The famous name on the yacht racing circuit, Kiboko, has taken a new shape this month with the completion of Southern Wind’s latest unit in its SW105 miniseries, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7245" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kiboko Tres34.59m (113'6&quot;)">Kiboko Tres</a>. The 32.2-metre carbon fibre sloop was launched in Cape Town harbour earlier this summer and is now undertaking a testing maiden voyage up the west coast of Africa to reach the Mediterranean as her first port of call.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/50899/image/large-83ceaa2c14f065114a3ca5a96a8a91bf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50899"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7245" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kiboko Tres34.59m (113'6&quot;)">Kiboko Tres</a> follows in the footsteps of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6864" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Satisfaction 34.59m (113'6&quot;)">Satisfaction</a>, Southern Wind’s first SW105 yacht which was completed last year, though <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7245" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kiboko Tres34.59m (113'6&quot;)">Kiboko</a> focusses more on performance compared to her older sister’s laid-back cruising setup. “I was looking for a high-performance yacht to race within the Superyacht regattas on the world circuit,”&nbsp;comments her owner, “at the same time looking for a place to spend precious time with my large family and completely disconnect from our daily commitments”.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/50896/image/large-f05cfdda5eb152d5795e5f9f78bbff7d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50896"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/50898/image/large-a7a81b481813eb6c610438759b11c9ce.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50898">The project brought together the South African shipyard’s skilled craftsmen and women, Farr Yacht Design who provided the naval architecture of the yacht, and Nauta Design who is behind <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7245" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kiboko Tres34.59m (113'6&quot;)">Kiboko’s</a> deck and interior design. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/50897/image/large-16ee9f8d9e328f6fcaf7a1f795c40fd1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50897"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/50895/image/large-075dab2f1d1c006cbb686bafaacfa98e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50895">The motto of the new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7245" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kiboko Tres34.59m (113'6&quot;)">Kiboko</a> is simplicity, and the owner challenged the yard to build a yacht that is advanced in design and construction, but minimalistic and reliable in its use. “The owner wanted to add some touches from the SW-RP 90&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6043" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Allsmoke27.5m (90'3&quot;)">All Smoke</a>&nbsp;and to capture the same sensation of lightness that we achieved on this yacht,” explains Massimo Gino from Nauta Design. “We lightened and simplified the interior furnishings and left the interior hull sides and bulkheads exposed for a result that is beautiful and innovative.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/50906/image/large-0cf612401d92f846dec96d019048d900.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50906">Thanks to the raised saloon configuration of this unit, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7245" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kiboko Tres34.59m (113'6&quot;)">Kiboko’s</a> interior is filled with light and is made even brighter through the beautiful Mallorcan-styled decor in the saloon. White-washed woods and light fabrics create a beach-house vibe that will perfectly suit <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7245" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kiboko Tres34.59m (113'6&quot;)">Kiboko’s</a> surroundings. “We have worked closely with Nauta and the owner’s wife to create an elegant and modern interior design that is physically and aesthetically light”, explains Nauta’s Marco Alberti, Southern Wind’s General Manager and Technical Director.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/50904/image/large-abcedd79905cee92dbb0c5b5f5568b72.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50904"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/50905/image/large-50e43d2506b507c41a31fa7a59d19815.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50905">Eight guests are accommodated for overnight in two twin cabins, a double VIP stateroom and the master suite that is placed forward. A crew of five will operate the vessel. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/50903/image/large-f271715713532bbff63898aabdf330e0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50903"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/50902/image/large-d0e2a580a186643ac4af296aba908411.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50902">On a more technical note, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7245" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kiboko Tres34.59m (113'6&quot;)">Kiboko</a> is ready for racing with a twin-rudder configuration, increased sail area compared to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6864" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Satisfaction 34.59m (113'6&quot;)">Satisfaction</a> and a fixed keel that provides extra righting moment without any compromise to the interior layout. “Starting with the configuration of the base SW105 with a telescopic keel,”&nbsp;explains Jim Schmicker, Vice President of Farr Yacht Design, “we added 2% more sail area and 3 tons of weight to the 4.5m fixed keel. &nbsp;This calculation of additional sail area and weight provides 3.5% more stability and a higher sail area/displacement ratio.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/50900/image/large-50aaa26c27b16431323a3284c99756cc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50900"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7245" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kiboko Tres34.59m (113'6&quot;)">Kiboko</a> is currently sailing towards Palma de Mallorca where she will be based. Southern Wind continues Kiboko era with delivery of third yacht for owner

