Previously known as Pestifer, she was built in 2009 to a design by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/582" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Clifford Denn Design (Company)">Clifford Denn</a> with an interior by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/67" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zuretti Interior Design (Company)">Francois Zuretti</a>. Set over three luxurious decks, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2448" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tanusha65.0m (213'3&quot;)Feadship2009">Tanusha</a> accommodates up to 10 guests in four luxurious staterooms and one full-beam master suite. Constructed with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, the 1,507 GT superyacht is powered by twin <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1409" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MTU (Company)">MTU</a> 16V 4000 M60 diesel engines, allowing her to reach a top speed of 16 knots and cover a transatlantic range of 5,000 nautical miles.

The first week of 2023 has seen a jump in superyachts visiting the Maldives. When a designer is quizzed by overly enthusiastic journalists about the inspiration behind their latest superyacht creation, one of the most challenging (and, I can imagine, potentially irritating) questions comes when the said writer asks said designer to distil down years’ worth of hard work, blood, sweat and tears, and to “describe their creation in three words.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231136/image/large-5d330a0385243845413e293c4737d141.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231136">As a writer who has been known to pose this question on numerous occasions, I have received a variety of responses to this question, with respondents often relying on tried and tested descriptions for yacht design to prevent me from asking too many follow-ups, whether that be ‘contemporary’, ‘soothing’, ‘sporty’ and so on.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231143/image/large-bb8ecde67b16a164bf84e16713ce765c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231143">One respondent who took a slightly different tack when answering this question was <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/582" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Clifford Denn Design (Company)">Clifford Denn</a>, the seasoned superyacht designer responsible for the exteriors of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>’s 65-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2448" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tanusha65.0m (213'3&quot;)Feadship2009">Tanusha</a> (delivered in 2009), as well as numerous <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a> yachts, including the 50-metre 499 GT superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6106" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Omaha49.9m (163'9&quot;)Heesen Yachts2018">Omaha</a>, and the 49.6-metre&nbsp;Lady Li. Putting it simply, when a boat is built on speculation, she must retain somewhat of a universal and adaptable appeal in her design, for a wide range of potential owners and cannot afford to be anything like an acquired taste.<img src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/231151/image/large-07dd9b5781286a868dbdf785ca1c52a0.jpg?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&amp;X-Amz-Credential=AKIA52TLVJASOPFTPHWY%2F20220630%2Feu-west-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&amp;X-Amz-Date=20220630T141753Z&amp;X-Amz-Expires=900&amp;X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&amp;X-Amz-Signature=097c43972706aeaedaabf73432d611ac8045ceffe0613963e55154c64b2c980c" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231151">Optimising space Furthermore, as the second boat in her class,<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6825" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arkadia49.9m (163'9&quot;)Heesen Yachts2021">&nbsp;Arkadia</a> also serves to showcase the best of her Dutch builder’s space optimisation capabilities, with her carefully-developed platform developed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a>’s in-house team and optimised to deliver the largest-possible volume and liveable onboard space, whilst still remaining below that all-important 500 GT threshold. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231141/image/large-4f1daa8ec2ddaac1c4c646082d98ff2f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231141">Notably too, the interior general arrangement was also developed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/582" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Clifford Denn Design (Company)">Clifford Denn</a>, using a great deal of input from the original, very experienced owner of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a>’s 50-metre superyacht Ann G which shares the same technical platform as the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6825" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arkadia49.9m (163'9&quot;)Heesen Yachts2021">Arkadia</a> 50m series. This was down to the inclusion of features such as comfortable stairs, a spacious entry lobby with wide interior doors and corridors which are typically only found on much larger yachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231163/image/large-48833e7647f791a349223eaf79c25048.