In 1971, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a> first opened its doors in Amstelveen, the Netherlands. Over the past 50 years, the naval architecture and design company has championed Dutch Maritime heritage, developing award-winning naval architecture and engineering for some of the world’s most exciting superyacht projects.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/194343/image/large-90b094188b8ee84abb8f813a5390e84f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/194343">“To mark 50 years operating in an industry that has undergone so much change is truly remarkable.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. Originally built in 1979 by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> with exterior design and engineering by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA</a>. 50 Years of Diana Yacht Design

More than 70 superyachts bearing the Diana name have set sail over the past 50 years. SYT marks the milestone.

Although it might not be the most glamorous or well publicised of careers in the industry, there are few people more integral to the successful day-to-day functioning of any superyacht than a marine engineer.What does the job entail? In a nutshell, marine engineers design the yacht’s construction details, technical spaces and systems (including engine rooms, emergency generator rooms and so on) to ensure the smooth daily operation of the vessel and that any future maintenance can be carried out as easily as possible. In our final instalment of the ‘Day In the Life’ series, we discover the ins and outs of life as a marine engineer from those who know it best: Lars de Smit (Marine Engineer), Yoeri van Ommen (Naval Architect) and Jerry Lakeman (Marine Engineer &amp; Financial Director) from the Dutch studio <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design.</a> <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181768/image/large-c9a1e114fccf2e6df77c7624c9ed6833.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181768"> What are the primary differences between the role of a naval architect and a marine engineer?Lars: A marine engineer mainly takes care of the mechanical and technical side of the yachts, whereas a naval architect concerns themselves with stability and sailing characteristics. As marine engineers, we focus on special features such as hull doors, tender garages and so on, as well as all of the different systems on board that make the yacht work. This can include, for example, the propulsion and fuel systems, as well as the toilets and showers on board.Yoeri:&nbsp;In our office, there is a thin line differentiating the job description of a Naval Architect and a Marine Engineer. At<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">&nbsp;Diana Yacht Design,&nbsp;</a>both naval architects and marine engineers work closely together on producing construction drawings: this is part of our core business. To make these drawings complete, we add in our specialisations, including the construction details of hull doors, piping systems and so on, to these drawings. Working together in this way, we can create the blueprints to build amazing yachts. Describe your typical working day Lars: A typical working day doesn’t exist for me. During the course of a project, we keep ourselves busy with numerous different things. For example, I can be working on strength calculations on one day, mechanical systems on the other and constructing features on the next. This is part of why I like being a marine engineer: we have very varied workdays.&nbsp; <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181769/image/large-d5789c7c96e2316b40d137886b6602cb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181769"> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5675" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Soprano38.25m (125'6&quot;)Hakvoort Shipyard2017">Soprano</a>&nbsp;by Diana Yacht Design What are the different challenges you face when constructing/engineering a yacht from different materials?Yoeri: When you create a construction plan for a yacht, the building material is always important. A material like steel or aluminium can be welded, meaning that all sorts of shapes can be used, but when you construct a yacht out of wood, you use glue and bolted connections, so different building techniques are required. When you design a construction plan for a yacht made of wood, you need to take the limits of shapes and connection details into account. Lars: Working with different materials is really interesting to do because you can exploit all of the strengths of the different materials out there. The challenge is combining these materials. For example, combining steel and aluminium causes corrosion and this is especially true for marine applications. Besides strengths, materials also have weaknesses. Engineering in such a way that negates the weaknesses of materials is a really interesting challenge.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181772/image/large-edc8d8e2587b47a98f2a252b58533c62.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181772">Wood construction by&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a> How would you design the ultimate engine room?Jerry:&nbsp;That is a good question! First, I would start off by adding in two extra metres of space to the engine room, then… Unfortunately, that is not how it works. In our experience, most owners like to have more space in the guest quarters than in the engine room. So we always design the engine room in the best possible way with easy access to all the equipment for straightforward maintenance and functionality. We try to avoid hiding pumps under the floor plates ­­­­­­­­– although it makes the engine room look nicer, it also makes maintenance and service harder.