-e99cfed34812eb0379e8ea812359f930.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/297863">At some stage in the yacht’s history an <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1824" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Opacmare SpA (Company)">Opacmare</a> Transformer had been added by attaching it on top of the swim platform, an inelegant solution that hampered use of the deck space. The new stern meant it could be integrated flush into the platform for a much more attractive and practical result. The brow over the bridge windscreen was extended to offer more shade and the imposing radar mast was restyled to lend the yacht a sleeker profile.&nbsp;Also known as the boat deck because the guest tender is stored there, the upper deck was originally served by two cranes, which have been replaced by a single custom unit with a capacity of 3.5-tonnes. Built by LCW Lagendijk, a company more accustomed to supplying ships and offshore platforms vessels, it can extend 6.5 metres to facilitate tender operations on both sides of the yacht (an MOB tender and jet skis are stowed in the bow on main deck).&nbsp;GO WITH THE FLOWA new addition is a spiral staircase on the starboard to the main deck aft. This much improves circulation for both guests and crew as the only prior outside access was from side-deck stairs amidships.&nbsp;The sky lounge on the upper deck was extended aft in line with the foot of the exterior stairs to the sundeck, and the traditional hinged doors onto the open aft deck were replaced with a modern, sliding glass doors that open up the room to the exterior. A new dining table for a full compliment of guests and sofa seating was added in the stern. Once the tender is in the water, the boat deck is likely to be the hub of family life on board.To maintain the yacht’s balanced lines and provide a shady overhang on the deck below, the sundeck was also extended aft. Here again the arrangement was completely modernised to make way for a custom-built, 6,500-litre capacity Aquademi hot tub flanked by sunpads on a raised level overlooking the foredeck, as well as a wet bar and new sofa seating.&nbsp;The rest of the metalwork was more a question of taking away material than adding it. The window mullions in the master suite on the main deck forward, for example, are now slimmer to make way for larger windows and the fashion plates were reduced in size to allow more light into the main salon and better views outboard. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/297864/image/large-5169510b06e6ac1bd83f977a25fb0be1.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/297864">MOTION CONTROLTo improve comfort at anchor, the old hydraulic stabilisers were replaced with electric <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5020" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Quantum Marine Stabilizers (Company)">Quantum</a> XT extendable fins to increase the effective fin area and improve zero-speed stabilisation. The naval architects at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Mulder Design</a> advised on the positioning and installing of the three-metre long fins– much larger than the originals – that are required by Class to have a separate watertight box or cofferdam and thicker steel plating surrounding the entry points into the hull.&nbsp;“That meant cutting two huge holes in the hull and building reinforcements into the engine room and the fuel tanks under the guest cabins,” says Lassche. “These are very tight spaces because the engine room is full of machinery that you have to try and work around.” &nbsp;Apart from removing a couple of opening portholes in the hull (which shouldn’t have been there under Flag rules) and adding new AC chiller units, no major work was done in the engine room, where the original twin 770-hp GM <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1497" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Detroit Diesel (Company)">Detroit Diesels</a> were overhauled but remain in place. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/297865/image/large-de0d04464a41ffaee915b98fc79a5cd8.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/297865">BACK TO BASICSIt was not just the interior décor and furniture that were redesigned and rebuilt; the layout also underwent a dramatic transformation, which meant ripping out and replacing wiring, piping, AC ducting, and much more. &nbsp;“We basically took her back to a bare shell and started again,” says Lassche.The new materials and colour palette based on dark wenge veneer, light-toned soft furnishings and natural stone varieties resulted from a visit by the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/329" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Design Unlimited (Company)">Design Unlimited</a> team to the owners’ residence in London to align their interior concept with the family’s feel for finishes and style.“We combined face-to-face collaboration and physical sample testing with the latest CAD and visualisation software to finalise the interior design package, says Raynor. “The result is a stylish mix of sophisticated opulence and serene informality that will also appeal to a wide charter market.