Created for an experienced owner who selected Dutch design firm <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/926" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design (Company)">Sinot Yacht Architecture &amp; Design</a> for the exterior and interior design, the yacht has a powerful, contemporary aesthetic. The yacht's high bow and tiered decks offer fantastic views and protection from whatever the oceans can throw at her, while the dark glazing which wraps around the three decks floods her interiors with natural light. We caught up with Paul Costerus, Lead Designer at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/926" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design (Company)">Sinot</a>, to find out a little more about the inspiration behind this distinctive new superyacht. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219404/image/large-626d62cd947ce06fa097990e62fcdc29.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219404">What was the owner’s original brief for the exterior and interior project of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6432" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Top Five II61.0m (200'2&quot;)Royal Hakvoort Shipyard2021">Top Five II</a>?“The owners briefed us to create a yacht with multiple relaxation and living zones, which could cater dinner parties for groups up to 50 people. Therefore, the yacht needed to be equipped with vast outdoor deck space and the furniture on the owner’s aft deck had to be specifically designed so that it can be arranged to host a 50-person seated dinner. On top of that they wanted to have their own private retreat, even while having guests on board.”&nbsp;“The style of the yacht’s exterior was determined as a ‘modern classic’ while the interior design brief was asking for a modern, contemporary and architectural approach on design, with a high level of detail and contrast in materials and finishes.” &nbsp;Able to accommodate as many as 12 guests, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6432" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Top Five II61.0m (200'2&quot;)Royal Hakvoort Shipyard2021">Top Five II</a> features six beautifully appointed staterooms, each with its own ensuite. The five guest staterooms, which are split between the main and lower deck, are clad in a light wood, with wardrobes and doors that echo the styling of Japanese paper screens, a design motif employed throughout the vessel. However, the master suite on the upper deck is the true cherry of this yacht. Forward facing and nestled within a grande suite, the owner’s deck opens up onto a near spherical bedroom that has truly unparalleled views.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219406/image/large-9c4aae7a733b8b9c8ed8cee3820f94f3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219406"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219407/image/large-dae40dbdab1819fafbff4d9dd327c1a0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219407">Can you tell me more about the master suite with its oculus window and curved glass walls?“The owner’s stateroom is a completely secluded area for the owner to enjoy. It features a TV room and lounge, an office, twin bathrooms with dressing areas and the stateroom itself. By creating the curved glass façade –which starts in the lounge area on starboard and ends in her bathroom on portside – and installing a skylight, we made sure that when the owners do retreat in their private zone, they do not have the feeling of being inhibited. They have the same views as from the lounge areas and aft exterior decks. The space offers a toned-down palette of soft and luxury materials such as the silk carpets, a cashmere covered headboard and leather upholstery around the bed frame.”If light is the superpower of the yacht’s design, then the master suite is the crescendo. The rounded windows and direct access to the private terrace give this part of the yacht a completely unique feel, truly encompassing the goal of a retreat, cleverly disparate from the main body of the vessel, while at the same time being very much the heart of the vessel.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219409/image/large-cbedf79d8a6483165341772f7c92b265.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219409">What is the most exciting thing about having creative autonomy over an entire superyacht design?“That we have full control over the connectivity between the outdoor and indoor areas; both functionally and aesthetically we were able to create the perfect balance. &nbsp;Another big benefit is that the creation of the interior and exterior design follows perfectly aligned paths. While creating the preliminary interior designs, we could use the knowledge we had of the exterior design at that stage and vice versa.”&nbsp;Where have the materials and furniture been sourced from - can you tell me about any particularly unique pieces/surfaces?“Stones are selected straight from the quarries in Italy. The travertine which is present throughout the vessel was personally picked by the owners in the area of Rome. The furniture sourced mainly from US based suppliers and the leather produced by renowned Italian leather manufacturers. Her bathroom features a unique piece of Statuario marble which was selected out of many slabs for its unique markings.”&nbsp;The staircase and elevator seem to be a major feature of the design, how did your team conceive this concept?“At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/926" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design (Company)">Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design</a> we always push ourselves to create something unique in the atriums of the yachts we design. We spend a lot of time designing, re-designing and balancing this area and while a good design may only need one good idea, it’s the time you spend on it, shaving, polishing and finishing which makes it brilliant.”<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6432" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Top Five II61.0m (200'2&quot;)Royal Hakvoort Shipyard2021">Top Five II</a>’s central stairwell features the same paper screen-esque pattern to the walls, with the panels of leather outlined in polished black lacquer. In the epicentre of the stairwell glides the elevator, with an oculus at its heart that appears to glow. The staircase itself looks as though it is floating, the steps are anchored on either end but have no back which opens the space and creates a fluidity to the spherical space. The wall-side of the stairs is paneled in a dark glossy wood which reflects the stairwell and adds to the luminosity of the design. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219408/image/large-34c4af641c03049bfc7089612741d512.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219408">What is the part of the vessel you are most proud of?“The interior design of the owner’s suite and the guest staterooms. If you are on board and walk from the lounges with their natural buzz through the majestic staircase into these areas you immediately feel the tranquility. The change in design is subtle while the effect is magnificent.”