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181767/image/large-fdb0127fbe15303aef54c4b6aa93d38c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181767"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4975" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Robbie Bobby 33.39m (109'7&quot;)Lynx Yachts2013">Robbie Bobby</a>&nbsp;engine room by&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a> Lars:&nbsp;The ultimate engine room for me would be a very technical but clean and organized space. Personally, I like the look of exposed technical systems. Organising all of the pipes and systems in such a manner that it’s neat looking is every engineer’s dream. Instead of hiding the systems and pipes, I would like to expose as much as is technically possible by using windows in order to see all of the nice details and systems that are placed within the engine room. Describe how you work with the shipyard, naval architects and owners on a projectYoeri: During a project, I have daily contact with the project manager of the shipyard. We mostly act as the naval architect in the projects, so we have a close relationship with all of the involved parties. We make concepts in collaboration with the shipyard which we then discuss with the owners. When the owners like the concept, we can fully engineer it with all of the aspects that are important for the designs. This way of working gives the owners a lot of control and this pushes me to be better in what I do. Owners’ wishes are sometimes hard to realize but it’s very cool when you can look back and be proud of the job we got done as a team.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/40907/image/large-7983e5a8d15d0ce2e8330351adea061f.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/40907">What have been the most challenging moments you have come across whilst working on projects?Jerry:&nbsp;Every project comes with its own issues. Our well-known rebuild project, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/936" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Legend77.4m (253'11&quot;)IHC Verschure1974">Legend&nbsp;</a>certainly presented us with plenty! We know from our experience that the old construction drawings of a yacht mostly differ from how the construction ends up going on board. Generally, in the past, construction drawings were not as accurate as now, the yard often changed the construction without updating the drawings. To avoid this happening with<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/936" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Legend77.4m (253'11&quot;)IHC Verschure1974">&nbsp;Legend</a>, we had to make a complete 3D scan. With this scan, we could determine the exact shape of the boat, allowing us to start modelling new components and to determine the parts which needed modifications according to our new design drawings. Making the complete yacht strong enough is challenging, but using <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design’s&nbsp;</a>years of experience in combination with computer simulations (FEM simulations), we always manage to realize a strong yacht. Tell us about some of your favourite projects Yoeri:&nbsp;I was involved in a project to fit a helideck to a yacht in Australia. This yacht was built in the US. While we are used to working with the metric system, all the drawings for this project were imperial. This resulted in some extra challenges. Adding a helideck to a yacht has a large impact on the ship’s centre of gravity, so to be sure that the ship still fulfilled all of the stability criteria, we had to perform an inclination test in Australia. So together with the shipyard and electrical company, we decided to install an ESI (Energy Storage Inverter) system, with lithium-ion batteries. The ESI can supply electrical energy, or store this energy, so that it can be used more efficiently. The main benefit of the system in combination with smaller generators is lower soot emissions. As an added bonus, it also enables all-night electrical power without generators needing to be used. Who isn’t intrigued by the life of a superyacht designer? Of all of the industry’s careers, that of the superyacht exterior designer must rank amongst the most fascinating and mysterious out there. And demanding too: with a barrage of new concepts being released every year by design studios, it is a competitive landscape for any designer looking to make their mark on a saturated market. Plus, for those of us outside the superyacht design sphere, the process of exactly how an exterior design comes together from sketch to concept (as well as what happens next if a client is keen to build the boat), is shrouded in mystery. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/172686/image/large-83d240b9fee08c40632ab7ee7c5c81d4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/172686">To satisfy our curiosity about the day-to-day life of a superyacht designer, we speak to Hans-Maarten Bais, Creative Director and Casper Marelis, Naval Architect and Designer from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design.</a> How did you first venture into superyacht design?Casper: I always knew I had to do something with boats, so I studied Naval Architecture. (Company)">&nbsp;Diana Yacht Design</a> and stayed there to start my career. (Company)">&nbsp;DIANA</a> I got the opportunity to thoroughly explore superyacht design. &nbsp;Hans-Maarten: My family were all fishermen and I was crazy about everything that floats. I was always drawing - mostly fishing boats - so choosing to study Naval Architecture was the only thing for me to do. During my studies I was introduced to the yachting world which I never knew existed before! I was lucky to do my internship at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>, as in the mid 1990s lots of yards and design offices were having a hard time. I really liked it and never left the company. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA</a> has already existed for 50 years and my two partners and I have been running the company the last 14 years.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/172957/image/large-c95d5195d198ecae0712d9f5d515a08a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/172957">Tell me what a typical day in your job looks like.Casper:&nbsp;There are days which involve the 3D modelling of a new yacht and examining every small detail of its design. On other days a potential client will call and ask if it is possible to look into a design and create a first profile sketch to see if it works. But the best days involve presenting and discussing a design with the client and seeing their first reaction.