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/297867/image/large-925a102e847d1daa5e3b0dc51d63fe5b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/297867">Apart from the new décor and bathroom fittings, adding vanity desks and increasing storage, the guest accommodation on the lower deck aft of the engine room (two double and two twin single cabins with sliding beds) is one of few guest areas that remained more or less intact. Elsewhere the owners requested a VIP cabin in addition to the master stateroom on the main deck forward – quite a challenge on a yacht the size of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/853" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Emerald50.4m (165'4&quot;)Feadship1990">Emerald</a> built at a time when optimising space was not the priority it is today. &nbsp;The first step was to do away with the existing VIP cabin on the lower deck forward of the engine room. This had the advantage of increasing the size of the crew quarters by about 30 percent, allowing for a larger crew mess, a dedicated laundry room, a chief engineer’s cabin, and additional refrigerated storage. The crew accommodation was in good condition, so the décor was refurbished rather than replaced and the new additions finished in the same style. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/297868/image/large-8bc8b8b09f9ac083dc5b930b360e615d.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/297868">TAKE THE STAIRSRelocating the VIP to the main deck was more complex. The old yacht had no fewer than four staircases for guest and crew use arranged around the galley amidships. This was clearly inefficient. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/329" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Design Unlimited (Company)">Design Unlimited</a> cleverly reduced the number of staircases to two, improving circulation flow in the process while maintaining privacy for guests, but also creating a modern and user-friendly galley with a large pantry that did not exist before. It also freed up floor space, which in addition to shifting the forward bulkhead in the master stateroom 800mm forward and repositioning the ensuite bathroom, provided just enough room for a comfortable VIP cabin.&nbsp;“The rearrangement is a win-win on a number of levels,” says Raynor. “It does away with the rather poky VIP on the lower deck, increases crew comfort, reduces the number of staircases, improves the galley layout, and introduces two nicely proportioned suites on main deck where before there was only one.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/297869/image/large-b2a71888c04253c1d9048a166bc6b83c.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/297869">The new staircase arrangement means a stairs emerges from under the observation sofa directly into the wheelhouse. The navigation and communication electronics on the bridge were completely upgraded and a new Böning control and monitoring system installed by integrators <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7372" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Van Der Leun (Company)">Royal Van der Leun</a>, along with new wing stations.&nbsp;“The challenge here was fitting a lot of new hardware and cabling into a console designed for the much simpler systems of 30 years ago, while still maintaining the access space for someone to be able to crawl inside if something needs fixing,” says Lassche.The captain’s cabin was flipped to the starboard side with direct access from the wheelhouse. This created space on the port side for a ship’s office/radio room and a servery area dressed as a guest space where guests can help themselves to a cool drink, or it can be manned by crew if required.In the main saloon the staircase to the lower deck cabins was rotated 90 degrees &nbsp;anticlockwise so the entrance was from the starboard side rather than the middle of the room. This increased the available floor space in the lounge for free-standing furniture. Feature partitions introduced between the saloon and the forward dining room provide a degree of separation and easily accessible storage for tableware. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/297866/image/large-cf04a2b284925dc0aaa50e14ef783d7a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/297866">PICTURE POSTCARDThanks to the sympathetic touch of the designers and specialist experience of the shipyard, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/853" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Emerald50.4m (165'4&quot;)Feadship1990">Emerald</a> is a better looking <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> than when she first hit the water more than 30 years ago – by no means a foregone conclusion when refitting classic yachts. Her new interior, built and installed by Metalika in Slovenia, is fresh and contemporary yet in keeping with the timeless exterior styling, and her layout is vastly more conducive to modern family life afloat and the expectations of eventual charter clients. Add a glossy Jotun topcoat in Orion Green and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/853" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Emerald50.4m (165'4&quot;)Feadship1990">Emerald</a> is a picture postcard example of how an extensive yet sensitive refit can give an old yacht a new lease of life.