&nbsp;At 1,291 GT the yacht has a cavernous interior, with multiple saloon and lounge rooms that flow through the vessel. The pinnacle of these is the main deck saloon and dining room that is filled with polished surfaces and such materials like satin and cashmere. The dining table is separated from the comfortable saloon with its silvery sofa and chairs, by a custom dresser with glass cupboards that reach to the ceiling and hold an array of intricate glass vases. These panels create a transparent division that creates an intimacy within the dining space. It’s been a blizzard of a year for most of us as we faced down the reverberating impact of a global pandemic while still ensuring business continuity and growth. As an industry we’ve come off lighter than some, and during these post-lockdown months there has been a surge in interest in the yachting sector. She looks mean and intimidating and cleanly cuts through the water thanks to her needle-thin hull and angular bow. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a> was requested by the owner to manage her naval architecture, and the team stretched the schematics to provide astounding 2.4-metre high ceilings on both the main and owner’s deck.&nbsp;These spaces were decked out and curated by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/926" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design (Company)">Sinot Yacht Architecture &amp; Design</a> who opted for a crisp and classy natural colour palette using rich oak and walnut panelling throughout. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6432" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Top Five II61.0m (200'2&quot;)Royal Hakvoort Shipyard2021">Top Five II</a> comes equipped with an array of state-of-the-art standout features, such as a cinema room, a swimming pool and a fire pit. She can accommodate up to 12 guests who will be catered for by 18 crew members. As we emerge from a hectic and enjoyable in-person boat show season, following two years of Covid-19 complications, there is a palpable sense of excitement and energy in the industry. Now more than ever, yachting is under the spotlight as offering the ideal, safe escape from the pressures of the everyday for clients all over the world.&nbsp;But for the uninitiated who are discovering the existence of this industry for the first time, finding a route into yachting can seem a daunting prospect. Thankfully, help is at hand. Here we speak to team members from the Dutch design and naval architecture studio <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>?&nbsp;Hans-Maarten Bais (Creative Director): There are several ways to start working for a company like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>. First, you can do a traineeship which typically takes place halfway through your studies, you can also take on a graduation research project, or you can contact a company directly if you have spare time available to work during your holidays.When I started working at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA&nbsp;</a>in the late 90s, I was just 21 and everyone working there was well over 40. Back then, most of us still worked using drawing tables, no computers nor smart software. Everyone there took time to educate me and teach me everything, so I quickly discovered that what you learn at university is just the basics of design and naval architecture. You can only learn the real job from working!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/208755/image/large-59adf7e9e625e3e1331e6fa104b0105b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/208755">What are your three top tips for getting into the superyacht industry?1. Contact a design or naval architecture company and ask if they have any holiday jobs. You can do this even if you have only just started your studies.2. Take on an internship or graduation research project. Start looking early, preferably far before all the other students do, to find the best internship for you.&nbsp;3. Use your network. There is always somebody in your network or in your parents’ or friends’ networks with an industry contact. This is especially true in the Netherlands: we need to take advantage of our Dutch maritime heritage!&nbsp;What makes working at&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>&nbsp;distinctive for a young person?We receive a lot of job applications for being a yacht designer but in the end, the yacht industry is not only dependent on designers. It all starts with a design, but after that, many hundreds or thousands of hours are spent on designing, an engine room, a freshwater system or designing a construction that is light and strong at the same time.&nbsp;At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA</a>, all these designs are part of the work. The design doesn’t stop with an interior or exterior layout, the design is unifying all those systems, constructions and calculations into one big project: the superyacht, to fit the dream of an owner. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>&nbsp;and how did you find working there as an intern? Jim Wursten (Naval Architect and former intern): I am currently working as a naval architect. I mainly help with the construction of the yachts, making 2D drawings of different sections of the yacht. Apart from the construction, I also help with the power and resistance calculations, as I improved the method we currently use through my thesis work.&nbsp;I really enjoyed working at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA</a> during my traineeship: everyone is friendly and helpful, and they are also great teachers and mentors &nbsp;– I have worked with almost all of the different engineers across the company.&nbsp;Agaath Siepel (Naval Architect and former intern):What do your friends outside the industry think of your job?&nbsp;Most of my friends and family are very enthusiastic about my job. Whenever I tell new friends or people what I do, they look very impressed, as it is not a very common occupation!Please outline your current role at&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA</a>&nbsp;and what this involves day-to-dayMy graduation research has now come to an end and I graduated only a few weeks ago. (Company)">DIANA</a>. At the moment, I am working on the GT calculations on one of our projects. Moran Yacht &amp; Ship has announced the sale of project Fast Track, a 64-metre Hakvoort expected for delivery in 2019.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/9923/image/large-6309f72eab348a890ef9132ec0c0a555.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/9923">The Florida-based Moran Yacht &amp; Ship construction team are currently negotiating the build contract on behalf of the buyer. The construction team will also oversee the complete build of the vessel through its delivery, and have compiled her technical specification.&nbsp;On board, Project Fast Track will accommodate 14 guests across seven cabins.&nbsp;Although the project is currently confidential, further details on Fast Track will be revealed by SYT as they become available.
