Constructed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> in 2004, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Utopia71.6m (234'11&quot;)Feadship2004">Utopia</a> stands as one of the shipyard’s largest yachts, boasting refined lines crafted by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/30" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="De Voogt Naval Architects (Company)">De Voogt Naval Architects</a>. Her interior, envisioned by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/61" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RWD (Company)">RWD</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/258" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Michael McQuiston Interior Design & Decoration (Company)">Michael McQuiston</a>, exudes luxury, featuring six staterooms to accommodate up to 12 guests. Designed with both relaxation and entertainment in mind, the motor yacht offers generous outdoor spaces, including a sun deck complete with a Jacuzzi and a beach club. Equipped with twin <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1408" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Caterpillar Inc (Company)">Caterpillar</a> engines, the four-deck yacht achieves a maximum speed of 16 knots and a cruising range of 4,500 nautical miles. Cruising under the Cayman Islands flag,&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Utopia71.6m (234'11&quot;)Feadship2004">Utopia</a> is currently available for charter in the Caribbean throughout the winter season.

When I was 14, I built my first transistor radio in a cigar box. And then, just a few years later, I built my own radio transmitter from an old radio with recycled lamps. Ever since then, I have felt this passion for radio transmitting equipment, which led to the founding of the company in 1969.What does your company offer the yachting industry?Since 1994, we have been focused on GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) amplification for indoor coverage of 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G. This has developed into our main product line, offering unique equipment which is unlike any other solution in the world and enables those on board to benefit from reliable and strong coverage. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/204263/image/large-4f17518ef0c5c336b7448fab5edc43e2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/204263">What are the problems faced by crew and owners with signal on board? There are many. Inconsistency in signal strength is one, as it depends on the height of the smartphone above sea level. If the vessel is not too far from the coastline, the signal might still be reasonable on the flybridge – as it can reach the operator antennas located on the coast – but it will still be too weak on the lower decks.&nbsp;With this lower signal strength, the data performance of smartphones and routers will gradually decrease, resulting in a small bandwidth that is unusable for many applications.&nbsp;The signal is also often unstable, even when travelling only a short distance from the coast, and can go from good to weak every few kilometres. This is because operators install antennas where they can lure in customers, meaning that many areas along the scarcely habited coasts have no antennas at all!&nbsp;Finally, most vessels have a steel hull with wooden accommodation, as well as windows protected against heat loss. This means they are almost completely shielded against signals from outside, including incoming GSM signals. In this case, you would have to go outside on the highest deck to make contact with the rest of the world.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/183870/image/large-a394b549a1bb192715be95593c7c5d8b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/183870">How do your products address these issues?We offer two main solutions for superyachts: the Hotel Solution (Router Connect), which consists of two omnidirectional antennas installed as high up as possible on the mast.&nbsp;This signal is conducted to a MIMO amplifier and range optimiser system to filter and regulate the strength and stability for all operators on all available frequency bands. In short: this signal is usable up to 35km from the most nearby operator antennas on the coast – more than enough range to meet the needs of today’s superyachts. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/207731/image/large-4ccc064e1c50ae4fe65271d17fd9957b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/207731">This signal is then fed into routers equipped with a series of modems with SIM cards from different operators, which deliver data bandwidth depending on the local geographical situation. The bandwidth from the modems is bonded together, providing one broad and stable internet connection.&nbsp;Our second solution is the GSM Connect indoor coverage solution. This is similar to the first, but the adjusted and filtered signal from the amplifier is distributed over a coaxial network with small antennas installed where coverage is needed. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/207730/image/large-3b695f57d51c7b7d65d3c0417daae6e2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/207730">The big advantage of this solution is that those on board do not need to connect to the Wifi, they can just continue to use their own device without changing any settings, and will pay for their own usage when they get home (as a major bonus for the yacht’s owner!). This also means there is no limit on the number of simultaneous users of the system, and no influence on the available bandwidth if more users are active or not.&nbsp;The result of both systems is a very substantial diminution of the VSAT cost, as well as a huge increase in the flexibility of the communication possibilities on board.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/577/image/large-ea1296089209ec45bcc85f23a2bb0099.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/577">It would be remiss to end the article without some name dropping. Following her latest major refit period, the 72-metre motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Utopia71.6m (234'11&quot;)">Utopia</a> departed the Netherlands last month after spending 10 weeks at Feadship for upgrades. This is the yacht’s third return to her original builder since having been launched in 2004.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/43702/image/large-44e8e6fe8966ce7c0a8458b154f3fbe1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/43702">The Feadship refit team, working together with the owners’ representative, had two and a half months to repaint <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Utopia71.6m (234'11&quot;)">Utopia’s</a> cabin walls, mast and foredeck area. A new coating of antifouling was also applied to the bottom of the yacht.As <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Utopia71.6m (234'11&quot;)">Utopia</a> is nearing her 15-year Lloyd’s survey next year, several activities related to this stringent inspection were also carried out in addition to upgrades to the engine room that will allow her to cruise uninterruptedly for even longer.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/43701/image/large-a039c16ce222d991948c33e84b40373f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/43701">“This project has once again made sure that Utopia has the highest pedigree possible in the world today,” said Captain Kevin Collins before setting course for southern Europe. “The owners are now looking forward to putting their better-than-new Feadship through her paces as they embark on their next adventures.”