Southern Wind Shipyard has recently announced the signing of a contract for a new 30-metre sailing superyacht. Commissioned by an experienced yachtsman, the 100’ high-performance cruiser was designed and developed by Nauta Design in collaboration with Reichel Pugh Yacht Design and is currently under construction at the yard’s facilities in South Africa. &nbsp; &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/44452/image/large-76630fd4d47a4dba14413b251febe666.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/44452"> Working closely with the owner on the design of the yacht since 2017, Mario Pedol of Nauta design explains a little behind the design philosophy of the RP-Nauta 100 project: “The owner is particularly keen on three aspects of the project. Functionality for safe and comfortable navigation, high performances to enjoy racing in the most renowned superyacht regattas, and sexy, appealing design to give the yacht a modern, aggressive and sporty look.” &nbsp; &nbsp;The full carbon racer-cruiser displaces 63 tons at full load and is being built with a lifting keel with a max draft of 6.1 metres. A sleek flush deck combines with a large sail area to complete the package. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/44451/image/large-2e61a9a3196e856c349dc0e3b7c3d034.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/44451">Southern Wind Shipyard’s new management and shareholders commented that the new project will benefit from the experience gained in the construction of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/48051" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="New SW105 superyacht delivered and named Satisfaction (2018-01-24 10:45:00 +0100)">SW105</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/48252" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Wind launches sailing superyacht Seatius (2018-03-15 12:30:00 +0100)">SW96</a>, and are looking forward to seeing this new project come to life. ”We are proud to be carrying on building reliable, comfortable and fast yachts and are happy to bring our renewed energy to the solid basis that Southern Wind is built on,” says Andrea Micheli, SWS Sales Director. The new management team at the yard joined Southern Wind earlier this summer following the sad passing of the yards’ founder and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/48511" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="In memoriam: Farewell to Willy Persico (2018-05-14 14:15:00 +0200)">CEO, Willy Persico</a>. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/37588/image/large-d89177ae598d344cd32eeda788263ca7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/37588">The superyacht is expected to hit the water in time for a Spring 2020 delivery. Southern Wind concludes: “An important addition to the yard’s current order book, this 30-metre high performance-oriented cruiser confirms Southern Wind Shipyard’s leading positioning in the construction of 90-120’ performance sailing yachts.” &nbsp;