&nbsp;Hans-Maarten: Besides running the company, I’m also the creative director. At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA,</a> our management team is very hands-on. I also work on projects and am responsible for most of the hull modelling work. So there is no such thing as a typical day. One day I’m writing emails for most of the day, on another day I might be modelling the hull of a new project or brainstorming with the team about marketing. I could also be taking a plane and going to meet potential clients, talking about new designs or overseeing a project being built in another country.&nbsp; What are your favourite elements of your role as a designer?Hans-Maarten: The thrill of starting from scratch. It all starts with a blank sheet of paper. After the design and a build period of, let’s say three years, there is a beautiful yacht in the water which is ready to carry her owners to even the most remote places in the world. Motor yacht&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Odyssey44.4m (145'8&quot;)Royal Denship A/S2007">Amante&nbsp;</a>(now Odyssey)&nbsp;was my first design which was built and I felt extremely proud when she was finished. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1208" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pamela V44.9m (147'4&quot;)Hakvoort Shipyard2011">Pamela V&nbsp;</a>was really nice, as the client contacted us directly and was very involved during the whole build. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/936" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Legend77.4m (253'11&quot;)IHC Verschure1974">Legend</a> was great as it was an adventure to do the rebuild with only limited time available, and there was an additional challenge to completing the project since her documentation was destroyed in a fire. But what about the nitty-gritty of concept development? To discover more about how a superyacht concept is developed from a blank sheet of paper to the final renders, we caught up with Nick Hoedjes, Industrial Design Engineering trainee at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>, who has devised a brand new superyacht concept which he completed during lockdown: the 46-metre Zenith. Talk me through the inspiration behind ZenithI wanted to create a yacht focused on the outdoors for a young client with a very active lifestyle. One of the yachts that inspired me was the 77-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship&nbsp;</a>motor yacht<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6300" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pi77.25m (253'5&quot;)Feadship2019">&nbsp;Pi</a> because of her striking design in combination with her curved glass superstructure. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/172684/image/large-48d6c5ed1ca7b1602bc65fc4e4185624.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/172684">There are many different stages to getting a concept from the initial sketch to the final renders. What were the main changes you had to make along the way as the project developed?&nbsp;One of the main challenges was incorporating all of the different lifestyle elements into a 46-metre yacht. Some of the innovations have not been seen on a yacht of this size before. Another major challenge was getting the gross tonnage beneath 499GT, as this was one of the requirements I was given for my design. This resulted in an efficient layout, but with plenty of features still on board. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/172960/image/large-f0fcb7916d5cdf1fbc1f3359b10ed116.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/172960"> How did you imagine the client for Zenith?In my research prior to the design phase, I defined a new type of superyacht owner, as I found that owners are getting younger and have a more active lifestyle. This resulted in me incorporating various amenities into my concept, like the swimming pool, swim platform, sauna and winter garden gym.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/172683/image/large-698cc8786373df21b54dacf30d5ecfc2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/172683">What are the standout features which make Zenith unique?&nbsp;We wanted to create a yacht with a powerful exterior design ready for the future. Her sharp exterior lines give her an extraordinary appearance. Her superstructure is relatively small and positioned forward. This positioning enhances the space on the aft decks. While part of her superstructure is able to open up with the winter garden, it is possible to create even more deck space.&nbsp;One of the unique features on board has to be the swimming pool. Located on the aft main deck in the side of the hull, it truly is one of a kind. Two of the sides are completely made of glass, offering incredible views from the pool both above and underwater. The elegant beach area on the lower deck features a large extendable swim platform and is the ideal place for afternoons spent enjoying the open sea<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/172688/image/large-75f6503094ecb6ea1e4cf769ca2cd17a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/172688">What would be the main challenges of building Zenith?At the start of developing the concept, I set a goal that you would be able to produce this yacht right away, which is why I used existing techniques and solutions in the design. One of the challenges in the building process would be the tank layout to keep her levelled, since the swimming pool is situated on the side of the yacht and the large glass panels might also prove to be a challenge.&nbsp; What would the process be if a client wanted to build Zenith?&nbsp;Of course, we would be very proud if Zenith were to be built. We would help the client to find a shipyard and to put together a team that really understands the wishes and needs of the client. From sketch to concept: A day in the life of a superyacht exterior designer 