Ensuring the studio continues to grow and thrive is another challenge in itself, one that Mark Tucker, founder and managing director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/329" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Design Unlimited (Company)">Design Unlimited</a> has relished over the past 18 years. There are certain boats stand out to me, but all of our customers have amazing yachts. Some of our earliest boats like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1163" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Visione44.84m (147'1&quot;)Baltic Yachts2002">Visione</a>, a Baltic 147' that was the biggest composite sloop at the time, comes to mind. She was built 18 years ago, but the owner still owns it and is still sailing it, which is great! Other milestone boats I’d say would be <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3572" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shemara64.68m (212'2&quot;)Vosper Thornycroft1938">Shemara</a>, a beautiful, classic gentleman’s motor yacht. We just completed another one which is named Alyssa, for a very different market sector of the world. Then you get your Pink Gin’s, Pink Gin V, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4899" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pink Gin VI53.7m (176'2&quot;)Baltic Yachts2017">Pink Gin VI&nbsp;</a>- an evolution of a famous name. She is a unique boat, with a very, very different feeling. We designed three yachts for that particular customer, and we got to know him and his taste very well.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/25866/image/large-ef9a0049518d1f4eac843da75d306643.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/25866"> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/329" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Design Unlimited (Company)">Design Unlimited</a>&nbsp;works on both custom superyachts as well as production series. Do you have a personal preference when it comes to design?I get rewards which are both similar and different from both. Custom work is very rewarding in terms of its status in the industry, the feeling you have once you have achieved a new, unique design. However, production design is also very important regarding what you can bring into the market, such as responsible design, and how it reflects on other yards. We do a lot of production work with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic</a>, Hansa Group and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4188" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Windy Boats AS (Company)">Windy</a> and we are proud that we have good relationships with those companies. Although it’s a different section of the market than custom superyachts and can be quite challenging at times because you have a number of cost-control measure, design and USP to keep in mind, these things make it quite interesting as well. At the end of the day, if you see someone having a great time on one of your boats - custom or production - it's the same. The owners get the same pleasure across the board.Can you tell us a bit more about some of your recent projects - such as the new aluminium model for&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a>&nbsp;&amp;&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/429" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ICON Yachts (Company)">Icon</a>?Well, we just started working with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a> on the Icon product line, and that is a very big step for them. However, our work with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a> is more of a behind-the-scenes collaboration - any model we create is 100% a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a> yacht. We previously worked with them for several years, up until 2008, and developed 12 of the former models, so it is nice that they have come back to us to work on this new range. We are working on a few other projects with them, but I can't say anymore I am afraid!We are also working on another new, very exciting range of explorer yachts which will be announced in <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boot Düsseldorf - 2019">BOOT - Dusseldorf</a> - it is a very recent signing, so I can't share any more on that either!<img src="/uploads/store/photo/21041/image/large-5e4caa71126d7fc0b7de1be453192f56.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/21041">Where do you look for inspiration when working on a new yacht design?&nbsp;We look at everything for inspiration - including yachting! The yacht design industry is an amazing industry to follow, full of incredible designers and you should always respect that. While <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/329" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Design Unlimited (Company)">Design Unlimited</a> may not be the oldest design studio, I think it's essential to learn from what some of our peers have done over the years. We also find inspiration from all sorts of other areas - the world is a big place. Think art, colour, seasons, textures, architecture - they all come into the equation. Our team is continuously looking and observing what is happening in the world and that's easier to keep track of today thanks to the internet and tools like Pinterest.&nbsp;I do rely on our team for inspiration as well. I am very much a team believer, and I feel that working with other people and listening to them helps me come up with new ideas.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/22696/image/large-13d90b0100c7323777691d6ce347c373.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/22696">How would you describe yourself and the design team at&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/329" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Design Unlimited (Company)">Design Unlimited</a>?I am a team player. I like working with people and think we have quite a nice, mixed team. It's invigorating working with young people and the fact we can give them a chance to work on amazing projects is great. I like to think that we promote diversity in our designs for our customers - if you look at our projects and our range of boats, there is no stereotypical, hit-studio style. I'd never force my own personal ideas onto a project - our team is involved in all projects, &nbsp;whether it be custom or production. I think it is good that there is more than one person behind a design because young people have great ideas - they haven’t got the clutter that some of us oldies have got, they see things differently sometimes. And also it's just really good fun working with them. We just hired a new lad, right out of university and he has brought a fresh injection to the studio, new ideas, new ways of doing things.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/45612/image/large-54834dd693c9431ddecab68b38835961.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45612">Do you think that there is sufficient innovation in yacht design?I would say there is - especially among some of the more trendier styles, such as explorer yacht. While everyone has their own opinion on what an explorer is or isn't - a true explorer, in my opinion, is one which helps develop responsible systems. However, trying to put all these newer systems together in a whole package can be difficult. We are working on a new range of explorer yachts at the moment, they are not superyachts, but they are absolutely true explorer yachts, and the whole ethos is started from scratch, with a new platform. We only signed the contract a few weeks ago, but after the briefing, the entire team went 'wow'. There was a buzz going around the studio, and everyone was going on about it - it is sure to turn a few heads.&nbsp;How do you foresee the superyacht industry evolving?The superyacht industry is small, with a lot of people in it. It’s a matter of can it and will it sustain itself, especially as more and more people come into it.&nbsp;Historically we are not a very green industry either. I think that we would all like to be more responsible and conscious, but it has to come from so many different aspects - starting with the engines, the main oil burner. There is much responsibility across the board, but not all clients are willing to pay the extra costs linked to hybrid systems. Fortunately, there are owners out there who are looking at the explorer platform with the idea to do something more green. Overall I think change is afoot, I think that the next generation that comes along will push harder in certain areas, I think that is inevitable. With the company established in 2000, the last 17 years has seen Design Unlimited’s portfolio shine, with notable projects including the 64.68-metre Shemara, 36.8-metre Bliss, 53-metre Mirage and 46.2-metres Pink Gin V. With Pink Gin VI currently under construction at Baltic Yachts, here Roxanne Hughes of Breed Media sits down with founder of the design studio Design Unlimited, Mark Tucker, for a behind-the-scenes look at the studio.