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231163">In terms of accommodation, a total of 10 guests can be housed on board, split across five elegantly-designed and comfortable staterooms, with the owner’s stateroom found forward on the main deck and the remaining cabins located on the lower deck.Practically perfect&nbsp;Both physically striking and elegantly mobile on the water thanks to the presence of her bulbous bow – which also aids her twin <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1409" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MTU (Company)">MTU</a> 8V4000 M63 engines in powering <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6825" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arkadia49.9m (163'9&quot;)Heesen Yachts2021">Arkadia</a> to a top speed of 15 knots – <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6825" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arkadia49.9m (163'9&quot;)Heesen Yachts2021">Arkadia</a>’s exterior design features a traditional peak bow with a reversed sheer line which is seamlessly incorporated into her profile. Her military-style wheelhouse lends the vessel a more masculine look, whilst avoiding making her appear overly rugged. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231122/image/large-8307b5cb1ec290a8818949e21380b605.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231122">Indeed, for exterior designer, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/582" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Clifford Denn Design (Company)">Clifford Denn</a>, designing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6825" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arkadia49.9m (163'9&quot;)Heesen Yachts2021">Arkadia</a> offered the perfect opportunity to tread the often precarious balance between practical design solutions and superyacht elegance – a balance he has struck with aplomb. “I like to incorporate practical elements into my designs, for example, the windows are what we describe as ‘commercial-style’, which means they lean forwards, so that the sun and the rain cannot get into the wheelhouse. Using this style of window also helps to maximise the usable space on the sundeck, which is naturally very important to those on board.”&nbsp;And, with the sundeck spanning an impressive 98 square metres, and coming complete with a Jacuzzi, an al-fresco dining area and ample sun loungers, the proof of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/582" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Clifford Denn Design (Company)">Denn</a>’s design is in the pudding.&nbsp;Behind the wheelWhen asked about the often-cited automotive influences behind his design, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/582" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Clifford Denn Design (Company)">Denn</a>is quick to clarify. “Everyone says it’s ‘classic car inspired’, but it wasn’t ‘classic car’ necessarily: it could be any car. It’s more inspired by cars that might become classic and timeless. It is about using those sorts of details that stand the test of time. For example, in the aft fashion plates, you can see these little silver strakes. One of the guys that worked on our 3D modelling had worked for Fisker, doing the Fisker car, and so at the time, we were calling these the ‘Fisker whiskers.’<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231189/image/large-a21c4ae8eb08a9144a3a339c99fc9a32.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231189">He continues: “You could design a boat which is entirely practical without including any of these details, but we are trying to create an E-type Jaguar or an Aston Martin as opposed to a Land Rover in our designs.”An adaptable interior&nbsp;Following the same course as the exterior design, the experienced team at the Bath-based studio <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/56" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Reymond Langton Design Ltd. (Company)">Reymond Langton Design</a> was also tasked with crafting interiors for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6825" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arkadia49.9m (163'9&quot;)Heesen Yachts2021">Arkadia</a> which would be stylish, fit the all-important budget of the shipyard and, crucially, could easily be adapted to fit the tastes of any potential buyer. Pascale Reymond, co-founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/56" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Reymond Langton Design Ltd. (Company)">Reymond Langton Design&nbsp;</a>explains the studio’s approach to this brief. “The aim was to create a geometric, linear and clean environment. The ambience is cosy and warm and adaptable to all clients, regardless of age. The resulting design is highly elegant and contemporary, which we complemented with the inclusion of modern loose-fitting furniture.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231161/image/large-f25ba9c6d4445bf4e2a6cb4ab7d4b344.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231161">Contrast is key That said, despite this need to appeal to a wide potential market, there is nothing beige or predictable in what has been produced by the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/56" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Reymond Langton Design Ltd. (Company)">Reymond Langton</a>, thanks to the presence of numerous contrasting materials and strategically placed, eye-catching geometric details: all of which express the artistry and passion behind the design. <img src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/231153/image/large-dd7bbb5fbcd42ef7d171b5f5f0cc3b7f.jpg?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&amp;X-Amz-Credential=AKIA52TLVJASOPFTPHWY%2F20220630%2Feu-west-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&amp;X-Amz-Date=20220630T141744Z&amp;X-Amz-Expires=900&amp;X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&amp;X-Amz-Signature=1fdc5e8a90c8a04ddc9bb7242ed9d67ee20d56f84fd237edb28baafc25754142" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231153">As Pascale Reymond highlights: “This is the second spec boat in the line that we have designed with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a>, and it has been a wonderful collaboration. Although they gave us some initial input, they left us with the maximum freedom to express our creativity, and that is what we have done.”