A topic which is increasingly on the mind of the modern superyacht owner is that of fuel efficiency. Of course, for a new owner looking to commission a new-build yacht, this is something which can be factored into the choice of propulsion system used to power the boat, but what can be done for owners of existing boats who are keen to achieve maximum fuel efficiency and don’t wish to go through the expense of replacing their existing engines? Speaking to the experts from the Dutch naval architecture and design studio, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design,</a> we learn about the various tweaks and tricks out there for maximising fuel efficiency, thus making your yacht more attractive for resale, representing considerable cost savings, and, of course, helping to save the planet along the way.&nbsp; 1. Add a bulbous bowFirstly, adding a bulbous bow to your vessel (a protruding bulb at the front of the boat just below the waterline) can save fuel for the rest of your boat’s life. This works by reducing the drag and wave-making resistance on your yacht, thus increasing its efficiency in the water and saving fuel as a consequence. If you do decide to go for this ‘nose job’ for your superyacht, bear in mind that bulbous bows come in a range of shapes and sizes and can be tailored to suit your yacht’s size and shape. In addition, if you extend the boat during a refit, that will also boost your vessel’s efficiency: a longer waterline creates speed, and so you will use less fuel travelling at the same speed. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/56399/image/large-d654e83640ab6845f918a013003270e2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/56399">2. Add a trim wedge&nbsp;Another easy modification which you can undertake is to add a trim wedge at the stern of your yacht. The purpose of a trim wedge is to create vertical lift by directing the water flow downwards while the boat moves through the water at higher speeds rather than letting it sink at the stern. This enables the vessel to travel more effectively at top speeds, thus increasing the yacht’s fuel efficiency. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/94819/image/large-5cc4e2576885061557368cb2a3627c2d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/94819">3. Harness battery technology&nbsp;If your boat is going in for a refit, one excellent way to increase the fuel efficiency of your yacht is to install a battery pack. If you experience a power peak - a request for a lot of power in a very short time - you can use the energy stored in the batteries to fulfil that peak rather than using a generator, thus reducing the amount of fuel burned. This technique is called “peak-shaving” and is also increasingly used on commercial vessels which experience peaks and troughs in power usage, like tugs. Owners can also enjoy numerous other benefits from making the most of battery technology. Picture the scene: you arrive at a secluded bay in Greece, turn off the generator and can run off of your batteries for hours with your lights and air conditioning still working, undisturbed by the sound of a generator, thus creating a far more relaxing (and environmentally friendly) experience on board. As<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">&nbsp;Diana Yacht Design</a> explains,&nbsp;“We already used this technology on the yacht Pamela V. We wanted to make this yacht as ‘green ‘ as possible and therefore the owner chose to install an energy storage inverter (ESI) on board.”&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/40930/image/large-2b14689aebf6de39553f636100531ac4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/40930">4. Change the hull colour&nbsp;It may sound somewhat simple, but sometimes the best solutions are. Particularly with an older boat where the insulation might not be as effective as on a newer boat, repainting the hull colour from a dark colour to white can make a big difference as the white hull reflects the heat of the sun far more.&nbsp;It is no surprise that houses in the Med or in the Caribbean are mostly white. White reflects the sun, so it becomes less hot than black. Why do you see more white cars in the Middle East than in the western part of Europe? For this same reason: because white reflects the heat. This same principle can also be applied to a yacht, as the hull of the yacht is a large area which can reflect the sunlight. So, if you feel like your boat could do with a bit of a make-over, you can give her a fresh new coat of paint and reduce your air conditioning load along the way! <img src="/uploads/store/photo/33658/image/large-73607ef87803ba255d7408fcf9dd86b8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/33658">5. Encourage guest awareness on board&nbsp;One of the most effective solutions for increasing your fuel efficiency comes from a surprising place: the guests on board your yacht! Whether it’s running a bath for a relaxing soak or turning on the air conditioning to cool off during those summer evenings, everything that uses power on a superyacht is generated by burning fuel. With this in mind, gently encouraging guests to be aware of their onboard consumption could make all the difference, as this may not be something which they have previously thought about. &nbsp;Finally, when discussing this topic, it would be remiss not to mention catalysers. Although it will not have a direct impact on the fuel efficiency of your superyacht, installing a catalyser between your engine and exhaust is a simple and effective way to make your yacht much less polluting. The SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) cleans up your exhaust fumes, thus enabling you to decrease your impact on the environment and is a solution which is recommended by<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">&nbsp;Diana Yacht Design&nbsp;</a>to all of their clients.&nbsp;So, with this in mind, whether it’s guests closing the doors of an air-conditioned saloon, adding a bulbous bow to your yacht or giving your boat a hull paint refresh, there are so many solutions to help you to decrease the carbon footprint of your vessel - without having to make any major investments. Moments ago Dutch shipyard Hakvoort launched the new 38.25-metre superyacht project BN 250. Named Soprano, this modern-classic comes from the drawing boards of Diana Yacht Design with an interior by Felix Buytendijk. The project was first signed through Ocean Independence back in 2014.