You established the Design Unlimited studio in 2000. Tell us a little about your history and what lead you to establish your own design studio.

I have always had a passion for boats and for the sea. I started sailing at an early age, crewing for my dad’s friend in an Albacore dinghy before moving on to have my own Mirror dinghy, the first in a very long line of dinghies and boats. My interest in sailing meant that after studying industrial design at Cardiff, I joined Camper &amp; Nicholson’s Yachts to work in the design office of their shipyard in Gosport. The experience gained at Campers has proven to be invaluable over the years - it gave me a secure technical knowledge of what is actually feasible in terms of build, as well as a great insight into construction methods and joinery.

I then joined Ken Freivokh Design where I worked my way up to becoming a partner before deciding in 2000 that, with 14 years of experience under my belt, the time was right for me and my wife Julie to branch out on our own and Design Unlimited was born. At the beginning of this year, we moved to new premises. The new studio has given us much more space, allowing for expansion and better facilities for welcoming our clients.

What are some of the major milestones over the past 17 years of business?

One of our early projects was Visione which, at the time, was the world’s largest carbon sloop - a great coup for a young studio. This came about through my connection with Jim Pugh from US naval architects, Reichel Pugh and was the start of what has been a very long and productive relationship with Baltic Yachts in Finland. The relationship with Baltic Yachts, formed during our work on Visione, was pivotal in securing the contract for the design of Pink Gin V and forging a fantastic relationship with the owner and his team.

Our work for Sunseeker International was another milestone for the studio. During our early days, we carried out the interior design for an 86’ Sunseeker model which proved popular with their owners and we were then approached by the company to redesign the interiors for their entire range over the period 2006 to 2011; a total of 15 models.

The refit of Shemara was another great project for our studio. This beautiful gentleman’s motor yacht was completely rebuilt to give her a new lease of life and again, we formed a strong bond with the team. The multi-award winning and aptly named WinWin was also a high point for us.

The refit of Mirage was another significant project on our evolutionary ladder. We had previously designed the refit for this yacht when she was Elisabeth F but a contact with the new owner, for whom we had done some interior work on his race boat, saw us commence what turned into a very large refit carried out over three consecutive winter seasons whilst the owners used the yacht during each summer. All interior areas were completely refitted and modernised utilising a cool, contemporary look with Scandinavian touches. Mirage was awarded Refit of the Year at the World Superyacht Awards in 2016.