&nbsp;Stepping inside, the strategic juxtaposition of light and dark is a running theme which plays throughout the vessel. A light Tanganyika veneer is contrasted with a deep American walnut for the walls, with both dark American walnut and taupe Carvalho used for the furniture and brown <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/558" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Giorgio Armani S.p.A. (Company)">Armani</a> marble used for the guest bathrooms.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231142/image/large-b836e835a9c49c919c310a909e1b859a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231142">Art on the water&nbsp;A superyacht is sometimes referred to as a ‘floating work of art’, and this is certainly an apt description for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a>’s <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6825" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arkadia49.9m (163'9&quot;)Heesen Yachts2021">Arkadia</a>, on account of the carefully crafted artistic details found dispersed throughout the vessel. Superyacht Tanusha in Marseille

The custom-built 65 metre Feadship superyacht Tanusha was built in 2010 as Pestifer to a design by Clifford Denn with an interior by Francois Zuretti. Set over five luxurious decks, she accommodates up to 12 guests in five en-suite guest cabins and one full width master suite that is ideal for both family and charter vacations. The yacht was sold in 2014 after which her name was changed to Tanusha. The owner decided to keep her recognisable blue hull and yellow accents unchanged.

One of the oldest and most established shipyards in the Netherlands, Balk Shipyard has become synonymous with family traditions and quality Dutch craftsmanship. The company has achieved a 200 plus year reign as masters in the build, and more recently, the refit field without appearing to be blowing their own trumpet once. Continuous results of the highest calibre and a can-do attitude is what seems to have brought Balk this far, and is a quality they have embraced to take them into the future, and beyond.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156464/image/large-d87d4426871f74635882bbec4c631648.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156464">We meet with Daan Balk, an eighth generation leader of the company whom has taken over the family business from his father, and from so many who has done so before him. When asked about the company’s rich history, Daan doesn’t hesitate to proudly reveal the family line that has led him to where he is today, “The shipyard was established in 1764 by my family Balk, and is still 100% owned by the Balk family today. The family history dates back to 1602 where they established themselves in Elburg, which is an old fortress town in the Netherlands, where they worked as carpenters in the city. After doing that for a couple of hundred years, the family built Elburg’s first shipyard in the late 1700’s, where they constructed small fishing boats.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156465/image/large-ad7c6b911531ba554a8ea0b083007a0d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156465">And so the family’s time in the maritime industry began. For the next few 100 years the Balk family experienced ups and downs ranging from a booming fishing era, the first and second world war, to the closing of the Zuidersee district from the North Sea, leaving Elburg, once at the water’s edge, now in the back waters of the land reclaimed area. This led the company to adjust their business ideal and switch over to the construction of small pleasure craft, and at the same time, begin construction in steel, instead of their tradition of building in wood.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156466/image/large-61f1d66f87b5f610ef2a20aeff58f6a7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156466">“At the time I was doing my chief engineer training while working on commercial ships. At the age of 28 the news came that my father had passed away, which had me come home to take over the company from my mother,” recalls Daan. The Balk family worked hard over the next few years to get the company back on track, which they managed to do, and in 2002 was awarded the Dutch Royal seal for being a family run business over 200 years.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156467/image/large-eb035bbe886874aa5d72a228507198df.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156467">This seemed like a good time to review the company’s future, and as their current location in Elburg limited the yard to pleasure craft ranging between 20m to 25m, a new facility was on the cards. Balk decided to purchase a yard that was going under in the town of Urk, and in 2004 relocated to their current location.The new facility and its capabilities had a direct impact on the yard’s direction, “We decided to instead of focusing on the new build side of the yachting industry, to look more at the refit business and to be a sort of backup to the larger shipyards in the Netherlands, somewhere they can haul out their vessels at short notice to have work completed on their new build or refit projects.” This approach led to new business, and soon Balk found their position within the refit sector.With the new yard came a revival of Balk’s skills in working with metal; aluminium in particular. These renewed skills gave Daan the confidence to approach other yards with the intention of assisting in the construction of their new build projects. After some convincing, Balk was given the opportunity to build sections of Feadship De Vries’ hull 680, M/Y Pestifer (now Tanusha), which was later launched in 2006. Their relationships with other yards grew, with other projects including works for Royal Huisman and Heesen. This still forms a large part of the business today.