The yacht accommodates nine guests and seven crew members, and will feature a main deck owner’s suite that will include a stateroom with a king-size bed and bathroom forward. Two double guest staterooms and a VIP stateroom are located on the lower deck.

A foldout platform amidships will be recessed into the side the hull giving access to the water for boarding and swimming, much the same way as the one seen on board superyacht Pamela, also a Diana designed Hakvoort.

Hakvoort launches 38m superyacht Soprano

What may seem like a classic superyacht from the 80s, Pamela V is, in fact, an ultra modern superyacht that was built a mere six years ago. She was launched at Hakvoort in 2011 to a design by Diana Yacht Design and to the unique requirements of her experienced owner. She features an old-school canoe stern, a high interior volume, and storage for an 8-metre tender on the starboard-side main deck. Her interior is the work of Paris-based designer Jacques Grange. She was designed with long-distance cruising in mind and offers a range of 5,000 nm.

Diana Yacht Design has been one of the Dutch yachting industry’s most constant players since the company was established in the early 70s, but the retention of this presence hasn’t come without its ups and downs. Established as the Dutch, Italian Association of Naval Architects (Diana), the company soared in the early 80s, boasting a strong team of 15 employees working around the clock on projects for some of the biggest shipyards in the world. When the oil crisis hit in the late 80s and the consequential cancellation of several important projects, Diana were forced to quickly adapt to this precarious situation.

The workforce was cut to a strong, core team, with outsourcing now forming an integral element contributing to their sustained success. This formula proved itself when the company were commissioned to undertake the naval architecture and engineering of the 92 metre Evergreen (Now Attessa IV) in the mid-90s. At the time, Evergreen easily slid into the list of the world’s top 10 largest yachts, strengthening Diana’s position in the market to new heights.

Creative Director, Hans-Maarten Bais, explains this philosophy further, “A strong core team and personal approach to the way we interact with clients is the cornerstone of the business, and we have expertise across all disciplines in-house. This was the case when the company was founded and still is in 2016 - the number of employees doesn’t make the business, but the quality of the people we have in our workforce.”

With the industry weathering a new storm in the form of the Financial Crisis of 2008, this was clearly a smart philosophy to follow. With Bais joining in 1998 and slowly but surely taking on the responsibilities - and shares - that lead to his position today, the Financial Crisis was his first and potentially last chance to tackle a crisis as one of the directors.

“We realised the playing ground had changed in the yachting industry, and it became more and more important to chase leads. Financial Manager, Jerry Lakeman, and I therefore started excessively travelling around the world, fervently attending all the boat shows we could. All of a sudden we were back in business again. We expanded our network immensely and were even able to grow. I believe that the decision to proactively chase every opportunity during those unsteady months is the best choice we have ever made.”

Here, Bais elaborates on the journey of the company, and what we can expect from the studio at the heart of Dutch design.

The rebuild of Legend was completed earlier this year. Tell us about your involvement.

I first visited Legend (then Giant I) in 2007 with another client in Genoa. Unfortunately this client didn’t continue the project. After I heard the boat was heading to Holland for a rebuild I contacted the new owner and told him that we had been on the boat several years ago and had some original construction drawings if he was interested. We talked and made an appointment to meet.