In numerical terms we have completed 30 custom superyacht projects, 28 production motor yachts and over 20 production sailing yacht designs, and are grateful to our clients for giving us the opportunity to work on such amazing projects.

The next yacht to launch that you’ve worked on will be Pink Gin VI - built by Baltic Yachts. Once launched, she’ll be the largest carbon-fibre sloop in the world. How did that project come about? What are some of the main rewards and challenges when it comes to the Pink Gin VI project?

As mentioned above our initial contact with the Pink Gin team came about through the design of the owner’s previous yacht, the beautiful Pink Gin V. The owner was so delighted with this yacht that he was determined to have the same team working on his new project. Initially, work started on Pink Gin VI in 2012 but the project was put on hold before restarting in earnest in 2014. The launch this summer will be the result of three years’ intense work - the results will be truly remarkable and original. Whilst the details of the project are still under wraps, there have been some incredible challenges associated with building an innovative composite yacht.

Pink Gin VI will feature two hull doors, a first for a carbon sailing yacht, and her closely-guarded interior design will be revealed to all at Monaco Yacht Show in September. Our interior decorator, Nicola Brook, has worked very closely with the owner and her attention to detail means that every last aspect of this amazing project has been carefully considered.

You design for both production and full-custom superyachts. Does your work in each field help the other?

We are fortunate that we have been flexible enough in our outlook to work in both fields. My own sailing experience has meant that I really enjoy the demands of production yacht work, having a smaller envelope into which to fit a functional interior is a challenge which excites me, as is the idea of doing something new in this field. Also, that production yachts have a much shorter timescale for completion means that the results of production work are seen far more quickly.

This discipline definitely helps with the custom superyacht design, although it's nice to use the custom work as an opportunity to give one’s imagination (and often the budget!) more free rein. Conversely, our work on custom superyachts also helps us to push the boundaries of the production yacht world and we have worked with many of our superyacht suppliers to help them develop and refine some of their products for use in the wider production sector of the market.

Tell us what is on your drawing boards at the moment, and what we can expect to see in the future.

We are currently working on some pretty exciting and diverse projects. This year we have a 78’ motor yacht launching from Baltic Yachts, an unusual step for this predominantly sailing yacht builder - the client being an experienced sailing yacht owner - and it'll feature a very clean and modern interior with many interesting touches. We are also working on the refit of a 49.9m gentleman’s motor yacht which will be launched in 2018, we have a range of exciting catamaran projects underway at McConaghy, and a 102’ sailing yacht underway in Turkey. We have also been working on designs for a range of motor yachts for Baltic - a new venture for them, a range of production motor yachts building in China, a 46-metre trimaran and we have a few other things up our sleeves as well!

Winners of the 2016 World Superyacht Awards announced

In 2012 STP Shipyard Palma started the first phase of the refit of superyacht Mirage. Each Winter marked the beginning of a new 7 month refit period of refit, and the yard just completed the third phase of the refit.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155054/image/large-75ec6f6c367151ab0e4b4e4df5fd2422.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155054">Mirage has gone through a complete remodeling with a new interior, crew area, housing, communications mast, the bridge, the engine room, and various exterior paint jobs.In the first phase of the refit, the sky lounge was redesigned, as was the crew area and the main salon area as well as a partial replacement of the electrical system from 110V to 240V.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155055/image/large-36f1e1d32bc3c96037fb392aa2481ac4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155055">In the second winter, the yacht was rewired, and Ideaworks installed a new audiovisual system and communication system; Oldenburger substituted the lower deck guest cabins, bathrooms, main deck and the cabin for VIP guests and the main cabin. The engine room was renovated, generators were rebuild, and stabilizers, pipes and systems were changed. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155056/image/large-c8d7db5ed1cf15b90052b462c61144d2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155056">The third phase began in September of 2014, and included the renovation of the bridge, the captain's cabin, the radio room, the renovation of the communications mast, full paint job, the installation of new engines, jacuzzi and bow thruster.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155057/image/large-d1c287baacee2724ae707cafe502755f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155057"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155058/image/large-6910e2e5dff21c6404305fff3bcbc4e9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155058">Paul Madeley, the refit Project Manager commented "It is a renewal of 90% of the boat" has been changed and renovated the entire interior, the mechanical part, as well as electrical and hydraulic; "Probably one of the most important refits that have been carried out at the premises of STP in recent years."<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155059/image/large-86b857bf80fdfdf3afd0ec6b49214051.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155059">Mirage was originally launched as Daria by Feadship in 1979. Eight years ago she was lengthened by 5 meters, from 48 to its current 53 meters. This classic Feadship was built at the Dutch company’s Royal Van Lent facilities in 1980, and was commissioned along with the 51.25 metre Abu Al Abyadh by a client in Abu Dhabi. The commission's came at a time when Feadship’s presence in the Middle East was escalating, marked by the successes of the 64.64 metre Al Riyadh and the 48 metre Daria.Featuring naval architecture and exterior design by De Voogt Naval Architects, the steel and aluminium vessel is powered by twin MTU 12V652 1,570 hp engines. Superyacht Mirage introduces Yacht Carbon Offset