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156468/image/large-bed901d24a44339e99f48b298435d932.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156468">The refit sector however is where Balk really comes into their own, with a strong history in the repair and maintenance of yachts. Some of their most recent and successful works include the refits of Alloy Yacht’s CaryAli and Heesen’s Seven Sins. Seven Sins saw her bow section be removed and replaced by a new section custom built by the shipyard. “It turns out the project was something they wanted to do from day one,” says Daan. “Together with Frank Laupman and Van Oossanen Naval Architects, the owner thought that the bow was already too short back then. So a few years ago already he asked Laupman to have a look at a new design, and Van Oossanen to see if the performance will be better by adding a bulbous bow. The three owners decided together to have these changes made to the yacht before they would go on a world cruise together, which will take place following the coming Caribbean season.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156469/image/large-a26651e1043a4fe24fdd0c8681c54af8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156469">Despite their successes at the new facility in Urk, Balk has already begun looking at ways to expand the shipyard again, and another relocation Daan says, is imminent, “Last year we had the 65m Callisto out of the water and she was absolutely the limit, so we are slightly restricted in our lifting capabilities here.” He continues to explain that the local Urk government have for a few years now been looking into extending the harbour area by building new docks. To expedite this process, Balk, along with a few other local enterprises decided to put forth the initial funds to kick start the project. “We finally have the government on our side, who has agreed to the extension plans, and research have now begun to finilase the process, and we foresee construction to the new harbour to begin in about three years.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156470/image/large-0a9f90d345b56deec8648446f19e72d7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156470">Despite the plans of a new facility, Daan sees Balk continuing in the refit sector, yet doesn’t rule out the possibility of a new build project, “I strongly believe that the future in new builds for the next five years lies in the 70-130m size range. And that step is just too big for us at the moment. I see ourselves continuing in the refit sector, and hopefully one day will have one or two owners that were happy with our abilities in refit, and decide to do a new build with us. As for his three sons, he secretly hopes that the Balk bloodline continues within the company, but at the same time wish for them only to be happy and successful in whatever they decide to do, “I see my task now to at least make sure the company is doing well, to improve growth and to make it sustainable for them. Superyacht Pestifer pictured in Gibraltar

On the 19th of september, SuperYachtTimes.com was the first to report on the latest launching by Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw. Feadship have now released more information on this 65.00m (213’3”) superyacht. She has been built for an experienced owner who was looking to upgrade from his current yacht. At the time of the launch the hull was covered in a grey coating that will protect the superb high gloss color that awaits final delivery after sea trials are completed. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/129245/image/large-d33a77efea1f422a18ec1b156de286ff.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/129245">The project was required by the owners to take only three years from initial contact to completion, which entailed very close cooperation between the other main parties involved: De Voogt Naval Architects, Clifford Denn (exterior styling), François Zuretti (interior design), the owner’s team Neil Cheston and John Bilesky, and project manager Rob de Vries. She provides superlative accommodation for eight guests, who will be served by no less than 24 crewmembers. “It is fantastic that we can produce such a masterpiece of a yacht in these challenging economic times,” said Henk de Vries at the launch ceremony. “The yacht has enormous volume for her length, which makes her a genuine world class ‘big boat’. The owner and his wife appreciate beautiful things and have commissioned people whom they know and trust to bring their tastes to the fore.” The interior harks back to the glory days of yachting with a 21st-century execution. Unusually, it was the starting point for the entire project. “Normally we start a project with some general specifications, then draw the lines, make a GA and design the interior. In this case we received a very detailed specification and interior design from François Zuretti and our challenge was to create a hull around this while incorporating all the elements that one expects from a Feadship. All had to be achieved within the parameters of Clifford’s sophisticated styling profile, and we are delighted with the well balanced result of this innovative process.” The final word before hull 680 was christened went to her captain, George Overend. “The success of a project of this magnitude and in this time scale involves teams not individuals.