I brought some preliminary sketches with me, and he liked them so much that he asked me to make a quotation for the whole job - all of a sudden we had a 77 metre refit job. She was lengthened in the stern by 3.6 metres, completely restyled with the extension of the superstructure and rebuilding of the mast to make her sleeker and more attractive. Amongst the long list of undertakings, the aft deck was also transformed into a fully classified helicopter deck, and she is fully Lloyd’s and SOLAS certified. We’re really proud of the final result.

You did the naval architecture on board Bijoux. Considering the financial difficulties that Moonen went through last year, was it ever a worry that she wouldn’t be completed?

Moonen was in a very difficult time. We had two projects under construction - one of which is still under construction, the Martinique... It was a hard time, but we kept in good contact with Moonen and they were confident that they would continue. We know them really well and we’ve worked with them for a long time. We told them that we would support them in any way possible through the difficult period. We’re really happy with Bijoux and it showed Moonen is a strong shipyard capable of keeping to their commitments even in hard times. I’m convinced that Moonen will continue and our relationship will remain fruitful.

What is your favorite project you’ve worked on over the years?

In general I can say that the projects where we work very closely with the clients are my favourite. Creating something which does not exist and will be used and enjoyed for decades is a very satisfying thought.

The one I liked most was Heliad II, which we built with Lynx Yachts. The nice thing about this project is that the complete styling, naval architecture and engineering was done by us, with a close collaboration with the interior designer. The owner liked classic motor yachts, but wanted a modern light interior. This combination worked out really well. She will be a truly classic with a modern twist and a surprisingly light and spacious interior.

The other one is Pamela V. We spent two years with the client, making designs and talking to shipyards. He wanted to know everything about all the details, which pushed us to look further. We had some new things on board Pamela V, a 8.1 metre tender, a side swimming platform and a full deck for the owner and his guests. The owner wanted his stateroom at the position where traditionally the wheelhouse is. We were able to find a solution by mixing up the complete layout to make this work. None of these things had yet be done on a classic design of only 45 metres.

What is on your drawing board right now?

There is a lot on our drawing boards at this moment, we have several projects all in different stages. We have the 38 metre Hakvoort BN250 with Hakvoort, due to be launched in 2017 in which we are responsible for the naval architecture, construction, exterior styling, and engineering design. Another project with Hakvoort is a 63 metre, with a scheduled launch in 2018. The cooperation with Hakvoort started back in 1986 with the build of the 43 metre motor yacht Hilarium (ex-Lady Alice). Now, 30 years and many yachts later, we are still working together.

In Poland we have a nice project under construction with Reymond &amp; Langton, a very cool 40 metre design, as well as the refit of the 38 metre Seawolf in Italy. We also have two 38 metres together with Tansu, for both yachts we will do the naval architecture and engineering, and we’re working hard on around five new concepts for some prospective clients. So it’s safe to say we’re quite busy, and we’re certainly looking forward to the future!

A new 38 metre superyacht whose construction started at the Buijs shipyard in the Netherlands was launched last week to be transported to Hakvoort’s superyacht facility in Monnickendam where she will be completed. The final launch of the yacht is set for 2017.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156147/image/large-0b6eb6c85597baf189e9aa245bda9bc0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156147"><img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156148/image/large-bd96be09b81879c02a7ee62b82683558.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156148">YN250 will feature an exterior similar to that of the acclaimed Pamela V and Heliad II. Her classic look and traditional canoe stern is supplemented with high tech navigation equipment and onboard features. Diana Yacht designed hull 472 underway to Hakvoort