Feadship completes 10-week refit of 72m superyacht Utopia

Over two decades separate these two yachts that were built at the same shipyard in the Netherlands in 1982 and 2004 respectively. Designed by Arthur de Fever, Strangelove was launched as Paminusch and was later renamed Paris before her current owner settled on Strangelove. A second Paminusch was delivered by Feadship four years later in 1986 to a design by De Voogt Naval Architects. Utopia is a 72-metre motor yacht that was launched in 2004, the same year that the 86-metre Ecstasea took to the water at Feadship’s Royal Van Lent shipyard. The Feadships Strangelove and Utopia in Portofino

The 71.60-metre Feadship Utopia has completed her refit to the complete satisfaction of her owners and captain. The extensive repainting work on the superstructure and hull was on display as the yacht was re-launched by Feadship. Utopia also benefits from a wide range of mechanical improvements and updates in a refit project that was completed within a remarkably short timeframe.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/144830/image/large-6be33924f0ab7f546a07378d92d2a34b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/144830">This was the second occasion that the owner of this wonderful Feadship has had Utopia refitted by Feadship since she was first launched there in 2004. In close cooperation with the owner’s representatives and the Feadship refit team, the yard period was carefully planned to meet the owner’s cruising schedule and budget.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/144831/image/large-e7c6649f8d1c60363ae2cc545ada081a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/144831">With her new top coating, Utopia is set to again steal the show in the world’s finest marinas. The new HMSA Sewage treatment plant system will allow her to operate for extended periods in all cruising areas and ports, fully meeting the authorities’ requirements. Feadship Utopia re-launched after ideal refit at Feadship

Feadship has welcomed home the 71.60-metre Feadship Utopia for a range of maintenance activities and technical upgrades. Originally launched in 2004, this is the second time Utopia has returned to Feadship for a refit, the first being a successful project in 2007 to personalise the yacht to her then new owner’s requirements. <img src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/143209/image/large-d4b163f83ee7b156e91193c3a44df62f.jpg" alt="" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/143209">“The main reason to come to Feadship for a refit is to retain the essence of how the boat was built and ensure she remains of the highest pedigree possible in the world today,” says Utopia’s captain, Kevin Paul Collins. The main activities involved in the project are repainting the hull and superstructure, adding a new coat of underwater antifouling, installation of a new A-Sea shore power convertor, installing a new HMSA sewage treatment plant to meet the latest IMO requirements, and reconditioning the teak decks. Feadship will also carry out a wide range of minor maintenance jobs on the exterior, interior and machinery systems as Utopia is brought – quite literally – to better than new status. “We are both delighted and proud to have Utopia back for the second time since her launch,” says Ico Vergouwe, Refit Manager at Feadship. “This shows how both the owner and crew feel confident that Feadship offers the best service at a reasonable price, making sure that Utopia keeps her high value. It is also pleasing to note that our open approach makes it attractive enough for an owner to bring a yacht back to the Netherlands even when this means adapting his schedule to fit in a tight refit slot.” Captain Collins, who has been at the helm of Utopia since May 2011, agrees. “Although we have covered some 46,000 miles over the past two years, Utopia has been exceptional. She has also been very well maintained and we could easily have waited another year for this refit. However, when he heard that a dock was available in March the owner changed his cruising plans and sent us off on our third Atlantic crossing in seven months. It is definitely worth the effort as the owners get a better product… And it is a great experience for me as skipper to take a signature Feadship like this back to the yard. Superyacht Utopia returns home to Feadship for refit

Chris Cecil-Wright, one of the superyacht industry's most influential and successful yacht brokers, has left Edmiston, to set up a new yachting company.<img src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/142870/image/large-167ed28adf76399bd146d14216bca430.jpg" alt="" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/142870">SYT spoke to Chris about leaving Edmiston, and Chris commented: "Nick (Edmiston) and I are still firm friends, but after 20 years together I felt I needed a change. I'm enjoying the challenge".During his years at Edmiston, Chris was responsible for many of the company’s biggest deals, such as the sale of the 72 metre Utopia, the 78 metre Hampshire II, the 90 metre Lauren L, the 99 metre Feadship Dream, and many more.