New 30m custom superyacht under construction at Southern Wind 

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of Guglielmo ‘Willy’ Persico, the Italian entrepreneur and founder of Southern Wind, who passed away at his home in Genoa this weekend, aged 79.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/34740/image/large-32213634b4d13bf9e7baccd38215db1b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/34740">Persico was chairman of Cantieri Navali Rodriguez when he decided to build a sailing yacht for himself. He built the 72-foot Aga Jari, designed by Ron Holland, at the Cen Marine shipyard in Cape Town in South Africa. In 1991, he acquired the facility and founded Southern Wind.&nbsp;In the early days, the yard employed 30 people and produced just one model: a 72-footer designed by Bruce Farr. Today, it has some 300 employees and builds five performance cruiser models between 82 and 115 feet, in addition to custom projects. So far this year Southern Wind has launched two yachts: the first SW105 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6864" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Satisfaction 34.59m (113'6&quot;)">Satisfaction</a> and the SW96 Seatius, both designed by Farr Yacht Design and Nauta Design for the general concept. With over 40 yachts on the water, the brand celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2016.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/23402/image/large-b1e54c167645870d106b25d42dc7dc74.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/23402">From the beginning, Persico aimed to build semi-custom, composite sailing yachts based on the most advanced technologies combined with traditional boatbuilding skills. In 1998, the yard increased production from one to two units per year and introduced the SW95.&nbsp;Particular attention was paid to the carbon fibre/Kevlar lamination process and in 2006 it was among the first to adopt vacuum infusion. Investing in resources such as moulds, tools and procedures meant savings in time and cost and a superior final product in terms of quality, finish and weight.Throughout its history, Southern Wind has focussed on quality instead of quantity and the growth of the brand has been gradual with production limited to three units a year. “Ever since I started my career as a yacht builder, my philosophy has to been to proceed by taking small incremental steps, resisting compromises in terms of quality and avoiding unnecessary financial risks,” Persico said. In particular, it proved adept at building high-quality series yachts with ample opportunity for customisation demanded by discerning owners looking for a unique product.&nbsp;Real blue water cruising means long ocean passages and the ultimate test of every Southern Wind yacht comes with its maiden voyage sailing from the tip of South Africa to the Mediterranean – a distance of more than 5,000 nautical miles.&nbsp;Willy Persico was a highly respected and well-loved figure in the superyacht industry. He will be sorely missed and we wish Southern Wind all the best in his absence. &nbsp; &nbsp;

In memoriam: Farewell to Willy Persico

The 34.59-metre SW105 sailing yacht from the South African shipyard, Southern Wind, has been delivered, the yard has today announced. The first of its new miniseries of high-performance cruisers, she was commissioned by a performance-orientated owner and is now ready to sail on her maiden voyage from Cape Town to the Mediterranean. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/23406/image/large-515fd3592198605a41569529b2d7f825.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/23406"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/23404/image/large-40d45e706ac2196682e2344006c662c9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/23404">On board, she accommodates guests across an owner’s cabin forward layout, with three guests cabins amidships and crew accommodation for up to six found aft. Her sleek and spacious interior was the work of Nauta Design, who comment: “We succeeded in designing a single level deck while keeping the freeboard low; this without compromising the height of the interiors for the comfort of guests and crew and still leaving room for structures and running systems as we had planned from the start.” <img src="/uploads/store/photo/23414/image/large-eb2b1938089df49c837ad15aa6e15537.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/23414">“The aim when conceiving this project was to incorporate a modicum of race boat features into a cruiser/racer while keeping a beautiful aesthetic and a high level of comfort. This yacht stands out for the radical design of her lines and the advanced technology of her materials and systems” said Jim Schmicker, Vice President of Farr Yacht Design, and responsible for the naval architecture and general concept, the latter in collaboration with Nauta and Southern Wind. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/23408/image/large-c3f315971f698743055fa3e088620f9a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/23408"> Satisfaction&nbsp;also features a tender garage accommodating a 4.2-metre carbon jet tender as well as a 3-metre jet ski. Unusual for a boat of this size, Schmicker explains: “The wide aft sections and transom of the SW105 make for more internal volume and deck area; both a plus for a high performance cruising yacht. This generous width is carefully balanced with extra volume in the forward sections to ensure the yacht remains in control with a level for-and-aft trim when sailing at typical upwind heel angles.”Another two SW105 yachts are currently under construction at Southern Wind, scheduled for delivery in June and December 2018.&nbsp;

New SW105 superyacht delivered and named Satisfaction

The South African yacht builder Southern Wind Shipyard launched the first of its new miniseries of high-performance cruisers today: the 34.59m sailing yacht,&nbsp;Satisfaction.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/14660/image/large-7c180c749ebd0926037f646aff9c3b60.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/14660"> Four months after the delivery of SW96 Sorceress,&nbsp;SW105 Satisfaction&nbsp;was launched in Cape Town today. The 34.59-metre Satisfaction is a collaboration between Southern Wind with the Italian design company, Nauta Design and the US-based Farr Yacht Design.&nbsp;On board, Satisfaction features an owner’s cabin forward with three guest cabins amidships and crew quarters and galley aft. A crew of up to six is also accommodated for on board.