Hakvoort shipyard launched the charming 45 metre superyacht Pamela V back in 2011. With her attractive profile and classic lines she boasts plenty of personality, welcoming guests on board with a pleasant style that seems to be a combination of Caribbean warmth, unpretentious class and a hint of retro. Naval architecture and exterior design are courtesy of Diana Yacht Design and her cosy interiors have been designed by Jacques Grange, a combination resulting in a successful design for a superyacht which seems to stand out for her sense of modesty. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139415/image/large-cba826cba5f52f8b9acc4951b21494ca.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139415">Pamela V's Owner had been searching for suitable partners in developing this new project and the cooperation seems to have developed into a pleasurable experience for everybody involved. This shows in the final result, where a firm balance was created between exterior designs and interior atmosphere. Overall, her look and feel mixes high quality, from materials to workmanship, with a personal vision, without going overboard. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139416/image/large-33a37ee11306721d4488f93a9e58c4b8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139416">As classic as she might seem at first sight, there are some interesting aspects that give Pamela V a contemporary touch. Updating traditional layouts for example, with the whole upper deck being dedicated as a private space for the owner, is one of this vessel's more interesting features. As a result, the wheelhouse can be found on the main deck, with a raised floor for optimal visibility which consecutively results in ample storage space below decks for tender and toys. Refreshing choices such as these obviously would've resulted in interesting challenges but a solid cooperation during this project resulted in an equally solid end result. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139417/image/large-0dbba53ae1ce60ee560af29b9cec4cdd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139417">We talked to the designers at Diana Yacht Design, who explained how the project came about: "In the beginning of 2005 the owner came to our office, asking us to design a attractive yacht with classic lines and a good stability. He knew what he wanted and had several ideas in mind that caused some challenges in the design. Because of the round canoe stern there was no garage/lazarette so it was quite a challenge to keep the sleek profile and make sure all three tenders, two wave runners and four lazers would fit in. It was a lot of fitting and measuring but with some special tricks we managed to solve them." <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139418/image/large-d80c050e43e6bf7c8ea1f16aee1597ee.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139418">The main aft deck area is pleasantly spacious, defined by the gentle curve of her stern. With virtually unobstructed vista views available, the central al fresco dining table presents a picture perfect setting for time spent comfortably in the shade. Furnishings are mainly wicker, with an additional arrangement of sofas and chairs welcoming guests instantly after boarding. Their orange and white cushions set the tone, almost feeling like a visual division between on board and surrounding areas, adding some privacy to an area which is, in essence, remarkably open. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139419/image/large-da5e58988f2a40395104b0e9824e7bb6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139419">Inside the main saloon, an overall homey atmosphere is mixed with subtle colonial influences. Dark wooden furnishings and framing form a warm contrast with off white sofas and blue upholstery on chairs and additional sofas. Big, classic chairs add a slightly eclectic feel with their striped pattern and seem to complement the design as a whole. The room consists of a central sitting area, with three large chairs and two comfortable sofas arranged around a coffee table which reminiscent of indigenous tribal shapes. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139420/image/large-669e15f32bde5faded41fd77db53091d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139420">Fore, a second, more informal seating area can be found. The L-shaped sofa and striped chair are placed adjacent to the dining arrangement, which is all dark wood and takes the Caribbean style to a new, yet subtle, level. Overall, the atmosphere is one of an intimate, luxurious yet modest holiday home at a secluded tropical location. Dark, elegant shutters allow ample sunlight to flow inside while completing the overall theme of warmth and class. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139421/image/large-73855cb9dfbc424eb1190b4ddeb7b71e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139421">Pamela V offers a remarkably spacious environment for a sizeable company of 12 guests, including the Owner, and has a crew of 10. The upper deck, being an Owner-dedicated area, has a similar look and feel to the main saloon, but more informal and with a colour palette based on taupe and white. The Owner's salon has a sitting and dining area and directly accesses the upper aft deck. The large lounging sofa is inviting and seems a perfect spot for a cup of coffee, overlooking the surroundings areas. After breakfast, the aft deck is perfect for spending the day. Secluded and with ample amounts of sun and shade, a semi-circular arrangement or sunbeds and al fresco dining table offer plenty of comfort and relaxation. Like all exterior spaces, the colour palette consists mainly of orange and white, setting a playful tone. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139422/image/large-9a2807971fc8ff89a72883cc452cbbd9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139422">The Owner's full beam stateroom has a more minimalist variation of Pamela V's overall design scheme. With the familiar stripes subtly adding colours to the whole, the most striking part of these quarters are undoubtedly the dramatic panorama views. Being situated on the fore upper deck, a location that is traditionally assigned to the bridge, the Owner's cabin optimally uses it's location and shows that, apart from an elegantly executed design, thinking out of the box cab deliver extraordinary results. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139423/image/large-809ba412827421eafe0c64217c176b13.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139423">The Owner's quarters, also include an elegant study offering a sofa/bed and a library, and offers his and hers bathrooms and two walk-in wardrobes. Application of sand and anthracite-coloured marble in the respective bathrooms, eloquently transforms the vessel's design scheme into a spa-reminiscent atmosphere. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139424/image/large-1dce475253d48029c18e86be3b324d73.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139424">The elegance demonstrated in the Owner's cabin can be found throughout all guest cabins on board. Light and airy in design, the cabins have a charmingly modest feel to them. Clean lines, balanced lighting scheme and fresh colour palettes with ample amounts of white offer guests a retreat that is both luxurious and understated. Cabins are configured into two VIP's and two twins with one additional Pullman each. Each guest cabin has been supplied with a wardrobe, AV system and a comfortable en-suite bathroom. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139425/image/large-15a88da427f822de8202b2511ec183a2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139425">Apart from style and luxury, Pamela V offers various possibilities for lots of fun. To start with, there is her upper aft deck. Here, various seating areas are available for guests to enjoy, all in the familiar orange and white colour palette. The playful semi-circular aft sofa offers perfect vista views and the adjacent setup of love seats form a perfect surrounding for reading a book, enjoying a cocktail or simply enjoying some good company. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139426/image/large-fdcd53d5a7249c37204d802a8304cfd5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139426">Bimini shades can turns this whole area from a warm sunbather's heaven into a cool, shade covered retreat. An al fresco dining area and fully equipped bar assure guests possibilities to spend large portions of their day on this charming deck. The Jacuzzi and outdoor shower complete the scope of all that this area of relaxation and comfort has to offer. Additionally, Pamela V is fitted with a completer array of toys for watersports and ample entertainment. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139427/image/large-4c0adc34f9f9c88ba1b2d2d105ce1fb3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139427">On the technical side, the designers at Diana Yacht Design also came up with several 'green' solution, as Jerry Lakeman explains: "Thinking about the environment we wanted to make this yacht as ‘green’ as possible. This is why the owner chose to install the Energy storage Inverter (ESI) on board. A. de Keizer Elektrotechniek b.v. has experienced high quality products of the Dutch company Exendis and awarded them therefore to deliver the ESI Energy Storage System. With an Energy storage Inverter and a battery the ESI can supply electrical energy, or on the other hand, store this energy, so that this energy can be used more efficiently. Simultaneously parallel running aside the main generators allows us to select smaller generators then normally necessary for the average ship use. The main benefit to install smaller generators in combination with the energy storage system is a higher efficient combustion for the generator diesel engines. Diesel engines have expected lower soot emissions at approximately 80%". Jerry continues: "During periods of required extra electrical power the stored energy in the Lithium Ion batteries will be addressed. With the CAM (controlling, alarm and monitoring system) DekaSis will integrate load management and control to the system. The exterior lines and the naval architecture of the superyacht are by the Dutch based design company Diana Yacht Design. On Thursday February 4th 2010 shipyard Made, in Moerdijk, launched the completed hull and superstructure of a 44.9 metre Hakvoort superyacht. Together with four VIP staterooms on the lower deck she can accommodate a total of 10 guests. The amount of tenders and water sport toys is unique for a yacht of this size, the area forward of the raised wheelhouse is used as a garage which carries multiple tenders and water sport toys. On the main deck there is a large tender bay where a 7,5m (!) tender is stored. When the tender is launched, this area will be used as a bathing place, the boarding ladder brings you to the fold-out swimming platform to get in close contact with the sea. Diana Yacht Design unveils Hakvoort’s YN 246

Hakvoort Shipyard has announced a new order for an advanced 44.90-metre motoryacht, scheduled for launch in early 2011. Suitable for global bluewater cruising, the yacht will provide accommodation for 12 guests and 12 crewmembers. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/122693/image/large-4beb272ffba3440068868343b8b8aa6a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/122693">Designed with a displacement-type hull shape, she will feature flared V-sections in the bow, large overhangs, a moderate deadrise amidships and a canoe stern. Her lines will be kept very low, in particular where the freeboard and superstructure are concerned.The main deck will feature the main tender at starboard side, a bathing platform admidships and a large tender garage on the foredeck. Located on a raised area forward on the main deck, the wheelhouse will feature a state-of-the-art integrated bridge arrangement.