Katrion was built by Feadship De Vries in 2003. She was the second yacht built by Feadship for this owner, his first yacht was a 48m yacht with the same name. Feadship’s Katrion leaving Antibes

Koninklijke De Vries Makkum, part of the Feadship group, has successfully completed the refit of the 71.60-meter (234’ 9”) <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/291">Utopia</a>. Originally launched in 2004 and the second largest Feadship yet built, the yacht’s new owners had previously spent several months chartering <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/291">Utopia</a>. Delighted with her first class facilities and technologies, they decided to personalize <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/291">Utopia</a> to their onboard living style. The project took 80 working days to complete and has further enhanced the yacht’s outdoor relaxation options. <div align="center"><img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/122119/image/large-44db52747a2b208ac8ecdcf8febc08ef.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/122119"></div> This is one of four major refit projects carried out on a Feadship at the Koninklijke De Vries yard in Makkum since it opened in late 2005. Other successes include <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/638">Siran</a> (extension, structural and interior work), a completely new interior on <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/188">Inevitable (ex. Mi Gaea)</a> and a major overhaul of the engine room on a 50-meter Feadship. Various other projects are currently under negotiation. “The in-house knowledge of our yachts makes Koninklijke De Vries Makkum the best possible place for a refit,” says Ico Vergouwe, manager refit department. “We have access to all the original design and build information via the yard and De Voogt Naval Architects, and are used to working in close cooperation with owner teams. The sheer size of the facilities in Makkum makes it possible to have multiple projects underway at the same time, and the accommodation options for crew and/or owner’s representatives are excellent.”<a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/291">Utopia</a>’s owners used their chartering experience on the yacht to great effect to increase the lounging facilities on the outside decks. On the sun deck forward, a large cut out was made in the canopy to create a huge sunbed with giant fluffy sofas in a champagne color. The windscreen was adapted to suit the new shape of the sunbathing area, new speakers were installed, and the lockers were adapted to create extra storage space. Meanwhile, a wide staircase was built aft of the sun deck to facilitate access from the Jacuzzi to the helicopter deck below. This magnificent piece is made of stainless steel and teak railings, with LED strip lighting. The entire helicopter deck was laid in teak in order to increase the relaxation space. A variety of furniture and storage was installed, including a free standing buffet on the starboard side to compensate visually for the crane installed on the port side. Large side cabinets with teak working tops and granite inlays enhance the entertainment options, and include a barbecue. Further forward, the seating area has been adapted with deeper and thicker cushions, with two-tread staircases added on both sides. Four large side-supported parasols provide the necessary shade or party atmosphere. The owners’ foredeck, just forward of their stateroom, already had its own Jacuzzi. Now the seating in this area has been replaced with three large sofas and sunpads, making it an even more idyllic spot for private relaxation. Deck space was increased by removing one of two large circular foredeck hatches. Finally, various minor alterations were made to the interior and, as Vergouwe stresses, the overall project demonstrates the added value Koninklijke De Vries Makkum offers. “Until we opened this facility, we often had to say no to loyal customers who wanted their Feadship refitted at its place of birth. The constant stream of new builds at the Koninkijke De Vries yard in Aalsmeer meant there was rarely space available to perform a refit in The Netherlands. Now we can provide the perfect blend of Feadship expertise in Makkum, more and more Feadships can be altered to match the changing requirements of owners and technological advances.” <div align="center">

Refitting Utopia in 80 days

Saturday 3 February saw the relaunch of Feadship’s <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/291">Utopia</a>. <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/291">Utopia</a> arrived in October 2006 at the Feadship XL facility in Makkum. Her new owner, who bought the yacht just before the summer, wanted to make some minor changes before the yacht went for her Carribean charter season. The refit included the addition of a new stairway from the sundeck to the bridge deck. De Vries Makkum: Utopia relaunched!

As some of you may know, this 235' yacht is for sale since the untimely passing of her owner, an experienced yachtsman. She is scheduled to be launched in January 2004 with delivery in March.