During the Antibes Yacht Show last week I was invited by Hill Robinson to have lunch onboard superyacht Elisabeth F. The luxury motor yacht was just anchored off the beautiful old town of Antibes and with one of the large tenders we were brought to the yacht where the crew was waiting for us. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/138989/image/large-c8c6573db7b14c8bdb6dafc250c8a8eb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/138897">We were shown around the yacht by David Price of Hill Robinson. The interior has a very warm and relaxed atmosphere throughout, but one of the greatest features of Elisabeth F are her exterior deck spaces. The large main aft deck features a large dining table in the shade and several sun loungers to enjoy a coffee in the morning or a cocktail in the afternoon. On the large upper aft deck there is plenty of space for entertaining large groups of guests and on the sun deck there is even more space for relaxation with a Jacuzzi and gym equipment. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/138990/image/large-7a32fe79c86d0596d1c46389081eb8cd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/138990">We had lunch on the aft deck which started with pan fried scallops, curried cauliflower puree &amp; deep fried capers. Captain Simon Johnson joined us for lunch and told us about the impressive refit the yacht had underwent. Originally built by Feadship Koninklijke De Vries in 1979, Elisabeth F was completely refitted in 2006/2007 by the Pendennis shipyard in the United Kingdom. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/138991/image/large-1d0f30fc3b35ba06b4cc4f2305df730d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/138991">Whilst captain Simon was sharing stories about the refit, we were served a delightful main course; local sea bass, spring greens, roasted red pepper &amp; star anis coulis. During her refit Elisabeth F went through a complete transformation. She was lengthened, the main saloon, VIP cabin, master suite and bridge deck saloon were completely refurbished, and the six lower deck cabins were partly refurbished. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/138992/image/large-525beb502d5cc550043029e7acb91db3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/138992">For desert, the chef surprised us with a coconut panna cotta with pineapple salsa. Superyacht Elisabeth F is part of the growing charter management fleet of Hill Robinson. In 2009 she had an extensive refit, and today she looks as new. Elisabeth F is available for charters through Hill Robinson in Antibes, and her she offers accommodation for up to 12 charter guests in 7 spacious cabins. Her interior features teak, subtle cream fabrics and contemporary furnishings. Superyacht Elisabeth F anchored off Antibes

For the second year running sales at Pendennis’ for their refit services have grown. With M/Y <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/276">Avante</a> and M/Y Le Reina Del Mar currently in residence in the inner dry dock the company has expanded its capacity again by offering temperature controlled bubble tents as a viable alternative. This is the first time that this tried and tested technology has been used in this way by the Falmouth based Yacht builder and repairer. Working with Spar Craft from Palma, Pendennis has had M/Y Kiring partially tented in the outer 75m dry dock for a hull re-paint and M/Y <a href="http://www.superyachttimes.com/yachts/details/458/">Alta</a> , S/Y Naos and S/Y Zephyr of Falmouth fully tented on hard standing. The success of the initial batch means that a further tent is planned for up coming work on another 50m Motor Yacht.
